Tragic but predictable- this is what happens when our PM brags about us being a post-national state, and continually denigrates our fathers of confederation as bigots. As for doctors, we’ve never had a shortage- we just have a lot Canadians graduating with a ton of med school debt, and not being willing to work 6 days a week in exchange for exorbitant taxes. Travel to any border town in the US and you’ll find that all the doctors there are Canadian. We’d be able to keep our doctors if we stopped taxing them to the hilt.

'Little Québec' as you so disparagingly call it was built in the early 1600s. French Europeens arrived in the 1500s even. They built what would become Canada for over 100 years before the Brits even knew where 'La Nouvelle France' was.
@EmotionallyExhausted13 сағат бұрын
We're dealing with the sudden realization of a harsh truth-if a country cannot defend its own borders, it's not sovereign. Canada is the _illusion_ of a sovereign nation. We have _always_ existed at the discretion of the United States, because of our strategic location and natural resources-all of which are of extreme importance to them. It was only a matter of time before they sent us a bill, and here it comes. As an Albertan, I truly don't understand anyone who would prefer the _guarantee_ of being exploited by Ottawa, as opposed to the _chance_ of something better with Washington. Regardless, the new reality may have very little to do with "accepting" citizenship, so much as _living_ with it.
@kyledabearsfan12 сағат бұрын
Honestly, as an American from the Midwest, ive been watching Canadas political situation with a ton of intrigue. Im very impressed by Albertas choice in leader, and I think a lot of you would fit in very well in the Midwest US. At a minimum, I hope we can work closer with Alberta, but the rest of the provinces with the exception of maybe Saskatchewan seems lost atm.
@EmotionallyExhausted10 сағат бұрын
@@kyledabearsfan I understand the hesitancy to want nothing to do with _most_ of Canada. And, if you look at Canada as one _thing_ , with one dominant political climate, that fear is well-grounded. No one wants another California. But this is a massive country (Ontario is larger than Texas), with multiple regions and cultures that have divergent and conflicting values and interests. Regions that often have little in common, other than loathing each other. It's far too big to be one _country_ , let alone one state. That's why it has never worked. Federalism in Canada has always been a fragile, artificial thing because all of our natural ties are north-south, not east-west. If you offer Alberta, alone, full statehood (our constitution has a process to legally grant provinces secession), you accomplish many things. Most of the few leftists we have here would flee to the rest of Canada. You also _attract_ a vast number of the conservatives from outside Alberta to move here. You'd, essentially, create a super-majority conservative state. Ignore the rest of Canada and wait. Without Alberta to fund the infrastructure of Canada, it would fall apart, and fall apart rapidly. They'd accept any terms you offer. You could carve them up into smaller states with less political influence, or just grant the whole big thing territorial status. I think some sort of relationship is inevitable, but you do _not_ want to absorb everything as one massive state.

Sadly, there is a lot of truth to your statement. If Canada, cannot defend itself, then it may be taken over. Even Hitler thought that German-majority Switzerland would want to be part of Germany. Because Switzerland is neutral and doesn’t do sanctions, they actually traded with the Nazis during WW2. However, even that wasn’t enough. The Nazis actually had a plan to take Switzerland. They only gave up the idea when it was obvious the Swiss would not go down without a fight!

If Canada was broken up into several states more people would be inclined towards the idea and it would be more beneficial. There would also be significantly less changes. @@Electro520 Alberta wouldn't need to be sold, we have such a low population and a rich resource base plus the expertise in clean oil and gas production that we would be invited to sit at the table. In fact Trump's 51st state comment combined with how well received Danielle Smith was in DC, even getting an invite to the Inauguration tells me that Trump and his administration already have Alberta on their radar as a potential recruit. Considering how much the Laurentian elite HATES Alberta and Albertans it would be a fairly easy decision to leave Confederation behind rather than being further enslaved by Ottawa's policies.

Sure we arent perfect. But there is a major gap between whats going on in Canada and whats going on here in the US. We were on the path you are on, but not as far gone. We pivoted because we saw the direction Canada and Western Europe were in. We have hope again.
@EmotionallyExhausted10 сағат бұрын
No place is perfect. The difference is, you can move to a particular region that is closer to your views in the U.S. and help to fortify it, because the individual states have so much power. Alberta votes almost entirely Conservative in both federal and provincial elections, and it means _nothing_ . Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver dictate every aspect of our lives, and always will under this system. No Canadian politician is coming to save us, not even Poilievre. He might make things better for a few years, but then what? The Conservatives will only maintain power until the voters in eastern Canada get bored with prosperity and stability, forget how truly despicable the Liberals are, and long for the days of the over-reaching nanny state. Do you know what the worst government in Canadian history is? The _next_ Liberal government. Always.

Kind of obvious. I blame the dumbing down and counter-national education reforms initiated in Ontario by the Harris Conservatives in late 1990s. Also, today, most high achievers with higher education come from immigrant families. They did not grow up in a social and cultural environment loyal to Canada. For both groups dominant priority seems to be consumerism and collecting material values. Let them go...

This is 100% lies. You didn’t poll all Canadian men you have no way of knowing how many would accept it.

What's that expression? "In a heartbeat." By the way I'm 41 and a father, but I want my kids to have opportunities to be something other than a ward of the state on UBI. I don't want them to be physically alive if their souls are dead.
