The Alocasia Frydek is a jewel alocasia coming from the Philippines. It is considered a popular houseplant but is not for beginners at all, due to its complicated care and pests. In this episode I share the care tips, and show you how I propagate it, with updates in the end as usual.

I have my Frydek growing in leca along with my alocasia cucullata one too. The cucullata is growing like steroids in my leca. I converted the Frydek plant 3 weeks ago when I purchased it from Home Depot. It's doing good in leca. It already gave me a new leaf and I see another one growing.

Hello from Philippines. The little 'bulbs' that grow from the mother plants that you called 'corms' are actually called 'bulbils'. I think corms/bulbs are terms used for caladiums/colocasia. While rhizome and bulbils are used for alocasia. In addition, the right scientific name for this plant is Alocasia mitcholitziana 'maxkowskii' and has a common name of Alocasia green velvet. Alocasia frydek however is the right name if A. mitcholitziana is a variegated one. Hope you learn from this!
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 2 жыл бұрын
Interestinggg, you are the second one to share that Frydek refers to the variegated only. Its such a misnomer because even Summer Rayne Oakes growers call the green varieties Frydek as well.

@@onlyplants yes, they always mistakenly labeled this plant as A. frydek, that's why we, Filipinos Alocasia enthusiasts are teaching other plant collectors to use the right name/term for the species.

Spider mites on these can be eliminated by monthly rinsing the leaves with very warm water, especially the undersides. No poisons needed. If it's already heavily infested, rinse at every watering for a little while to get them under control first.

Omg yessssss the frydek is one of my absolute favorite plants. I have one but I’m thinking about buying another 😁. I wish I could afford the variegated one but at $500 usd and up its too rich for me. The die back is usually due to overwintering. Mine seemed to do very well this winter. I kept it right by a humidifier. So far I have not gotten spider mites on any of my Alocasia. I wonder why they are such magnets to spider mites?

How do you recommend cleaning these plants to help get rid of/ clean off the mites? Thanks!
@onlyplants
@onlyplants Жыл бұрын
Jet stream of water can knock off most of these. Soapy water will do some serious damage to the mites. But some pesticide or neem oil added to the soapy water is most surefire way of ridding them. Repeat one more time in 1 week time to break the life cycle of the mites. As new eggs could have hatched in 1 week

Hi 👋. “Apply some pesticide on them …” - in your case you put some eg furadan / kenfuran inside the soil mix every 3 months to prevent spidermites ? Or mix with water to spray ? Spraying seems impossible when have many plants and leaves all facing front with spidermites hiding on the back of leaves 😅. Hope you can share some tips
@onlyplants
@onlyplants Жыл бұрын
Furadan on top of the soil please. They are not meant to be mixed and sprayed. Should you choose the spray method curacron would be a better match.
@onlyplants
@onlyplants Жыл бұрын
You can also water the soil with neem oil solution. The roots take up the essential oils and to the leaves. Be sure to emulsify neem oil water with a few drops of soaps. You can also spray neem oil on the leaves.

That depends on your environment, and your soil make-up. They want a bit of drying out period but not for long. If your soil is more compacted and dries up slowly, consider watering small amounts (sprays) or less frequently

I had to give up on allocasia, a little bit too much water the leaves turn brown and die, a little underwatered leaves turn brown and die. I've never had another plant that was as picky about needing an exact amount of water.

Haha the key is the potting media. They like it very airy and porous. Never dried out completely for too long, but never soggy or compacted for long either

The real secret is heat. Almost nothing else matters, really. They like it hotter than most plants and will spew new leaves in the hottest part of the summer and pout in the winter. A heat mat can immediately resurrect any sad Alocasia, especially a Fryek.
