I forgot to mention/include a few things. My mistake. And I will try to fix it with this comment (read below): Tyranids are also really good in the psychic phase and also a good shooting army as well. Admech, and Sisters of Battle also do not have a psychic phase. When it comes to horde/elite armies, I didn't include anything because a lot of horde armies can be played as elite and vice versa. Take guard for example, you can have a horde with a ton of infantry, or you can make an elite list with 3 baneblades and some troops. Same with Orks, you can have tons of infantry or a few mech things. This is why I chose not to include it - sure some armies are stuck being elite but I felt that was pretty self explanatory. If you guys point out anything else I happened to miss I will post them in this pinned comment.

Almost Pro Gaming Would necrons not count as a durable army?
@AlmostProGaming
@AlmostProGaming 6 жыл бұрын
Liam Norconk Yes and no. If you can't manage to kill a full squad of Warriors then yes they are durable in a sense because dead models might come back to life. But killing the warriors themselves isn't that hard to do for a lot of armies. And if you kill the whole squad they don't come back at all, and for most armies it's not that hard to kill at least 1 squad a turn. Necrons are supposed to be durable but with the current ruleset they fall short.

That led me into Grey Knights and Officio Assassinorum for psyker support. Eventually I also got into Astra Militarum for the awesomeness of Steel Legion plus the jet bike support of Adeptus Custodes. Got into Death Guard and Thousand Sons as complements for each other after reading the Horus Heresy novels and then talked myself into Tau since I love Gundam style robots and battlesuits. This is on top of the Genestealer Cults and Chaos Cultists/Spawn I got into for Necromunda. I am trying SO hard to not get into Orks when the new boxset and codex comes out, but it is going to be really hard.

4th thing to consider when picking your first army. Price. This requires you to do a bit of research on what units in the army your potential army you are most interested in using on the table. But some armies can have a well balanced force built from cheaper box sets such as the starter kits, while other units can be quite expensive, especially when buying more then one of a specialized unit. One example of this was when a few friends and I started playing. I chose the Tau, and was able to build a decent force out of two of the starter boxes along with a Commander and a pathfinder team. My friend who chose Tyranids knew that he did not want anything in the starter box for those, and has spent much more then i have collecting the troops he needed to match me points-wise. My other friend became very interested in Drukari and bought the starter box mostly on lore and looks. Unfortunately he found in our first few low point games that his units were not stacking up against ours. He then researched the cost to buy the units that he actually wanted to play with, and found that he would be spending hundreds more on the models then he had anticipated. He hasn’t bought another model yet.

Overall Favorites: Grey Knights, Salamanders, Astra Militarum. By morality: "Good Guys" Grey Knights, Blood Angels, Salamanders, Space Wolves, Ultramarines, Adeptus Mechanicus Skitarii, Adeptus Sororitas (hey, why not?) "Bad Guys" Tyrannids, Khorne's Chaos Daemons, Smelt Rats, (40k Equivalent to Skaven) Orks. Others: The Tau, Scalies, Ogryn, Abhuman, Slann, the Old Ones, Drukhari, Beastmen, Legion of the Damned. Blood Angels: Cover pretty much everything I like - Looks, Lore, Strengths, Allies, Playstyle, etc... and they come in Blood Red. An overall favorite to be sure. The red pallet reminds me of Epyion Gundam. A personal favorite. But the lore of the Salamanders, Are also appealing. They specialize in Flamers, Meltas, and pretty much anything that goes "boosh." Color pallat's not bad either. Their Lore, Homeworld, aesthetics, etc, All speak to me. Space Marines that pattern themselves after Dragons? I'm down with that. Deathwing; The color pallets. Just. Look. Awesome. As are the Knights & Grey Knights, appearance wise. And the Black Crusaders. The Ultramarines remind me of Space Marine for Xbox 360 - Good game. Captain Titus is quite likeable. The Astra Milatarum remind me of the Colonial Marines in Aliens. Space Wolves are just... aesthetically.... bad ass. And their lore - much the same. But the Tyranids are a perfectly "villainous race" - very Zerg like, and downright intimidating. Definitely a Favorite "evil race." The Tau are very Robotech like. Ogryn have really big guns. Orks are comically ridiculous. Though Khorne's Armies remind me of DOOM, D&D, and Diablo. Decisions... decisions... Good advice, and video. Gives one alot to consider and think about. This kind of logic applies to pretty much any hobbie. The kind of army I'd like to start with; Something "all 'round" in play style. Maybe I'd start with Astra Militarum and augment them with Allies like Space Marines, Mechanicus, etc, for a mixed set. I like the idea of a balanced, all 'rounder, and highly modular Army. And the Guard has no shortage of aesthetics and lore.

