First off they were teenagers, not experienced gunmen, the guy was likely twice their age. That’s a lot of advantage right there. Secondly I’m a veteran so I was trained, but I also grew up practicing martial arts and learning marksmanship. I was taught at a young age that when you hand the responsibility of defending your life completely to someone else, there’s an implication that follows. That complacency is what gets people killed.

Never pay a ransom. It rewards bad behavior, and escalates future abductions. If pirates learn they can gain a half a million dollars for kidnapping people, they'll do it a lot more. Even if they are committing crimes only for survival, paying hostage ransoms teaches others that they can go from starvation to riches in a life of crime.
