Day 15 of our potato harvest is here, and we’re tackling a bit of everything today! We kick things off with some tractor maintenance to keep everything running smoothly in the field. After that, we head over to the cellar to check on how things are moving along with the potatoes already in storage.
Next, it’s time to finish chopping the last field of potato vines. I take you along as we wrap up the vine chopping before I head back to the harvester to keep the digging going. After running the harvester for a while, I head back to the cellar to help pick out dirt clods from the potatoes, making sure we keep everything clean and ready for storage.
It’s another busy day, balancing fieldwork and cellar operations, but we’re making great progress as we push toward the finish line. Come along for the ride on day 15 of potato harvest at Rocky Mountain Farmer!

I would like to give you a tip that my shop uses. Buy a case of brake clean from any auto parts store. When we take the oil plugs filter and drain plugs out we spray the surface and keep them clean so the matting surface has no leaks. For the cartridge fillers, we take the assembly over to the parts washer and clean all the old oil residue so we can inspect that plastic for cracks. we inspected the old oil ring for crack rips or tears. if any of these are there we check the matting surface to find out why. For the sensor you replaced, we would have sprayed that area so no dirt gets into the system.

The speed sensor works by measuring how fast the magnet glued to the PTO goes by. The usual culprit is a missing magnet. Good luck.
@RockyMountainFarmer

Changing that sensor actually worked so hopefully the magnet does not go missing

The external half of the sensor got ripped in half, maybe an old chain link caught it. Or maybe a skunk chewed it off. Either way it stinks. 😂

Fascinating and enjoyable. You said "Contract for 1200 acres" - not by tons of taters? What are you doing when you have a bad harvest? Refund your buyer or?🤔🤔🤔 ❤ from Denmark
@RockyMountainFarmer
@RockyMountainFarmer Сағат бұрын
Well when we have an acre contract, they just take what we grow. If we have a bad harvest that’s just what we got out of 1200 acres so we don’t have to refund anything they only pay us for what we deliver. I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos.

Another very informative and interesting video. I am going to go have french fries for lunch now. Odd thing I have seen for the past 12 months, and maybe you know why this is: a discount grocery store chain with that operates in 32 states with 900 stores sells Private Label frozen potato products that are imported from Egypt - how is it possible to grow potatoes, process and freeze potatoes and ship from Egypt to USA cost effectively ? Thank you for your great videos !

Has to be cheaper labor. Egypt is in a desert and taters take a lot of water.

I’m glad you enjoyed the video. I would guess the only way they would do that is if the government is subsidizing their crop to try and get more exports and they are probably also using very cheap labor if not child labor. We do not get any government subsidies like most of the world does.

Probably the processing being cheaper, Aditionaly it might be a variety of Potato that doesnt grow as well in America as in Egypt. Also Refrigerated ships might be cheaper to run from east to west across the atlantic ocean because thier main routes are going west to east, so they can offer better rates on the return leg wehre they usually would be running empty

Please explain more about pricing of the potatoes. Are big ones worth more than small ones? What is the price difference between your flake taters and the fresh potatoes? How is your contract price determined?
@RockyMountainFarmer
@RockyMountainFarmer Сағат бұрын
So with our contract, the big ones and small ones are priced the same they take everything and they don’t tear us very much. just for the dirt and rocks and rotten potatoes but with a fresh contract the contract price is usually higher but they usually tear you a lot because the potatoes have to be just about perfect. They also don’t want the little ones so you don’t get paid for little potatoes And our contracts are based on what the market price is.

Regarding your oil change... You put in 7 gallons, but didn't appear to check the level after starting the motor... Think you're probably a quart low, considering the oil filter was empty. Maybe I don't know something too, lol.
@RockyMountainFarmer
@RockyMountainFarmer 2 сағат бұрын
I did run it then check it. I just didn’t do it on camera. Also, the oil filters don’t drain the oil because of how their positioned but thanks for the concern.

If you sold to a frozen French fry factory would you get more income than the Pringle factory.
@RockyMountainFarmer
@RockyMountainFarmer Сағат бұрын
Not necessarily, the contracts would probably be about the same, but they would probably tear us higher because they have to be better quality