I’ve found that the best synergy of “army bashing” is having chaos space marines with imperial guards. I currently play both Death Guard and Astra Militarum, and anytime I think my sickbois might need some covering fire or a disposable ranged unit because I want to keep my poxwalkers, I just use guardsmen and say they’re traitors/cultists and no one bats an eye. If you want to mix armies make sure they somewhat make sense lorewise (CSM/IG, IG/Nids or GSC, SM/IG, Etc)

The point about picking an army that has a lot of allies and options if you get bored easily. That is totally me. In MtG I am constantly building new decks and swapping out this or that if I get bored, so that piece of advice is really valuable to someone like me. Not to mention me getting into this after reading a few Space Marine novel series, I'm happy that the Imperium fits that aspect because I really like a few chapters of the Space Marines/Chaos Space Marines (Sons of Horus ftw). So it's nice to know that little tip, thanks again! Great video!

What a decent video for new players man! Very helpful imo. Thank you for your time and effort, B! I know that I am not a newb, but the following opinion/process might also help someone who is on the fence over what force to invest in. I just recently had to reboot my 40k collection. My new army needed to be a wise choice so that I could avoid buying models that I will end up never using. Unless someone is just utterly dedicated to only playing out of one codex, I like to consider battle-forged armies consisting of detachments from different codexes as a single, playable force for the purposes of starting a new army. I.e. battle brother forces who share the aeldari, chaos, imperial, or tyranid keyword. As a vet. 40k player, no matter how much I like an army's lore or models, I will no longer buy into a force whose time in the spotlight over the years as a competitive army has always been brief. That leaves three major viable "forces" to choose from: chaos, imperial, or aeldari. I say this because these three factions always feature prominently in GW's marketing, so it isn't likely that they will ever let them just start to suck hard. This reasoning, plus the vast array of options available to each of these "top" three forces also makes it very unlikely that a meta shift will ever render the whole force uncompetetive. Would you believe that we have only one dedicated Drukhari player in my local meta, and no other aeldari armies?! Lots of everything else, especially chaos armies. I was originally going to go with chaos over imperial because of my newfound hatred for space marine novels. I read 6 of them before I realized that they were all basically just the same book. But hooooow is no one playing aeldari? They are so good! So I am now the only craftworld player at my shop, and the only consistent player in the city.

There is a point at which everything converges. For example, Death Guard were not my first choice, but they hit all the marks. Their lore wasn't my favorite, and didn't have a good aesthetic for me until I saw the bare plastic and did some digging around their lore. The biggest upshot were that they don't have many models to collect or paint in order to even start, and not many people were playing them which made the Dark Imperium sprues readily available. So, right there was both a low cost of entry, and something different with an incredible raw aesthetic potential. Don't even get me started on just how much damage they can take, nor the many, many ways they are expandable, hahaha!!!

Pick the Chaos Space Beastmen and never look back Yes we have very few units. But we have everything that matters. Spam Chaos Beastmen as your troop choice. Use Tzeengors on flying disks as your fast attack. Pestigors for your tanky option. Khorngors for your elite anti-infantry choice. And my personal favorites Slangors as your big boys. Your opponent will surrender before the might of the beasts, knowing you are the Superior man. Alternatively, convert a entire army of CSM into Beastmen. If you want that competitive edge.

Here's a tip: If you get bored of similar models, then by all means go Aeldari/Imperium/Chaos. Tons of unique choices. However, if you get bored of similar playstyles, I would suggest Imperium or Chaos, not Aeldari. This is because while each Aeldari subfaction has its own strengths (Craftworlds psychic, Drukhari melee etc.), they all revolve around the same main style of play, which is speedy plays. Aside from the Wraithknight (which is just a crap knight that's probably a bitch to carry) there are no really tough Aeldari units. With Imperium, however, you can play speedy with White Scars, be hard to kill with Grey Knights or Custodes, or be somewhere in the middle with somethinf like Ultramarines. Just a thought to consider, y'all.

Having a tough time. I like playing as a Caster in most video games, and shooting. I am okay with the aesthetic of Eldar, but the sheer versatility of Astra Militarum and Imperium units attracts me more. It mainly comes down to having read Imperial lore over the years till now. I don't know too much about Eldar to really dive into it and consider them, so if anyone could fill me in a bit that would help.

