i just had the biggest flashback with this video. when they were making the flat shell slabs, I thought, are they going to use them as tiles? but by the end of the video, when I saw the decorated boxes, I was immediately transported to my childhood. my grandmother had a large black closet, decorated similar to the box. as a kid, I had often wondered what does shinny stuff were. i sat still 30 second, just processing that those decorative i had gazed up on turned out to be shells. amazing video.

While stationed in Chuncheon-si ('87-'89), God blessed me with a "teacher" who patiently taught me joinery. I had done a bit of woodworking prior to that time, but that "apprenticeship" brought skills to a different level; it all started with learning how to properly sharpen chisels, then constructing small boxes, then on to larger things. He taught me some wonderful/graceful handwork, but more importantly how wood "works" and its possible potential. Nothing comes easy in S. Korea, most things required intensive "old fashion" hard work, but craftsmanship takes time (and patience), and I may never reach the level of my teacher. That tour of duty was supposed to be for one year. I extended it to 2.5 years, because of my teacher, and because of the wonderful hospitality of the Korean people; they were probably the best times of my military career.

나전칠기 농방에서 일하던 시절이 ... 떠오르네. 흠 저 분야는 모두 영세한 가내수공업 형태의 영세한 곳이라. 안전 작업 개념 따위는 없는 곳. 전통 나전칠기 가구들의 아름다움이 재평가되어 가격이 많이 오르고 해서 좀 더 시설투자되어 가격도 좀 더 오르고 세계에 수출도 되고 그런다면... 좋으련만...

In my culture the are called Paua (pronounced pawa) we use them in carvings our shells are alot deeper green purple blue and yellow looking colours kind of like a opal. I'm from nz for any reference. This process is so cool to watch ☺️

We have a large beautiful mother of pearl Korean China cabinet and I’ve always been in awe of the intricate details and craftsmanship. So fascinating to look at and I always think of how much skill n time it must have taken to create. I hope my kids never sell it after I’m gone because it’s apart of my heritage and connection to my deceased mother. I do appreciate the people who are continuing the legacy of making mother of pearl but I hope they protect them selves from the fine dust, heat and sharp blades etc.

Of course not. They don't care about the health of their workers. I was thinking the same thing when they were cutting the shell pieces without ppe. I always wear a respirator when cutting any kind of shell, especially abalone. That stuff is toxic to breathe.

Очень красиво. Еще у корейцев вышивка особенная. Тончайшими шелковыми нитями. И на вышивке видны мельчайшие стежки. Красота необыкеовенная. Из перламутра делают пейзажи. Слава Богу, что я видела такую красоту. И дай Бог, чтобы в красота в любом ее проявлении была доступна всем желающим.

Я вообще люблю перламутр. Раньше были пуговицы из Перламутра на одежде и на белье постельном. А тут такая красотище. Молодцы.
