British Railcards. Without wanting to show off, Germany has a much simpler system. DB (German railways) offers three cards, Bahncard 25 and 50, giving either 1/4, 1/2 or full reduction of standard Flexpreis and also always 1/4 on advance Sparpreis fares. A bit complexity comes from that some, but not all, regional transport authorities sometimes grant a bit of discount on bus and tram fares as well. There's also a Bahncard 100 (costing €4270 a year in second class) that gives unlimited travel on almost all of Germany's railways and also in many urban transport systems

One tip/trick with the friends and family railcard, is if you've got a child under 5 (ie doesn't need a ticket). Another trick for cheap tickets is split ticketing: it can be cheaper to buy tickets from A to B with an intermediate stop than a direct ticket. It's legit as long as the train calls at the intermediate station. (I've saved quite a bit using that trick to visit my family in Manchester.)

I think one trick which combined with a railcard could save more money is ticket splitting. Example my station to where I work, a offpeak return is £46.70 (with railcard it is £30.85). If I split my journey, the split offpeak return would cost £30.30 (with railcard it is exactly £20.00) So if you look at both methods, with my railcard and ticket split, I have pretty much got 58% saving compared to a normal offpeak return.
@SFSEfartman6 жыл бұрын
Also to whose who don't qualify for a railcard, ticket splitting can give you similar savings depending on the stations you use. Same with those who use season tickets, having a split season tickets can give you some more savings.

"A £12 minimum fare applies for journeys starting between 4.30am-10am Monday to Friday excluding Advance Fares. This minimum fare does not apply on Public Holidays or throughout July and August." (source: www.16-25railcard.co.uk/help/railcard-terms-conditions/ , point 7) I am a little surprised at being unable to use the ticket barriers before 1000 with your ticket - though it would not have been valid if you caught a train leaving before 1000.
@butteredtoast82926 жыл бұрын
the fare from LDS to HDY is a standard £2.70, so under the minimum fare David so it may not let them get through with it before 10 unless its over minimum fare?
@DavidWood26 жыл бұрын
I didn't know the fare, but knowing the geography I was aware it was a rather short journey and knew there was no way the 16-25 discounted fare being £12 or over. I was just surprised at the barrier programming apparently prohibiting entry with a discounted ticket before the moment the ticket was valid for travel, especially when this may well have the effect of preventing a passenger from catching a train they have a valid ticket for. Ultimately the passenger has the responsibility to be able to produce a valid ticket or pass at any time during their journey, supported by a railcard. At the very least, it would seem appropriate to allow 16-25 discounted tickets below the £12 minimum fare to operate the ticket barriers from 0945 or perhaps 0950 in order to allow people to be in place to catch the first train after 1000. If the passenger uses this small latitude to catch a train their ticket is not valid for, they are liable for the consequences of travel without a valid ticket. The potential for abuse of this relatively small adjustment in barrier timing seems small, especially if local students are aware that manual checks are made on trains they cannot use their 16-25 Railcards to travel on. Automatic barriers cannot guarantee any passenger holds the correct ticket and, where relevant, Railcard for their entire journey. A passenger could go to a ticket machine and buy a child fare ticket (50% of adult fare, so cheaper than a 16-25 discounted ticket which is 66% of adult fare) or a ticket for another railcard type that they do not hold (Disabled Person's perhaps being the favourite, as it is valid all the time). The child fare ticket might be picked up at the gateline if there is an obvious indicator to staff that a child fare ticket has been used as I would expect, but a Disabled Person's Railcard ticket probably would not be picked up unless there was a supplementary manual revenue protection check including inspection of Railcards. Of course, you must have the correct railcard for the ticket you are using - you should not buy a Disabled Person's Railcard ticket if you have a 16-25 Railcard, even if the fare is the same and you would be entitled to use your 16-25 Railcard for discounted travel at the same fare on the train in question. In practice, staff might let it slide as a honest purchasing mistake if the ticket would have been valid for your journey but for the selection of the wrong Railcard type, though you cannot rely on this. Finally, for amusement, I note that there are some local rules that can lead to very strange ticket combinations. www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk/transport/bus-pass/rail.aspx is one such exception - a local rail travel concession that allows a Central Bedfordshire concessionary travel pass holder to travel to London on Thameslink via a split ticket combination off peak - a child ticket supported by the concessionary travel pass to the last station where the train stops no further south than Elstree and Borehamwood (this may well be St Albans City if the passenger starts their journey from north of Luton unless they change trains), then onwards to London using an adult ticket, perhaps discounted by a Railcard.

The problem with advance booking is, you're committed to a specific time. Yes, that is the same "problem" that pretty much all air travel has, but at least with, say, a day return, your options are more flexible. Also, I discovered a problem when trying to use a network railcard on a ticket machine; even if you want to take a train that leaves during the valid period (e.g. after 10 AM), the machine won't let you - you have to get your ticket from an agent.