Go with imperial guard and include some inquisitors or grey knights/dark angels/space wolves then which can do the psychic stuff. Eldar have much better psychic stuff but if you love the lore of the imperium then Guard/imperium allies is probably your best bet.

This is how ORKS get DAKKA done right. They can out shoot any army with their sheer numbers. Also, there are rules for a looted kart. So, I am buying a miniature shopping kart that is just the right size to make a looted shopping kart.

another thing i would add to play style is how specialised your units are. so if your units are very specialised they will be more expensive so you have fewer models however they will be more skilled at their specialisation. so eldar are the most specialised, then human, then ork to give you an idea of the spectrum. so it's down to if you like having a few highly skilled units or just want to charge with a wall of meat. for me 25 years ago when i chose eldar this was the main factor and i custom designed and built a 3000 point eldar army that was tailored just to killing space marines. unfortunately i only got to try it out twice the first time was against a space wolf army, but unfortunately we ran out of time so had to call it a draw, i did however discover in that that striking scorpions were a complete waste of time and ditched them from the lineup as howling banshees were faster and better at close combat especially as they got a free first hit in. the second game was against chaos marines and i wiped them all out without taking a single casualty. there was 1 thing that wasn't in the rules which we agreed to for that game and that was we could take 1 piece of wargear and give it to a unit (cost didn't matter, nor did rules about a unit being allowed that item, so was literally any piece of wargear regardless of rules to any unit regardless of rules) so the fact that my avatar had a warp jump and the first thing he did was warp straight into the chaos marine's deployment zone may have given me an advantage that i shouldn't have got. fyi if anyone's interested i will put the army build as best as i can remember here (some of these units may not exist and there may be better alternatives now): scouts (with krak grenades, was a large squad probably 10 in total), dark reapers with phoenix lord, howling banshees with phoenix lord, warp spiders (don't think phoenix lord was out so they had the normal squad leader thing), dreadnaught with d cannon and scatter lazer (no close combat arms as was to stay at back of battlefield for support), wrath guards (just had mini d cannons at the time), there was probably a farseer or warlock or possibly both but i don't remember. the scouts were deployed in cover mostly on roofs of buildings and rained krak grenades down on all enemy, the warp spiders charged 1 flank while the howling banshees charged the other, the avatar (due to the extra rule) was teleported into the enemy deployment zone, the dark reapers obviously gave support too, the wrath guard remained hidden in my deployment zone and popped out and destroyed any units that approached (so basically covered the support units). this lead to a flawless victory and my friend refusing to believe i hadn't cheated outside of the exception that we had included. FYI his wargear went to a bike marine and was a warp grenade (his plan was to suck the avatar into the warp with it, which would have been a great strategy except when he threw it the avatar was in combat with abbadon and the throw wasn't the greatest ever so his counter plan to take out my avatar resulted in his commander being sucked into the warp while the avatar was deprived from a kill :(

Honestly, the fact u mentioned allies made me rethink my choice. In my opinion allying in warhammer is pretty good to hold (edit) "Aeldari" caught my eyes, ur opinion? so I like their aesthetics, I also like the shooting fact (less melee close contact), allies, don't know their story in particular (will look into it) but do you think Aeldari seem a reasonable option?

I just think its funny the first time I played I ran Tau on a 5 man free for all against people who hardly acknowledged my existence and on the first turn I wiped out 3 players, 2 of them weren't even in range... But the downed ship one of them was using as a base, you know, the one with the active power reactor? yeah, that one. it sure made a big boom... I was up on a cliff so that saved me from the blast. I could have blasted the ship till it went boom, but that would have taken 2 turns, so instead I blasted 3 tanks. 2 of them were surrounded by his soldiers... let me rephrase that... his soldiers were in range of his exploding tanks. The last tank was guarding his general and comedically placed between 2 explosive canisters. With all these explosions going on inside a downed ship with an active power reactor, the explosion from that ship + his tanks + all the explosive canisters + my rail-gun blasts made it so the explosion was so massive and powerful that it was over 10 times as powerful as the most powerful weapon in the game!!! The only reason why the last player survived was because his army was on the opposite side of the table and had a mountain of preexisting city rubble in the way of the blast.

If you plan on attending big ITC events I wouldn't do that. They recently updated their painting restrictions so that your space marines all have to be similar and can't be completely different paint schemes. So instead what I would recommend is to just pink an unused paint scheme you like and paint everything that paint scheme and use them as a successor chapter, and for your lore just say its a mystery who they are a successor of so you can change which rules you want to play.
