Bang doesn’t rhyme with Banger. And even if you call a gun a banger then banger doesn’t count as a rhyme because it’s the same word. Therefore it aint Cockney Rhyming Slang.

@@samhill5332the point of Cockney rhyming slang was to say a word that rhymes with the wrong word in the saying, meaning that if you want to speak in code in east London to I don’t know talk about certain things without the police or informants understanding. So the point is for the meaning of the slang term is actually the other part of the phrase it rhymes with and the only other people who would know those phrases are other non informants who speak the local vernacular. This has been developed over centuries until media broadcast it to the public. But a lot of older Londoners still speak it. It’s what makes them great rappers because rap is based off a similar concept but is younger so it’s literally their language. Specifically these two because I believe they have a real criminal and music background.

For example I’m heading up the “apples”, I’m heading up the “apples and pears” something market sellers would call out in London in some of the poorer communities often when selling fruit. I’m heading up the stairs. Stairs rhymes with apples and pears so “apples” means stairs. Hence why Americans miss the full depth of the bars Pete and bas are giving.

Cockney rhyming slang is crazy. The first example I saw was phone rhyming with “dog and bone” so you call the phone the word that doesn’t rhyme… so phone is called the dog. So the classic dish “bangers and mash” with a gun being something that bangs means you call it a mash (instead of a banger). You could make up your own to. Like, “beans and rice”, so if it’s nice then you say it’s beans. Or “pots and pans” so if you shot at someone you “took a pan”
