Alone in the Dark Reboot is a flop. The game failed fell short of financial expectations and also didn't review very well. Embracer Group lays off thousands. But maybe the ones running the show at Embracer should lay themselves off because they handled the game wrong. Naughty Dog teases a new game and IGN buys out its video game journalism competition. It's a shame as I was cheering for AITD to do well. The director even worked on Penumbra and Amnesia series if I'm not mistaken. Anyway, the game itself was decent, but I guess that's hardly a compliment when you're trying to stand out from the crowd. I probably would've given the studio more time and resources to iron everything out and maybe even rethink some of the game's core ideas. Having said that, I really have to wonder what were the expectations Embracer had for the game, because it's not like AITD was ever huge in the gaming landscape and the final product doesn't even appear to have cost much to make (Hollywood actors aside).

You ought to talk to your friend Charles at revolution. He's going down the same dark path with broken sword. Adventure games is a niche genre and in every interview he mentioned this tiny focus group who were too slow to realize how adventure games worked. so he's going to dumb them down and turn them into some kind of casual game, where hotspots disappear or the game has blinking dust on top of hot spots to try to lead you on a rope to the solution. Or he's going to try to go the return to Monkey Island route which is a casual and a hard mode except the hard mode is also casual lol. In closing I love adventure games it is my favorite genre but they're never going to take over again as far as popularity and I wish developers would stop pretending a new theoretical fan base is going to show up for them because they're not. You know who backed the Broken Sword Kickstarter that just raised $600,000 the old fans like us who like real adventure games, not the kids who apparently can't figure out how they work, just saying Charles.

In my opinion AITD wasn't scary in the least. I enjoyed the game and there were a few standout moments to me, but I feel like the entire game should have taken place mostly in the mansion. None of the stages really stood out to me and the only 'scare' I actually liked involved the dead body in the sheet. Other than that, nothing about that game blew me away.

Sad to hear that, because I thought the game was really decent, and user reviews on Steam seem to agree - the people that did buy the game seemed to have liked it. I guess that the IP is truly burned. After the terrible 2008 game and that awful useless multiplayer-shooter, maybe a $30 price tag with less production assets could have worked. Because the New Orleans horror house setting is attractive, but I think the demo didn't do it any favors given the price tag. Yeah, it did work for Resident Evil 7, but one has to point out that Resident Evil 6 didn't do nearly as much damage to the franchise as Alone in the Dark 2008 did. (Also, Capcom's Kitchen demo was masterfully executed for its time). Well, time for someone to buy out the rights to Sweet Home and try to reboot that Pre-Resident Evil horror franchise instead.

1200 simultaneous players on Steam is better than almost any modern adventure game is going to draw. Our favorite genre just doesn't light up the charts any more. It also doesn't help that I couldn't get a physical copy anywhere. Despite badly wanting to play it, I eventually gave up trying to order it. Shame, because Alone In The Dark is my favorite horror franchise (primarily off the backs of the first two original games). Also, Naughty Dog sucks.

1200 would be amazing for most adventures but when you spend over 80 million that’s ugly. Ahhh man. I loved Uncharted 4. Definitely not a typical adventure but the stories are incredible

@@AdventureGameHotspot I agree. The Uncharted saga was exceptional. Sadly, Naughty Dog is not the same organization or team that delivered those experiences to us. The days of them being able to craft something that wholesome and special are long gone.
