This is a more than fair review. I got the 240w knowing that it may not be the most efficient charger for day-to-day use. But it's a perfect travel charger for my needs as I have a lot of devices that I need to charge including portable fans from the low power USB-A input. I have friends I usually travel with, and the outlets can run out quick. When you have a phone, a smartwatch, a battery bank, and a laptop, this thing comes in handy. I took it out for a trip this weekend and it makes it easier to manage with less overall chargers to carry.

The "restarts charging half way through" part on the new adapters is what grinds my gears. It happens with Apple Watch for example. Stops charging. Restarts charging. Repeat. Charging then takes twice as long. Also, I have a use-case not many people have. I use a USB charger as a power source for my CPAP (breathing) machine, since its power supply is just huge and heavy. It requires 24v, and I got a USB 20v PD trigger + 24v step-up connected to my breathing machine. If the USB power supply interrupts due to some nonsense, I don't stop breathing for a while. Not life threatening, but not good. I understand they don't advertise this as a medical device, I just don't get why the old adapter is capable of supporting it, yet the new one is not to save 10g. Also, Ankers' information regarding which devices support what is quite horrible. Still looking for a better 3 port, ideally all USB-C, 65-100w travel adapter (already carrying enough with my machine) that 100% supports my use-case. :-( And thanks a lot for your reviews, they are quite eye-opening.
@AllThingsOnePlace5 ай бұрын
Yeah, renegotiation was better on the previous year devices from Anker. Someone else had commented the 100W works with the magsafe charger now, so maybe something to do with a different charging control chip. Although I bet an apple charger works fine for both use cases.

Given the breadth of uses and electrical characteristics of USB-PD there’s not even really a “typical” use case for USB power anymore for such a general-purpose adapter to be designed for. The Universal in USB applies to the standard and definitely does not apply to almost any component. A more accurate adjective perhaps would have been “composable” or “modular” rather than “universal.”

The App for the 240W allows you to configure charging modes (smart dynamic allocation & a mode recommended for high power equipment. This may solve the wig problem you mentioned. It also allows firmware update, and scheduling of when the ports are on and off. It also graphs and lets you set display modes. For me the 240w is my new travel charger as I travel with a lot of demanding devices: DJI Air3 who’s battery hub charges at 100w, hand held video camera (35w), MacBook Pro (up to 140w), iPads (30w), iPhone/watch/headphones 3 way charger, Anker battery bank (140W) + my wife’s stuff. So more ports is always better, and more port faster is also often better since when shooting video and photos, timing is everything. The built in read out is really welcome in helping to figure out what is going on, and the surge protection is an extra layer of peace of mind given the cost of what is plugged in.
@AllThingsOnePlace5 ай бұрын
Thanks, yeah, I looked at the description for this one and the mode switching is not an advertised app feature. That is on the 250W charger though. I don't see any reason why this one wouldn't have it too though, so maybe a failure in the advertising, but then in that case the story changes to it doesn't work with the button, where the 250W has a button to do that mode change. In terms of scheduling, that could be useful and is pretty cool. Wow, that is a lot of devices, so having the extra ports makes sense. Several of those are low power devices too so the USB A ports are useful as well.

@petr-cze5 ай бұрын
Yea it's baffling, I just don't understand why companies feel the urge to use glossy plastic - it gets immediately dirty, if you try to clean it gets scratched (but usually it's already scratched from the factory) and on top of that it almost always makes the manufacturing process more complicated while not improving anything - these adapters would be much better without the cheap-looking glossy parts.

The 100W GaN portable is perfect for carrying around to fast charge your devices. I travel with two of them. Each adapter has 2 USBC ports. The power station I have mixed feelings about. First of all, their prices exceed $150 which means they are less economical than simply buying a $5 power strip and bringing individual charging bricks with you. For travelers you'll still need a travel adapter for most countries because the socket types are so different. Whilst in Bali recently, I went to a hardware store and bought a cheap TYPE F grounded power strip with 3 outlets which even had 2 USB ports and 1 USBC port. For devices you don't need to rapid charge (headphones, smartwatch, etc) that little strip was more than perfect. In Singapore, they used TYPE G, but the hotel room not only gave me multiple TYPE G sockets but a nifty usb port as well. The ANKER power station is cool, but the price is high and its adapter is bulky. When you have multiple high-load devices charging simultaneously, the Anker looses some steam.

