Alondra de la Parra shows teenagers the world of classical music | Musica Maestra

Ravel’s Boléro for teenagers? Mexican conductor Alondra de la Parra shows that classical music can be appreciated by people of all ages. In this installment of “Musica Maestra" de la Parra traveled to the Kölner Philharmonie. There, she became involved with the WDR Symphony Orchestra in a concert project called “Klassik mal anders” (“Classical music done differently”), in which teenagers aged 13 to 17 have the opportunity to experience and engage with classical music firsthand.
The concert’s program included a series of excerpts from Alberto Ginastera’s ballet “Estancia” op. 8, for which the teenagers have prepared their very own choreography. For many of the participating students, it was their first opportunity dancing to live music-something made even more special thanks to the exceptional musical quality of the WDR Symphony Orchestra.
The students also led the audience through a performance of Maurice Ravel’s famous “Boléro.” Taking up the stage, they interviewed Alondra de la Parra about specific aspects of the piece while sharing their own impressions, and highlighting certain rhythms and instruments.
“Classical music done differently” is a successful example of bridging the gap between teenagers and the world of classical music.

Please expose them to classical music. Being in orchestra and going to music camp saved me in high school. It boosted my self worth. And gave me friends with direction instead of friends that do drugs