Ok I would save a little bit of money BUT I would be restricted to travelling on a certain train at a certain time...no problem if there are not disruptions or anything but should something go wrong I think there is not even the chance of a refund though I maybe wrong on that last point. With the 16-25 do you still have to buy train tickets or can you just get on with the railcard and that’s already “paid” for it

Lateral thinking; good dodge with the Gold Card. If there's something for The Highlands, you'd think there'd be something for Central Scotland. Everyone lives there from Perth to Ayr.

Tip 3: use rovers if you're travelling in largely the same area of the country

At the moment there is an added bonus with a Senior Railcard - GWR have an offer if you book before 17/04/18 and travel up until 23/05/18 there is a 50% discount rather than the normal 33% discount - there's always a catch though it's only on certain time trains but if your not bothered what time you travel it's worth having

I realise this is a late posting. And with the kindest of best support to the most kind and sensible Viki . This isn't at all personal. This is a fabulous vlog and very very very valuable..... However, I too have a question that I too am asked frequently. Many other KZbin pundits employ the phrase..."registered disabled"..as does Viki in this vlog. I ask...with whom is this "registration agency" that individuals should "register".?? To question this more simply and using Viki's words directly. .. Viki says " If you are registered as disabled ..." So I ask her or any You Tuber. .."What on earth is a registered disabled person?" It seems to me a rather austere concept and rather odd...even demeaning. Who is it who registers blind people or deaf individuals or autistic adults ... is there some sort of test involved...is there a passport or ID card that these individuals "must" carry to be identified? Are there multiple agencies? Whilst, to obtain various support funds there are hoops to jump through to qualify for these monies...but that is a social security matter and one doesn't get a registration card or identity ...just some money. Consider Diabetics...Diabetes is a chronic life limiting condition. Being Diabetic is considered as a disabled conditions...by say, GP'S and local councils... and the mighty HMRC! and the NHS ..one is entitled to free medication and vat free shoes etc! Diabetics for example can also obtain nice blue badges for their cars... Is that a registration act? But that's about er. ..parking?!... Not about personal registration is it? I know of taxi drivers to get issued blue parking badges in case they happen to drive a diabetic passenger, say.. Are these taxi drivers disabled? Let me repeat ...this is is a great vlog incidentally. Don't let my worries stop you doing these great vlogs I'm only slightly "triggered" as the modern idiom would express it, by this odd and to be honest rather humiliating phrase. (ie : Registered Disabled ) It is a knee jerk phrase used by loads of folk...not just by our kind Viki. So Please... I hope people can stop using this peculiar expression of human segregation. In the UK, registration doesn't exist. Who would pay to set up these agencies and who would benefit? ( OK the bureaucrats working in them would get paid ...true) Re Disability. One doesn't have to register to be be born blind...or autistic...or even require someone else to validate your identity.... it just happens...and those affected know their condition .. So...Thanks..but please . No more registered disabled references...there aren't any such people nor any such registration agency.. Just us ordinary folk living in a complex world....made easier by ... er umpteen rail card categories...lovely ...

One thing that's always confused me is getting the fact that I have a paper gold card ticket 'known' to my oyster card to be able to apply the discount for trips outside the zone my gold card already covers. I have asked at a couple of TfL places (back when they had ticket offices) and they didn't know / understand by question.

It seems people are "kneejerk commenting" without a) reading the PDF and b) not checking their facts before they look like a twit then everyone lambastes them in the replies to the comment! Measure twice, cut once people. It makes you stop looking like a dunce.

Wait so if it was costing £10.30 how much will the discount be for the 16-25

You may of said this in a video but what is your favourite station???

THANK YOU!!!! I'm originally Polish and I never understood the railcards. EDIT: So the conclusion is, in my opinion, that you have to travel VERY often for the railcards to be viable really. Either way I don't like the idea of paying for the card and only getting 1/3 of the ticket off. You have to pay twice for the tickets really.
@moramento226 жыл бұрын
Well I don't see a need for a Railcard of this type really. I would rather either buy a monthly or a yearly ticket, and then not pay again. It's kinda weird that pay 30 pounds and you have 1/3 off of the tickets, I would imagine 1/2 or 2/3 off would be more practical
@BronyumHexofloride6 жыл бұрын
Patryk Wieczorek, as long as a railcard saves you greater than the price of the railcard its worth it, if i go from London to Manchester the 1/3 off saves me about 1 1/2 the price of the railcard

Is it true you can use your family rail card to pick up your child at a station, then travel back with your child on the return journey, if that's so what would stop you saying I have dropped off my child so am on my way back now, but you never had a child with you on any of the journeys , this could be on different times or days..?

Is a rail card kind of like a "subscription" that gets you discounted rates on tickets?
@trueriver19505 жыл бұрын
Exactly. You pay up front for one year or three years, and get a 1/3rd discount. Only catch is you have to carry the railcard with you
@janeknight35973 жыл бұрын
And if you shop at Tesco use your point to buy the card.
