My plan for packing is what i did in the army. Have a packing list, but it's a fluid list that can be added to our taken from. Prevents me from overlooking simple things. If it is essential, have a back up. If i don't use it, figure out why and adapt. Winter vs summer is two different lists. For me it's not about having all the luxuries, but also not about suffering. Can't help you on route planning, i over do that and can't convince myself not to. Great list

Thanks and great tips! I have started to improve a bit on the route planning side and it's definitely been a worthwhile expenditure of time. Trips have gotten smoother and I've learned how to find better spots on the fly.

I over pack because I can. Silverado 2500HD Duramax, flatbed w/ RTT, awning, porta potty w/enclosure, two coolers, 10 gallons of extra diesel fuel, spare tire, hyd. jack, etc....... Better to have it and not need it. But I did forget my Milwaukee chainsaw in August when we went to the Bighorns. TIP : always take a shovel and a metal rake. The shovel is obvious but the rake is to reach the dead limbs that others couldnt quite reach for your campfire. (make sure the rake head is screwed on not just pressed on)

I def over pack.... But I always have the mentality of I would rather have it and not need it than to need it and not have it..

True. It's a tough thing to overcome sometimes, haha. But, not the worst mistake you can make, :D.
