I loved playing AitD 4 and still maintain that its rendering of Shadow Island is one of the most Gothic and atmospheric achievements in survival horror history. Thanks for your review, and summary of Darkworks' unfortunately short history.

Now I understand why Alone in the Dark fell into the pit of ignorance. When I talk about games, none of my friends actually heard of it. Alone is an awesome saga, I really enjoyed playing it, and it would be my pleasure to play another game that could be just as good as the original trilogy, that FOR ME, were the best Alones so far.

This is perhaps my favourite Alone in the Dark game, and the first one that I ever played. I remember playing it when it first came out, on my shiny new PC. :) Sadly, I also remember the disappointment that was Alone in the Dark 2008 (which, unfortunately, is still a ton better than the newest installment, Alone in the Dark: Illumination). This review really takes me back.

This was great game , the first survival horror game i played , when i was playing this game i did not have a memory card , it was really annoying starting from beginning every time , finally got the card anf finished it , this was in 2002 and then did a few speed runs too. ending credits song was also great , have it in my gym playlist even now .

I came here because my mind suddenly made me remember the games front cover, and apparently as a toddler my mom got me this game for the ps1 (I was born in 2000) and all I remember from it is playing it and getting to the point where you meet the old woman in the manor.
@shoobeej19555 жыл бұрын
It's a terrific game and very much agreed on its flaws, though for everything that it does get right it does indeed make for a creepy and deeply atmospheric horror game. The sound design is simply fantastic (having played all versions aside from GBC, PSX stands out to be the best with sound whereas Dreamcast version is better in general). Quite sad this series doesn't get the appreciation it deserves and that Resident Evil series is regarded as progenitor of 3D survival horror. To be honest, I love the reading aspects of the game. It provides the fictional world with its own lore. Not enough games do this anymore. Reading through documents and books gives it a bit of a investigatory aspect to it, not to mention it is very much in keeping with Lovecraft's story design considering most of it is dependent upon piecing together of disseminated and scattered knowledge to reveal horrors behind the veil.

I personally wouldn't mind seeing an rebuild of this game with up-to-date 3d modeling/rendering and sound. A little smoothimg out of the story wouldn't hurt, either. The core ingredients are there. Just needs some tweaks to put it over the edge.
@SaltTheFries869 жыл бұрын
You are an excellent reviewer. The reason I went to this video is that I had just felt an urge to dust off my Dreamcast and revisit this game. I hadn't actually played it on DC, I had played it on PS1, but DC is the console that I still own.
@redfeildre3499 жыл бұрын
My problems with the game came towards the end. Once you picked up a certain weapon you just kept shooting an endless spawning of monsters. All horror at that point was gone for me. Did not much care for Edwards ending. Took me a long time to figure out how to get to that ending and I thought it was kind of lame. Did not ruin the game for me though. I did not mind reading the journals and assorted other things. I kind of liked it. Despite my few complaints, this game was great. Beats Resident Evil for mood, music, and story. New Nightmare is better than Code Veronica IMO.

Its a shame the PS2 version never came up in North America. It would make it much more convenient to get. I had to hunt down a Dreamcast and a copy of the game for 75$ (ish) to finally getting to play it. Yes i could had get the cheaper PS1 version but i really don't like how PS1 games look. When there is a superior version, i want the superior one. But the dreamcast weirdly enough seem to have problem reading it at times. It may be my lense but Resident Evil 2 and Illbleed works perfectly fine in it... Sometimes i have to restart it many times for it to read.

So the reason Edward Carnby is a different person in this game is he’s basically like Link from the Zelda series. On another note, I enjoyed the first 3 games a lot. This game wasn’t bad, but there were some game breaking scenarios that could come up, which really bothered me. If you don’t save a bullet for the mirror, you basically have to start over.
@SaltTheFries869 жыл бұрын
I love the series, I even liked the 2008 reboot. The only part I hadn't finished is AITD3. I've really enjoyed this part. I really liked the puzzles which were actually real puzzles that made you think and process the data you collected, they weren't stupid trial-and-error ones created solely to remind you that you are in a game like in Resident Evil.

