This is the CD re-release. They added new Red Book music to replace the MIDI tunes from the disk version and voice-overs for narrations and documents. I was creeped as well. So creeped that I didn't play for a long time (I was nine at 1997). When I put myself together and wanted to play, I couldn't find a single computer that could run it. Now, with DOSBox, I could finally enjoy it. Seems you like Myst. I'm a Myst fan myself. I thought of uploading videos of it.

The ambiance is still quite eerie. Try playing this in the night with the lights out and you'll still get the feel in some parts (especially the library). And the plot is still quite chilling.

I love this game and i am 15 years old. I love how they made story for every character and they made story for Derceto (House). Resident Evil fans don't understand that Alone in the Dark is the game that started survival horror. I love villains from Alone in the Dark games, they are so cool and undead too. People should remember Alone in the Dark, because Alone in the Dark is best game i have ever played. I wish people respect more old games.

One of the things I loved about old games was that they didn't spoon-feed the plot to you. This nasty piece of work made you read SO much. So much clues hidden within every letter, book and scraps of paper. It took so much effort in the reading that it made the game that much intriging. Too bad modern games don't have this quality to them anymore.

I must have been 8 years old when i learned of this game, and boy was i obsessed! I ordered it after playing the demo included on my Mario Teaches Typing CD. I did not know what was going to happen, but the moment that first overgrown rodent jumped through the attic window.... I was so scared, that it took me half an hour to digest the experience of my character being polygon-slaughtered by some giant rat creature and resume the gameplay. but then it really began to intrigue me!

I remember this being the first ever 3D game i played. It's a very good game, at the time there were almost only graphic adventures and arcade games on the pc. This game meld togheter some elements from both kind of games anticipating the "survival horror" and "action adventure" games ages before. A great innovation, both technically and gameplay wise.

I've realised that by running the install.exe with dosbox, the words are now understandable. I tweek a few things and press "update" STILL when I try to run the game in the C drive after already mounting D, it STILL doesn't seem to work. If I screw around enough, it will give me this message that says "not enough memory" I tryed boosting the dosbox memory a bunch, but that didn't seemt to help either...

Thanks for the advice. The problem is, I do have the cd version of the game with sound and music, but it's messed up! You see, there's a missing file with my CD. Anytime I try to run it directly from the CD, it says that I'm missing the "INDARK2.CFG" file. I can, however, run it from the computer, because I copied the missing file into the folder. It now works in the folder version, but I can't write any files to the CD itself!

Inside my CD there are two different Install applications. Winstall and install. Which one should I pick? Winstall works fine even without DosBOX but then i got no sounds in the game. But i have also tried to install it WITH DosBOX and i chose the "install.exe". It gave some strange colours and then freezed! lol

The sound was difficult sometimes to get working even back then (had to have just the right soundcard, etc) near as I recall. On modern computers the game seems to misinterpret what hardware is installed, making it harder still. DOSBox is likely your best bet to get the sound going (if you aren't already using it), but I'm afraid I'm not all too good with that program. :/

Hi again, I've discovered the video capture feature. It should work, but online it says that I need to install some ZMBV codec to play it. So I go to the start menu, find dosbox, and click the "install movie codec" button. I instantly get an error message that says "Installation failed"... :( And if I try to click the instructions file next to it, it says it's missing. The online stuff doesn't seem to have an explaination for this... BTW, I'm using version 0.72. Does this affect it?

I tried playing this on dos box but the sound won't work. :( What am I doing wrong? And I don't have the CD version. Could that be the problem?

Yeah, that's a problem with the installation program. It doesn't work well with DOSBox. I recorded it using the DOSBox recorder (recently switched to FRAPS due to de-synch issues). Maybe you should increase the computer cylcles (I had mine set at 10000) sith Ctrl+F12. If you got a CD version, you can also try making an ISO and mounting it as your CD. It might help correct some sound related problems.

Check the install.exe (and the hardware option). If it doesn't have a MIDI device assigned, it won't have music.

Maybe it's one of the older of the CD-Rerelease, because mine IS the PC version on CD. I don't know about the english dub, but I heard that Jeremy Hartwood's diary reading was excellent.

7th Guest graphics were pre-calculated 3D (like Myst) while Alone in the Dark was real-time 3D. Both were ahead of their time. Alone in the Dark was the first game to use real-time 3D on personal computers (if my memory serves me right).

DosBOX can emulate all kind of old sound cards (including AdLib), but I chose to emulate a simple soundblaster card when I made those videos.

I remember when I got this, I never could get my sound card to work properly so it would only play the sound effects, never the music. God it was so much more scary that way, being able to only hear your footsteps and monsters attacking your ass!
