Alone in the Dark is a critically acclaimed 1992 action-adventure horror video game originally designed by Frédérick Raynal and developed and published by Infogrames for the PC. In 1994, the game was ported for the 3DO by Krisalis. Alone in the Dark is considered a breakthrough and influential title, being the first 3D game in the genre of survival horror. It has spawned four follow-up games as part of the series, as well as two movies loosely based on them.
If this video has you in the mood to play you can download the full game (updated for Windows 7/Vista/XP) from bit.ly/gMvkh2
Alternatively you can download the original DOS demo at www.demu.org

This game was groundbreaking. Even though the music and monsters aren't especially scary, the general atmosphere is eerie, and fraught with anxiety. The camera angles give the impression that you're constantly being watched, and the lack of guidance and background creates a genuine sense of fearful isolation and mystery. The only way to figure out what's going on is to read the books, but this is not forced on you. Everything is left to the player to piece together, and I'm big on that.

I got so obsessed with this game back in the day... I used to get stuck for weeks before figuring out what to do next, sometimes I couldn't even sleep thinking in my head of all of the stories from the books and all of the mansion itself; no other game has made such an impact on me again.

It's a game that hasn't aged well, that's for sure. I give it credit for what it did for gaming, but I don't find this scary. I do think, however, that more games should take bold moves to create horror games based on Lovecraft's work.

I was born 8 years after this game came out but my older brother used to play it a lot on our family's old hand-me-down computers and I loved to watch him play it when I was 5 or 6. It scared me so bad and gave me nightmares (especially the hands in the window during the opening cinematic, and the purple monster crashing through the window in the attic), but it was so fascinating to me. To this day I have such an affection for the early days of 3D-graphics and computer animation, which was sparked because of Alone In The Dark.

When I played this game back in 1998 (before the second millennium), I thought that the spirit-orbs were actually balloons (like "party-balloons"). So I actually developed "balloon-phobia" because of this. Thus whenever I was near a party-balloon (especially if the party-balloons were multi-coloured and joined together), I used to get anxiety. I even had a nightmare as a kid that my hand actually got stuck inside an orb, and I couldn't get my hand out. XD XD Even the music at 45:55 (enemy theme music) started playing in my nightmare as the orb was trying to devour me! :P :P

To the children and young adults of this day and age, this is what we used to call cutting edge. I think it is a testament of the skill of the developers of this game by doing so much with so little. As opposed to today, which there is an overabundance of graphic capability and CPU power, though there is nothing inherently wrong with that, but perhaps you younger folk may come and see how things were when we were the children. I myself watched a friend play this, it was an joy to watch and play.

Of all the pre Wolf games I mentioned; I don't know if Windows had anything to do with those types of games not being made anymore or not(minus flight sims). Well, I don't blame it on the creators of this game. This game was designed to be playable on intel i386 and i486 chips and you just couldn't render any worthwhile 3D graphics with that. 'Magic Carpet' came out only two years after 'Alone in the Dark' but was designed for Pentium chips, and its graphics blow this game out of the water.

I'm not gonna lie, I prefer the original DOS Sound Blaster output rather than the Redbook audio music. There's just something much more alarming and eerie about hearing the electronic buzzes of a Yamaha synthesizer while you run around a maze-like haunted mansion. Especially with the music that plays when danger is afoot, it sounds like real fear rather than some generic MIDI orchestra. I also think the Dance of Death interpretation works in that favor.

I played this game without the silly music and the lights off, and it was pretty scary, after all there aren't very many good games about the Lovecraft mythos.

When I first saw this game I had like 6 y.o. and I was scared as shit. This is the Resident Evil true spiritual predecessor! Thanks for bringing me back to those days. So much nostalgia...!!

Now when you're used to playing modern horror games, or with just the graphics of the modern-age in general. Older stuff just doesn't seem that scary anymore. But God, how I remembered not using our Acorn computer for a long time 'cause of this.

+EnigemCenia Well, that was the point with these kind of games. They are scary mostly because you fill the blanks by using your imagination, instead of them showing you scary things. Even now, if you can get past the graphics and get into the game, it will surely provide you with some goosebumps.

+EX58UD Hey dont worry. were you around during that time? its never too late to go for a small time warp and pick up the remade dos emulators and roms for those games to live through it! i encourage you to pick up those dos games and check them out, its like going through an interactive museum seeing why games play and feel the way they do now. it all started with those old school gems. it wont be the same, coz we were kids when we played those games and thus those titles had a big impact but they can still impact you now. i replayed some titles I missed out too on DOS, NES and SNES. i started with DOS and Commodore64 before getting into consoles like SNES but I missed plenty of great titles as well, still replaying them hehe

+SmurfK yup! that reminds me of the modern day 16-bit RPG top-down games. you know those indie horror games using the same gen tech like zelda - a link to the past, secret of mana, terranigma and such. j-RPG snes looking graphics but clever use of music, compelling story and good dialogue make some of those titles FREAKING SCARY. did you hear of those? ridiculous how its 16-bit or 32bit but it did scare the hell outta me

+neon Well, i'm not so much into jrpgs, but, as far as modern minimal, horror games go, i like Home and I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. You might refer to some "RPG Maker games" named that way due to the software they are created with, and there are thousands of those. Not a big fan personally, as they pack the same gameplay, and, you play it one, you pretty much play it all. But if you don't care about that, you can go on RPG Maker forums and look on some horror ones. There might be some good, but not many people play them. Reviewers don't go crazy about them either, there are in an special category, mostly because there are too many of them, and it takes too much time to find really good ones.

It's the perfect example of something that's old school. The graphics are kind of... well, StarFox style, but not only was this a good game for its time, it was revolutionary in survival horror, and its gameplay mechanics would essentially be the main basis for the classic Resident Evil, as you probably have noticed.

same. My older brother also played this always in the olden days and I would get the creeps, even if from the soundtrack alone. The spirit orbs and the Vagabond in the library were the scariest entities in the entire game imo. I remember having a nightmare once as a kid where the spirit orbs were after me and I got my hand stuck inside of them lol

28:30-29:00 - forgot to take the Talisman, which is crucial in the Tree cave. Also, at the end escaped through the wine cellar, which would not be possible since you didn't move the barrels away beforehand (in reality they would be blocking the exit).

thats probably because you didnt play since the first gen of gaming like others. sound ridiculous, but pace to that time didnt feel slow because it was the beginnings. it was much later that frame rate and graphics became this important to players

+neon I didn't play since the first gen of gaming? Why, because I think a game is too slow? I started on Colecovision and original Atari, with some Comodore thrown in if I could get on it at school. No, that's not Pong, sorry. But I do know the capabilities of consoles back then and they weren't all this slow.

+pumkin54 hey Im sorry. I re-read my comment and I came off harsh and very unpleasant. I apologize, sorry about that. I didnt play pong to and started with Com64 and NES/SNES (so not 1st gen either) I just get upset at kids nowadays dissing older games for no reason. I know I feel ownership and protective over this culture because it was my own childhood but it does seem like nowadays its all about quick, fast-paced, graphics orientated gameplay. you are not one of those people and even if you were I respect other peoples opinion. It does look slow and outdated, my point is that its useless to judge the games from the past by the standard from the present. thats all I meant. it does look slow tho lol :)

I think nobody answered, right? To play, he most probably uses DOSBox, a free program which lets you emulate a DOS environment, very handy for old games. To record the videos there are tons of possibilities. Fraps, for example, but I remember correctly, DosBox comes with a built-in option to record videos. I hope this helps