I just bought this PLAYSTATION ONE game on the PLAYSTATION NETWORK for the PLAYSTATION 3 as a download 1 day ago!! If you want a really good ageless game you really can't go wrong this game!!!! :) funny... I remember playing a demo of this game way back on the playstation one, but... Never got around to buying a full copy till today....... Over 10 years later.... I feel bit sad that I never got around to this game & a bit relieved to try something new, but yet old game on my playstation 3!!!! I will add what I still read & remember about the game on the flashlight thing like using it will scare some enemy's away or draw them to you!!!! Pick & chose your battles wisely in this game is a must!!!!!!! & I still can't wait to play it!!!!!!!!!! XD last old game I play was Parasite Eve 2 also a great game!! & I always love every Resident Evil ever made!! So playing these old games is kind of easy for me in a way as a result!!!! :D

While the 1992 original is a pioneer of survival horror games, this 2001 reboot is the first modern game in the series. The story, characters, setting and atmosphere are all on point and very engaging. The game has serious flaws though like re-spawning enemies, some very confusing & cryptic puzzles, and the boss fights were at times confusing and frustrating to handle as well due to their puzzle-like sequence. Even so, I enjoyed New Nightmare for what it is, and it was suppose to be the beginning of another trilogy, but those plans got scrapped, which is unfortunate. I feel the series would've been in far better shape had they just proceeded with the New Nightmare reboot trilogy. The 2008 game and 2015 Illumination were so bad, they virtually killed the series. So, it's an amazing miracle that Alone in the Dark 2024 got made which is now possibly the best game in the series thanks to modern gameplay & graphics, and being a faithful & respectful homage to the 1992 original.

Yea thats true. The only issue is there are so mutch projects on kick starter that soon it will have so many people and teams that will be hard to stick out from the others. Still i would wish then the best they sound like an amazing team who deserve to do the games they wish to do.
@davidhass3lh0ff11 жыл бұрын
for big a project no kickstarter would no help them. but for a smaller project with a small team it could be a way to get funding, or at least fund the final stages of a project like what was done for broken sword 5 or dreamfall chapters.

The con that you stated about reading a lot of the text in the game, I didn't think of it as bad. I mean Edward Carnby is an investigator he has to look at a bunch of evidence before making convictions. It felt like I was really investigating what was going on as opposed to RE. But at the time I felt that this game was the perfect horror game.

I wonder if anyone can confirm if I am sane or not. I distinctly recall reading an article about this game before it came out. It described some of the enemies such as the giant insect monsters. (Rippers?) And also some of the weapons. The triple barrel shotgun is in there. The 12 shot revolver is in there. But I also remember them talking about a weapon that fired bouncing magnesium tipped razor bladed discs. Anyone else recall this? It didn't seem to be in the game...

@kazaloolovesgames8 жыл бұрын
I like your reviews quite a bit so thankyou for these. But I always laugh when people say "Alone in the Dark" came out before Resident Evil as if that makes the Alone in the Dark series as good. There is a reason that the Resident Evil series crushed the Alone in the Dark series in popularity before they became stupid action games and got rid of the horror aspect completely. Resident Evil refined the tank-control pre-rendered background horror games. The gameplay was, according to just about everyone, better, the characters more interesting and the plots more memorable. Sure the plots are stupid and convoluted but they are more memorable. I didn't beat New Nightmare but I liked it well enough from what I can remember. It still wasn't as refined as Resident Evil or Silent Hill and I suspect that will always be the problem with the Alone in the Dark series, it seems to never be on the level of it's competitors game wise and thus is will never come out on top.
@KeeperOfCliffsTone8 жыл бұрын
thing is alone in the dark was first 3d survival horror...and besides i like alone in the dark games waaaay more than resident evil...so its all down to preference
@kazaloolovesgames8 жыл бұрын
It's not all down to preference though. It is a fact that Alone in the Dark games aren't anywhere near as popular as Resident Evil games. That part is a stone cold fact.
