You’re wrong, there’s nothing immature about Brandon’s mom not wanting to hug Mary, he was a jerk for putting both of them in that awkward situation just to make himself feel better and pretend everything is just fine. @@AlishaOutridge I just found out some interesting things about child custody laws in the Phillipines. First, unlike in America, the father and mother have equal right to seek child custody. However, the court will consider factors like the child's age, health, relationships with parents, and which parent can better provide emotionally and financially. I doubt Brandan would win a custody case against Mary with those conditions being considered. Also, even worse, divorce is illegal in The Phillipines! So if Brandan marries Mary, he will have a hard time breaking away from her, child or no child. I wonder if he even realizes how family law is in The Phillipines? This just makes me believe even more that Brandan is pretty much doomed to be in The Phillipines for the rest of his life, and Mary will be a part of his life forever.

I understand how that comes across as an off hand remark to a lot of western people, but in the Filipines (and many Asian countries) that is considered a huge compliment.

As a Filipino, it's disheartening when I see a biased viewpoint of the Philippines, especially from a TV network. The Philippines is a beautiful country and the remark Mary said about Brandon's mother, "Oh she's so white." is a compliment not a rude remark. Unfortunately, there's a lot of colorism in the Philippines, so being called "so white", is a compliment.

The white skin comment from both women was actually a subtle jab at one another. I love it. Here's why it is. Take it from a woman. 1. When Mary says it, she is showing insecurity and wanting Brandon to feel a sort of guilt from it. Like a sort of second hand embarrassment because he knows how hard it is there. In the Philippines and in most Asian countries, there is a belief that white skin means "you work indoors and live a much better life" where's tan/dark skin means you are poor, working outside in the rice fields. Businesspeople have white skin. Farmers have brown. So Mary is essentially saying "your mom's never had to work hard. Look at her, she's lazy. Just like you" and of course the insecurity "I bet she doesn't have to worry...It's not fair" 2. Now when the Mom does it, it's like a reverse attack on Mary and maybe a bit on Brandon which is awesome. That is likely the second reason why Mary glares at her. So what Mom is essentially saying subtly is "Mary you're poor and it shows. You will never hide it because. He however can hide it" I don't doubt that Brandon's mom did research on Filipino culture before visiting him UNLIKE BRANDON. She has to since she's preparing to go to war with Mary. His mom gives me the feel that she is one of those women that look up your weaknesses and use it against you. She is basically increasing Mary's insecurity. That's another reason why you see Mary's expression get a bit worse after the mom makes that comment. Women are very subtle with our attacks. We aim for the mind and soul, not the body.
