Several railfans are gathered in La Plata, MO to catch the return of the Talgo set. It's almost blocked by a westbound manifest, however the rail Gods smiled upon them and delivered. Looks like the train was loaded too!

Is there an app or website where you can track trains in realtime / GPS?
@specialed63575 жыл бұрын
I too wondered and recently looked into it. Yes there are websites, but from what I've seen, only outside of the U.S. or rarely in the U.S. (or they are just schedules) at certain locations and for passenger trains only. I mostly just wanted to know if there was a daily approximate time schedule, even if I had to keep a log and see if there was a pattern at all. For me I live by CN tracks and was only able to find a schedule of when the local train crews went on duty, from where, and their destinations. So that helped a little to provide a window time frame for local trains cause you have to factor in delays, travel time, other train traffic volume, track maintenance, etc... But that did not help at all for when the big trains come through. But then I kinda discovered an answer I was looking for and apparently what rail fans were using. There is a system called ATCS where by using a computer program and a software defined radio (like a police scanner but connected into your computer) you can decode the local radio signals to see the track rail light settings for sections of track (the ones trains obey whether to stop, slow down, or continue moving) and then you can, I'm assuming tell where trains are near you and their direction. I have not been able to find anything yet if people share their ATCS info online, so if you are looking for info other than nearby you, (depending on your radio, antenna setup, location, etc...) you may only get info from a few miles away. There is information online including how to set it up, where to download the free software, etc... I'm a radio and scanner hobbyist and was planning on getting a S.D.R. radio anyways.
