In the comment above this Pat is asking about Larry's choice to bring a ferro rod. I have seen you make friction fires on your channel several times, given the importance of fire on long-term survival would you risk $500k on your friction fire skills or do you think you would take a ferro rod?

I think it's going to come down to Larry, Sam or Carleigh. Of the 10 here I was most impressed with them their first go around and I respect how they didn't make excuses about missing family or being bored as their reasons for tapping out. Jesse is a wild card as well, I look forward to seeing him get the opportunity he didn't have last season.

I would have gave up the snare wire for bow & arrows. He did take fishing line. There are numerous ways for him to fish. He can set trout lines ( for any type fish), and he can experiment setting them at various depths. He doesn't want to only fish on the bottom. He can make a doodling pole, and depending on the length, he could easily manage twice the length in fishing line. This is a much faster way to cover a lot of water. He could whittle some wood lures. They don't need to be fancy, just work and catch fish. Then the bow/arrows opens up any land animals.

@Bill Randall u think 6 strands of wire will hold a bear by the foot? Raccoons chew through 450 lb cable snares.... u single handed ruined these comment sections. Everything u say r big maybes. Who is your favorite one? Mine is Sam, but I think it will be hard for him because he didn't bring Fishing lines and hooks. Imagine if they put him close to some river, I think he made a big mistake with his item choice. Still I would like to see him as a winner. @ken huddleston What about you?

You can cut it with a large knife blade. Just try to use the very bottom as your cutting surface so you don't ruin your primary cutting plane But agreed multitool would be best

Duff Man that's a good point. Except Silky says there saws are made of super steel that never needs sharpening. I reckon that's only good to a point though. I always test my equipment against others to see just what's what. I guess I need to saw up a cord with my Silky to see if it holds up. Just seems odd. Everyone is taking bow saws or other saws this time. No Silky

Yes, Fowler knows how to bank a fire and did so successfully for a long time. Larry isn't Fowler and one bad storm can take out your fire and all your dry materials, have you ever tried starting a fire by friction when everything is soaked and you're hands are numb and frozen? Fire is all important, without it you don't have safe water, heat, or the morale boost that it provides so it stands to reason that a few of your items be dedicated to ensuring you have a fire. It's a huge gamble to risk $500k on friction fires for that long a time in the wilderness, especially since none of these people have tried to survive in Mongolia.

Damon Hicks I was a wilderness survival instructor for three years. Lived in the wild for 3 weeks on, one week off. Never took a lighter or ferro rod. For three years I lit every fire by bow drill. Including three winters

So you have an extensive background in making fire, I have made about 7-8 friction fires and failed more than a dozen and those times that I just couldn't get an ember I was completely drained from the attempts where I just had to call it quits and go to bed thirsty and sore with no fire. I am not sure what Larry's survival background is but apparently he doesn't want to risk losing because he couldn't get a friction fire going.

They should not bring food rations. it will only last a few days and its equal to 1 or 2 animal catches. 1 more item out there would be alot better.

His 2 pounds of rations take up 2 items. The only 1 pound ration listed on the website is rice, sugar and salt. Surely he isn't taking 2/3 lb of salt.... Anyone figure this out?

They should have it so every item under 10 is 50k more on the cash prize so if someone brings nothing with them they win 1 mil instead of 500k then I bet more people would ditch the ferro rod

I hated this guy in both seasons. I watched all the seasons this month because I couldn't stand watching a bunch of whining/crying "men" when my ex was watching it all the time. And then I was bored and hurt my back before Christmas so decided to marathon something. Misery likes company, right? But I really hope Larry got the professional help he needs. He is class-room bipolar. It wasn't anything to do with lack of vitamins, this dude is just an angry and hateful person towards nature. He hated mice, he hated the weather, he just is a hateful person and it showed in the episodes. And his violent mood swings are classic bipolar. He was so depressing to watch that I had to fast-forward when he was on. When he did his happy dance over that fish I thought...man, you do not deserve to be happy because you are so hateful towards Mother Nature. When you want Mother Nature to conform to your wishes you are going to end up a loser...just like Larry.
