As a musician, I react to anyone who says the Monkees were not a real band. They all had musical background and accomplishments, wiki each of them. They had an unusual story, but did they write, record, and play live, memorable songs. Although they did not write most of their big hits, nor play instruments on some of the songs on the records, but that is true of many famous bands.

I watched Circus Boy in the 50’s and loved Micky. I had the pleasure of speaking with Davy for almost an hour back in the 90’s after a concert for Special Olympics in Harrisburg, Pa. He was charming and delightful even though Micky was my favorite. He told me about his horse farms in England and Pennsylvania. I even have a picture of us which I treasure. So sad when I heard that he’d died way too soon. He truly loved to entertain and loved his fans. I was really impressed that he attended a black church near his farm in Pennsylvania and brought three ladies from his church choir as his backup.

Micky was my favorite because he had a fantastic voice! He did some incredible 2 or 3 part harmonies on some of those earlier songs. Wow!!! Tom and Micky are on top of their games. It's the best Monkees interview I've seen, and a reminder of how good Tom Snyder was. I've long thought that late night needs another serious interviewer like Snyder, someone whose goal is not to make people laugh but to bring out the personality and insight of the subject. This is an awesome example. The other thing that struck me is how much Tom seems to really enjoy himself and the guys in this interview; he didn't always like the people he was talking to, but it's pretty evident that Tom had no problem with the Monkees. This is gold.

I was just 2 years behind you and, yes, it was tough to be an open fan of the monkees when I was in junior high. I was a big fan of the stones, zep, skynyrd, etc. That was fine, but when I bought a monkees record when I went to a record store with a friend, jeez, what a wave of anti-monkee vibe was sent my way. I was so surprised when I started going to punk shows at the Trenton City Gardens around 1985 or 86, that the attendees of punk rock shows were talking about going to see the monkees. I said to myself, "Wait .... What...????? Now (it was 1986) it is cool to be a Monkees fan?" And as far as I can tell, it still is. That's fine, but we stood by the guys when it wasn't cool!!!!

Mick and Davy had good pop music voices and they could stay in tune while making you feel good about the song they were doing. Mike and Peter were accomplished musicians and hit song writers in their own right. For all the hoopla about who played the instruments on their recordings, they sang on every one of their hits. Did anyone ever ask if Elvis really played his guitar on every one of his hit records that someone else wrote? In the end after getting rid of the control freak Don Kirshner they proved that they could write and perform their own hit records. No one is saying that they were not a manufactured pop group, but what the Monkees accomplished in their careers was nothing to sneeze at, by anybody.

The direction their TV show was heading at the end of the second season was very interesting, and it's too bad we didn't have a third bunch of episodes because they would have been out of this world and around the block. By that, I mean they were actually very friendly and respectful and actually cared about their fans in some way. Most bands from their time weren’t like that. Those groups were full of themselves and they smoked constantly in interviews and they didn’t have sympathy for the people in that room who had breathing problems or had problems with their hearing. The Monkees, on the other hand, actually knew how to control their voices and they didn’t chain-smoke constantly and they actually made jokes that were funny. We need more groups like The Monkees!

Tom Snyder reminds me so much of Richard Nixon, he could have played him in a movie. Its surprising at age 72 how much we really loved the Monkees. When the show was on, nobody dared mention the Monkees to fellow guitar players, they just weren't "cool" to us then. But I watched that show almost every episode, just to see electric guitars on TV, guitars I surely could not afford, nor the big amps. The Monkees really take me back to those times when I was learning to play, and even watched the country music shows with the Carter Family and Johnny Cash, which I also never mentioned to other players. I would play along on acoustic guitar because cowboy chords were easy ;-) What a TRIP it was in those days, but the Viet Nam War and the blatant murder of black protests and white kids at the Kent State shootings, none of those murders were ever prosecuted. If you had long hair, you were called all kinds of names too.

In the early 70s I sensed that older kids looked down on the Monkees as fakers and kind of disreputable. Counter-culture politics had a lot to do with that, insisting that "serious" artists did it all on their own. But guys like Desi Arnaz and Ricky Nelson had already proved you could be a great performer while playing a role on TV.
