New Sub! I'm in Quartzsite. So far I've managed to kill 3 plantings of dry beans, amaranth, Holy Basil, mini sweet peppers, and sweet pie pumpkins. 😞 Starting over, and I've got 2 store bought cherry tomatoes that are finally inching their way up. I've got 8 tomatoes growing from seed, the sweet potato slips are growing, Mesclun has popped up, and the bunching onions have taken off, so that's a win! I've got 2 honeydew melons to collect seeds from, so I'm planting some, and saving the rest. I'm also starting Swiss chard and spinach. I'm so glad I found you!

Look at you, growing so good!! Anything that died replant in the next month or so! My peppers always perform best in fall, I am so happy you are growing food!!

@@AllPurposeMom I have a very tiny space! My deck has been taken over, but that's a definite win, since there is no shade here. I'm planting part of the yard in grass seed this fall, because I have a few Muscovy ducks, and I'll be planting flowers everywhere now that I know what will grow here. Zinnias are my very favorite, so now I'll be looking for seeds!

@@AllPurposeMom I'll look for that video! I'm currently using cheap plastic planter, and have been collecting banana boxes to make a permanent lasagna bed. I think those canvas trunk organizers would work in the space I've got!

So happy to have found you, you’re so encouraging! Thank you for not being a gardening snob 😄 I wish we had a lush yard with beautiful shade like you do, but I still managed to grow a few things this year. Lots to learn, thanks for sharing your experiences.

Thank you for finding me 🤩 I am so excited for your garden no matter how big or small! When I first started my garden was quite small and shared a yard with a large pool, I miss the pool but I'm grateful for this space now.

My win- I was able to grow a basil plant from seed that I took from my other basil plant!!! I also finally was able to get bell peppers to grow on three plants!!! And figured out what the crazy lines on the leaf are - minor bugs - researched and now spraying neem oil - last year I lost all my watermelon due to this so I am hoping this will work!! I am in chandler ☺️

I take your advice.. but curious if you have any advice or if anyone else in Phoenix area has advice for folks who take off for the hot months? I'm waiting for hubby to retire.. could still be several years, but I'd sure like to escape for either a month in July.. or take several long weekends to the mountains.. (it all depends on money of course) but I've been thinking about a game plan if we decide to leave for a bit. Should I try to leave things in the watered raised gardens with shade cloth and ask house sitter to check? Like the tomatoes and peppers? I've harvested several batches of long beans.. but in heat they've stalled.. but I think I could leave them as long as they are watered. OR.. is it better to just accept a spring harvest garden.. and plant in fall or early spring and not worry about summer stuff. I love garden.. it brings me joy.. but I'm not sure what I should do if hubby retires.. stressing out is not my goal. I just transplanted some flowers I got at summerwinds this past week.. and my sunflowers are starting to get tall!! So agree the flowers help.

I would say its a couple of different game plans. When retirement comes and you are looking to take off in July, I think it would help at looking at June as the end of your spring/early summer garden. Maybe choose determinate tomatoes that will be finishing up by the end of June and shift the peppers into some type of timer or wicking system. Then maybe plant black eyed peas or pinto beans as a cover crop that you can get by on a house sitter or a sprinkler/soaker hose on a bib hose timer to water. This will protect the soil, add nitrogen, and give you a dried bean harvest when you get home. If you got a bib hose timer that could work for the long weekends as well. Some other simple ideas are oyas for long weekends. I believe you have mentioned using wicking buckets or systems, extra ways to wick on a long weekend would be good as well. Maybe even string wicking.
