The duck origin kind of reminds me of an old comic from when I was young... similar origins, was a private detective or maybe just an office worker. Only duck that could speak if memory serves... Was seen in a cameo appearance in marvels guardians of the galaxy I believe. Can't for the life of me remember the characters name though...

A cloak of invisibility that only work when the person wearing it is asleep. Thought it was useless until one of the party member started using it as a blanket. I also had a bottomless bucket of holding, it hold an infinite amount of liquid but can never be empty and is never full. Party used it to kill slimes and tiny creature that would fit in the top. Final we had the sundial of slow time. A Sundial that could only work if the room was completely dark and could slow time down. Party never really found a use for that one and returned it to the merchant for a refund but where told that he didn't remember them and that his grandfather was the shop owner before him. Plot twist aside they found it slow time around them and the rest of the world continue as normal. a Rick van winkal if you will.

This... ...is the most beautiful thing I have ever heard. Oh, my home-brew items! Geoff's Clean Underwear: All filth on the wearer and their gear will evaporate into nothing in one round. Exceptionally heavily caked filth fades in 2 or 3 rounds. I gave this to a player once and he decided that he never had to remove his armor to go to the bathroom again. Still not sure if I'm proud of or disgusted at his character. The Medic's Mallet: This wooden mallet deals 1d4 damage per hit but heals 2d4+2 hit points. Anything that reduces the damage also reduces the healing by an equal amount. Best when given to gnomes. Door Shield: This large shield looks like a small door. When placed on a surface and knocked on 3 times, it may be opened from any of the 4 sides. Each side has a ring you grab to open it. Right ring: This may only be opened if placed on a wall or surface with a slope no less than 45 degrees. Creates a temporary horizontal tunnel up to 10 feet in length through any non-living material it has been placed against. The other side has an identical door shield on it. Removing one of the door shields makes the tunnel and the other door shield disappear. Left ring: Opens into a 3 foot by 2 foot by 2 foot extra dimensional space that acts as a storage closet. Bottom ring: This may only be opened if placed on a floor or surface with a slope no greater than 45 degrees. A tunnel similar to the right ring tunnel appears, but extends vertical rather than horizontal and has a sturdy wooden ladder affixed to one wall. Top ring: Creates a 10 foot tunnel similar to the right ring one, except that the other side leads to a wall on which bears a special image linked to the door shield. (Each shield bears its image on the back. It can be anything.) You may only have one wall bearing an active image at one time. Drawing or carving the image on another wall makes the previous one fade away. After using the top ring, any further attempts to use it will open to a brick wall until 7 days have passed. Bag of Screams: Screams ceaselessly when opened. Otherwise it's a normal bag.

Geese have tougher stats than goblins (in 2e I think), so clearly the two must be natural enemies. That's the logic that led the party in one of my dad's games to buy a flock of geese and watch them tear up some goblins at the entrance to that adventure's cave.

I imagine those invisibility bagpipes must be kitchen pipes. I am also imagining they have a greater cousin, the warpipes of invisibility (for casting group invisibility). For context, kitchen pipes are loud, but designed for indoor play, whereas warpipes are designed for communication over miles of terrain, across battlefields, were used for this role well into the 19th century (with the muskets, and the cannons, and the rifles), and were last used in battle in World War 2. Google Jack Churchill and Bill Millin. You will not be disappointed. And yes, they could hear them on the modern battlefield too. Sidenote: to my knowledge, there is one film featuring bagpipers in battle in WWII, "The Longest Day". Oddly enough, the only unrealistic point, at least according to Millin, is that you can't run and play bagpipes. Extra sidenote: any thunder-damage spell only alerts enemies out to 300 ft.

Had Ranger so skilled with thrown weapons he'd take the minor curse (-1 to hit or similar annoyances) to have weapons that couldn't be stolen, couldn't be lost, and he would never be rid of without a "remove curse" being cast... In a flask of everfill (whiskey)... I found a "whiskey weird" (think water elemental, only made of booze) who was extremely temperamental about who "partook" of her home... A "fool's gold coin of errands"... Basically a repeatable geas spell. It must be passed on to take effect, and can only be passed on once the geas is performed to completion or broken (with a 60% chance of breaking the enchantment all together)... A "can of whoop-ass"... invented directly in the heart of the Red Lodge of Chaos, and as disruptive as it sounds. Upon opening, it would release an air elemental to attack one person at random within eye-sight... Essentially we counted how many were present, and rolled a die to see who got their ass handed to them. Ugly Sticks... directly stolen from the Ugly Forrest... a royal grove of cursed trees that took points from Charisma as well as causing damage when struck with them. The effects weren't permanent, but took long terms to "heal" or "recover"... and could go into negatives, creating an image of a person so hideously deformed as to cause those within view of it to have to roll a save or attack it. ;o)

