The first song in "Fantasy on Four Alma Mahler Songs," for Voice/Orchestra by Bruce Turner. The song was originally written in 1910 for voice/piano by Alma Mahler--wife of Gustav Mahler, when Gustav was still alive. The original work has been elaborated significantly, new counterpoint added (I don't remember any counterpoint in the original music), transitions elongated, and chord vocabulary expanded. The voice should be a Mezzo-soprano with full register carry throughout. A contralto would be ideal, but is a rarity.
This is from a song set Gustav helped Alma publish through his publisher: Universal Editions in Vienna. Also during this time Gustav expressed his remorse at not encouraging (and early on forbidding) Alma to write much more music. And, actually became impressed with her abilities.
During 1910 the Mahlers would have been living in New York City, and Gustav would have been quite sick with Rheumatic Fever. In 1911 he died at his home in Vienna.
