You can definitely connect a new router to your ISP modem box (which is often the same as the router). When you do, I would log into the ISP router and turn off the WiFi so that the only network you're broadcasting is the new WiFi router.

Not sure how it works in the US, but here in the UK where most people still have VDSL broadband via twisted pair copper, turning off your router regularly is not the best idea. It can result in DLM thinking there's a fault on your line that is causing loss of sync, which will probably lead it to throttle your max data rate in order to boost the noise margin. It will just keep doing this until the broadband becomes essentially unusable due to biblically slow speeds. Used to see it quite a lot with particularly thrifty customers when I worked as a faultsman.

Someone is blocking my wifi signal causing interruptions while I'm online. I unplugged my Amazon fire stick because someone was interrupting my shows. One night while watching a movie it kept going back to a specific spot in the movie. I had to turn it off. They must be using the SSID to do it. The same thing was happening at the school I worked at in Dallas. My computer would freeze and I would have to turn it off and back on again. Now someone is doing it at my apartment. It stops for a while after I change my password but after a week or so it will happen again. How do I prevent this. I've already had a tech come check things out but it is still happening. The tech told me not to disconnect it because it would not get security updates when turned off.

Possibly. You're going to have to use some kind of modem/router and the fact is that most of them are manufactured outside your current country (US? UK?). You can mitigate this kind of risk by running your own router into that ISP-provided modem and encrypting the data with a VPN before it hits that modem. Make sense?

I have BT Full fibre 100 with a smart hub 2. Apparently the router has very little functionality to allow me to tinker in my own network. Can't configure a subnet (guest network), manually assign 2.4 or 5 ghz bands etc. Anyone reccomended a good router that has great settings functionality to allow me control over my home network?

Have you seen the ones I recommend in the description of this video? I am really liking my Asus.

Lots of positive comments, all nice but I still don't know how to secure my router. All this vid does is tell you what, not how, to do. Bit like searching for "how do I get to Berlin in a train?" and the vid says "you get in a train to Berlin". Fantastic, how do I get to the station, which platform, time, change over. ie. Do I go to the control panel, device manager, is there a shortcut on the keyboard maybe, how do I get to the page that let's me change sht, do I need to restart the pc etc. Still, Nice looking vid though.

Thanks for the feedback. The reason I can't provide more detail is because every network router is different. I could show you how mine looks (and I have in other videos), but it would look different from yours, and then I would get tons of hate comments about "Hey...mine doesn't look like that!" 😂

My router came with what appears to be an auto generated strong password on a sticker. Is this safe to use?

It’s not bad, but if someone can easily walk in your house, take a picture of it and then use that to log into your network while sitting in their car on the street, I’d say go ahead and change it.

All my home network has been hacked. I am locked out from my computers, my e-mails and my social media. The administrator password is changed as well. Tried to reboot but it doesn't help. Finding alot about how to secure but what to do when it"s already done?

Even if your home network had been hacked, I don't believe the hacker would have been able to lock you out of all your computers and accounts. Sounds like it might have come from your computer. If I were you, I would connect with a professional in your area.

@@AllThingsSecured thank you for your reply. Well I know who the hacker is. Insanely enough he used to help me with my network set ups and everything around technological stuff. Needless to say I trusted him. He did have excess to everything around and about me. Unfortunately. But I think it is time I follow your advice and have a real professional check it up.

Great tips, but I dont believe there was alot of throught-process behind every tip. "Turn off your wifi if you're not home. There's no need..." for those who work remotely, wifi is a huge need and possibly your only means of monitoring your security cameras. You turn off your wifi and leave your physical home unsecured or turn on your wifi and risk being hacked. The tips should only revolve around how to SECURE your wifi.... Not turning it off as an easy solution.

Thanks for the feedback. If you listened carefully, I said to turn off WiFi when you're gone for extended periods of time (as in, during a vacation). And believe it or not, security systems existed before WiFi and there are other ways to secure your home.

turning off wifi while asbent is kind of hard to admit cause hackers can get to your network even if you are home...it is not like your presence at home is an obstacle!!