I once had a dm give us an astral diamond. We put it in somebody's backpack and hiked back to town, hoping to sell it. On the way, the guy carrying the diamond had to stop and poop. Every 15 minutes. Eventually we realized there was something going on, and cast detect magic on him. A magic aura was emanating from the diamond. One identify spell later and the astral diamond was revealed to be an "ass-trail diamond" giving diarrhea to the holder. We put it in the backpack of a player who couldn't make the session.

My best (or say most loved) homebrew item is the "Verbal Weapon". It is an awesome weapon that was really demanded by one of our players. I constantly called for wanting a Vorpal weapon. When he had the option to just ask for one, his exact words were used. So, the "Verbal Weapon" is an awesome cursed weapon that is a running gag in all of my campaigns since then. That weapon always has something to say. It's mostly comical but it is also the absolute bane of anyone trying to sneak around and ambush. It can also berzerkers and battle ragers to attack the weapon owner. It also really is a problem in role-playing situations. In my experience, it is an awesome cursed weapon for "murder hobo" RPG types. I am working on that. I am thinking that is the only time that cured weapon is awesome.

I’m home brewing a class that’s been tricky to scale properly because it doesn’t use spell slots like the traditional spell and half casters, has the constitution of a fighter, and almost the same speed as a monk. I remember after one session, I had to scale back the damage output because I did just as much damage as our paladin (she wasn’t happy about that) and had enough fuel in the tank to keep going. Not to mention, I had to remove my ability to crit. on a 19 after criting on the monster we were fighting and claiming the kill!

The army of ducks and hats would actually make for some interesting plot twists. The ducks were a former cult that got cursed when mis-performing a ritual. The Tome of the secret language of ducks could be a former clerics tome, but it is now the only connection these ducks have to the world. If the book is destroyed, the cult members stay as ducks permanently, and all stats change to that of a duck. To release the ducks from their curse, the ritual they tried to perform originally must be done correctly.

Chicken Noodle Soup: Me and a few friends were playing in a 5e one shot on new years. My friend was dming for the first time and we hadn't really planned anything and just decided to play something on the lines of a hack and slash. The setting was based of the league of legends setting of Runeterra. We started in Bilgewater. I was playing a Half Elf Sorcerer with three wisdom. Another friend was playing a dwarf fighter named Hargen Dargen Jargen Flargen and another was a drow Rogue who mastered sleight of hand. We began with news of a missing half orc man who his wife hadn't seen in days. We began to search his house and after rolling a natural 20 on investigation we found his body in a cupboard all sliced up. "It looks like chicken noodle soup in here" I exclaimes as the Rogue came over and simply told Hargen to not let the gnome see the horrifying sight. Hargen couldn't convince the lady and she walked over and began sobbing. My character in this situation said the worst thing possible, "We found him, too bad he is chicken noodle soup" she slapped me and told us all to leave. We were off to a great start. Later on in the campaign I got a necklace of fireballs and we were fighting a shadow dragon. My character with his low wisdom didn't realize his friend was in range of him chucking the entire necklace at the dragon but at the best moment a frog man named yoshi appeared and protected Hargen, dying in the process but the dragon did die. We eventually proceeded to god hood. Hargen becoming the God of Power or something like that, the Rogue becoming the god of thieves (of course) and my character becoming the sock god after being disintegrated.

Don't know if it counts as a homebrew item, but a magic carpet with the soul of a huskey dog inside it, we acquired that when our party members went to jail because we suspected someone was corrupt and we had enough evidence to convict, after that we got awarded magic items, we couldn't have them all but there was a ring and a magic carpet that had the soul of the previous owner and the soul of his dog

If you want something darker than DnD go with Chronicles of Darkness or World of Darkness. Edit:if you want pretend dark tabletop roleplay (like this seems to be) try "Changling the lost".

Homebrew items from my DM: "Book of detecting Lies", while reading it, any lie told around me will appear on the pages of the book. However, you will need to spend a spell-slot each day to activate it. Downside? I'm a warlock...