Love your work. I'd be interested in a video covering what you imagine the ideal supply to be and what might stop an engineering firm making it (aside from price I guess). It feels like with every new release there's tradeoffs galore. I'm not an electrical engineer but I do work in electronics manufacturing and all the engineers around me work so hard to reduce tradeoffs. I just want someone to build a fantastic charger that will last a long time and I would pay 3-4x what these cost.

I generally stop the full power test around an hour. Depending on the environment, it may throttle to 65W power level after a long period of time. Thank you for this review. I am looking at the new anker 100w. I will use this for both laptop (14 inch mac pro) and phone while traveling and only for phone while in home. Is it right for this case? Is restarts frequent? Any safety issue for using with macs?

I think that use case will be fine. Apple products are pretty tolerant of the start and stop of charge when you plug or unplug the next device. I think it should be fine.

Does the anker 240W works internationally (110-240Volt)? The electrical rating only says 125V, but then there is a conflicting information saying the usb port support 110-240 Volt. Would be great if you can test it and share the results since a lot of people also asking about this on amazon (not just this device, but all anker device with ac outlets). Thanks!

Yeah, I've toned the language down a bit, trying to be 'nice'. The review style is often rushed, get through as much as possible in a short of a time as possible, which especially if you skip around, you will hear it's good, it's bad, it's good... But that is because of it's completeness, each product is often good at some things and bad at some things, and I mention both the good and the bad. I do often leave that final decision up to you. It is certainly niche content and it constantly evolves to try to be more complete overall but it can certainly be confusing so you are correct for sure.

A power strip and a good USB adapter separate. Anker certainly hasn't shown anything in this category. I have the new Baseus to check out but otherwise haven't really looked at enough of these. The UGREEN ones were checked but I don't remember those being great either.

You're only reviewer who tested the weight balance claim Anker made along with extensive other tests, made me immediately subscribe, also all the oscilloscopes made me feel nostalgic about my UG Electronics labs. I have Anker 737 120w adapter and I use an extension cord whenever I travel as doesn't sit at all in universal sockets in hotels. Curious have you tested how the new one handles the universal socket with all three ports being used?

thank you for your help and knowledge, it's greatly appreciated. I subscribed as I'm finding your channel extremely informative as I'm just starting to buy peripherals and need a good powerful desktop charger, that hopefully looks good, and we'll do the trick as it sits under my coffee table for now. I'm using the, new I guess, Ugreen 160 W Nexode Pro (paid $101 inc. 12% tax) for my iPhone 14/16 Pro Max's and future MacBook or iPad, but it's small and gets hot. I got it six weeks ago so I think it's too late to return, will use it for travel I guess unless you think it's adequate, I want something more permanent with more power, even though it would be overkill now, it won't be so much when I'm finished my set up, as I don't plan on replacing it anytime soon. Also curious on your advice of a power bank I just picked up, the latest UGREEN 200W 25,000 mHa model (paid $140 plus tax, reg $180). How do you think it stacks up compared to Anker's Prime 27,650 mHa version (currently 200+ tax on sale, reg. $250)? Or even UGREEN's 48,000 mHa badboy haha, although I won't be able to take that on flights. lol Yeah I know it's overkill, I can get it for 160 CAD inc. tax, less than all the others.

Hello, Which charger adapter would you recommend to recharge anker 548 power bank with maximum speed of 60 watts, and possibly charge a dell laptop usb c (not both at the same time) all in a safe manner?

I'd go for one of the 100 watt ones. The reasoning for that is you won't be maxing out the charger so therefore it will operate cooler and last longer.

So, I rarely say no, if it's the device that meets your needs then go for it. I obviously bias my expectations around better efficiency and power transfer in general. The primary job is a power supply. The "250W" power bank is not bad though, mine does have high self discharge issues. The power strip thing is jack of all trades master of none. It functions.

Looking to buy one to charge my phone, headlights, smartwatches, speakers and rarely a laptop. Do all these use 12 v? Do you think it's better to get the old one?
@adriftatlas4 ай бұрын
@@brumby8491Most native USB-C devices don't use 12V. They mostly use 9V, 15V, and 20V. One of the the few notable exceptions is DJI drone battery chargers, which will charge slow if 12V is not supported. As most devices don't use 12V, a lot of charger brands omit it. A lot of non-USB-C networking equipment uses 12V like routers, switches, and access points. One can use a USB-C to 5.5mm DC barrel 12V PDO trigger cable with them as long as the charger supports 12V and the powered device uses less than 3A (36W). If 12V is not needed for your use case, then buy the least expensive one.
