Is the SOL Thermal Bivvy designed to be used in a hot tent over the top of a proven cold weather sleep system ?? Lars ... if you are going to test stuff out then you need to test it out under the circumstances and environment for which it was designed, otherwise your test and any opinion you form from it is pointless .... or worse .. untrue ! Would you take your hunter skis out on Lake Baikal mid summer to test them out on the ice ? Would you wear to test ice rated thermal clothes at mid-day in the Sahara desert ? I'm guessing your answer is no ... so why would you "test" an emergency bivvy out in such luxury conditions ... ? Thoughtlessness / not thinking correctly is a sign of something Lars ... and it's not because of Ergot in the tea / bread / biscuits.

So you think a "Hot-Tent" stays warm all night? 20 minutes after the stove burns out the temp in the tent will be almost the same as outside. Maybe 3-4 degree C "warmer". I do not stuff the stove full of firewood before I sleep, because it is pointless for the reason mentioned above. Yes Alasdair, Thoughtlessness / not thinking correctly is a sign of something.... This gotta be the KZbin Professor comment of 2019 so far. Well done :)
@alasdairblackmore25925 жыл бұрын
@@SurvivalRussia : No, I don't think a "Hot tent" stays warm at night ... whatever gave you the idea that I did ? In order to maintain a "Hot tent" the user has to keep the stove going / burning / producing heat by feeding / keep feeding it ... and turning the airflow to low. I suspect you slept like a log in all that kit, and you didn't wake up to feed the fire because you were "snug as a bug in a Russian rug" ... and far too busy dreaming of whatever it is you dream about to even consider putting something like "waking up in the night and carrying out a chore" on your list of "must do's" ... In any case, in a "real" survival situation a user of a SOL Thermal Bivvy bag [or similar] would more than likely be already cold to the bone [and hungry] prior to getting in it, and may even not have a fire in any form other than regret / wish. It doesn't bode well for students of survival when the survivalists they try to learn from ignore facts. Oh, I get the fact that you didn't like the bag [or the idea of the bag] from the moment you laid eyes upon it ... I saw that ... however, to then show your resentment of it by making it fail a test it wasn't designed for speaks volumes ... VOLUMES ! I hope it works better as a sled cover for you ... I really do ! as there is nothing worse than being given kit that you cant use because of some deep rooted mental problem, right !.

@@grizzlycountry1030 I never called myself an "expert". If that bag condensates that much used as bivvy like I did, it will create just as much condensation used inside the bag. As said, a plastic bag is a plastic bag, no matter what.

I should add that anyone who tries to crawl into an aluminum foil blanket with no fire and hungry to sleep these temperatures will be dead, and won't be able to leave a bad review for this product. Thank you for your videos Lars. Semper Fidelis, from Minnesota USA.
@SurvivalRussia5 жыл бұрын
@@alasdairblackmore2592 Of course I did not stoke the fire. I had the Canadian bag, outer bag only. There are nothing fact based about your comment. The facts I and others can take away from this experience is, that the Thermal Bivvy creates condensation. A lot of it. It is not breathable, so it will create condensation regardless of being used in or outside the sleeping bag. That is a fact as well. I did not make it fail. It did that all on it's own. That should be obvious. In my opinion, this bag will do a hungry and cold to the bone user no good at all. Maybe it will do for a wind break for an hour or two at the 50F/+10C it is rated for. Anyway, if the user have no means to make a fire, the bag will only make the users clothes wet or damp. If the user is already wet, the user will not be able to dry out inside the bag. This bag is a gimmick. The breathable OD green bag SOL makes might be better. In the product description of the OD green bag, SOL mentions the condensation problems with "other bags", so they might be aware of the problems.

When you get the powerbank for the batteries, maybe give the "heat patches" (the medical ones, that last from 8-12 hours, the ones without salve, the active-coal ones) a chance, we used them on a movie filming in -10°C. Wrap them in some fabric and this wrap around the cam. Needs some test with thermometer how much fabric you use to get best working temperature for the batteries. We had a bigger Cam, but this trick should also work on smaller ones and is useful for longer trips outside and to keep the backup batteries warm.

The SOL Thermal bivvy should be used inside the sleeping back, the purpose is to avoid the sleeping bag to be wet or increase the humidity from your body. This is used when you use the sleeping bag longer time, one or two days does not matter, but week yes. If the isolation will be dry, will be functional, if wet is useless. The SOL thermal bivvy will keep the humidity from your body from the sleeping bag ;-). The tent looks like realy great.

Thank you for taking the time to check out the Thermal Bivvy from our sister brand Survive Outdoors Longer. The Thermal Bivvy is a non-breathable material primarily designed for survival situations, where there would not be external heating and you would likely not have a sleeping bag or a tent. In such a survival situation, you would experience much less condensation, though there may still be some due to the nature of the material. That is why we included the side-venting, so you can regulate the temperature if you become too hot and begin to sweat. For non-survival situations, we recommend using the bivvy alone on nights 50 degrees Fahrenheit and warmer. If you’d like a bivvy to use over a sleeping bag for recreational purposes, we recommend you try the breathable Escape Bivvy or the Escape Pro Bivvy. If you’d like to try one of our breathable bivvies, we’d be happy to send you one to test out.

I believe your SOL bag woul be best placed under your sleeping bag as a barrier to cold beneath you, especially when sleeping on a cot. I wrapped my poncho around my sleeping bag in the Army and had similar results. Aside from using it for emergencies, I would limit it to use as a ground cloth. It would be good to keep it in your vehicles in case you get stranded.

Mylar doesn't breath, you have to have air openings down the side to avoid condensation. I made a poly/Mylar quilted bag with many holes down the side to breath and get little condensation. The Mylar is between 2 poly cloth layers which captures a lot of the moisture, I will dry it or turn it inside out the next night. That and a few liners (inside and outside) makes my summer mummy bag good to 0C. It weighs a few pounds and fits in a 4 liter compression sack.

I tested one myself and not for a KZbin channel, but for myself. It was only good for very short-term use. I tried it both with and without a sleeping back with the same results. And I wasn't in a tent at all. There is technology of course available to make something like this breathable, but at the SOL price point that's not going to happen. I never get tired of your videos. I love your realistic approach to the demonstration of items. I have to give you a big thumbs up for your integrity in not promoting items for profit with the items you demonstrate. Too many (in my opinion fake) "survivalists" demonstrate items that are then linked to a site where they get commissions from the sale of the item even if the item is gimmicky or even illegal. One such channel is Survival Lilly who promotes the purchase of Lock Picks (for example) with which the possession of may get one arrested on Felony charges in many many places.
@Mister5105 жыл бұрын
Lock picks are legal where Lilly lives, and she tells the viewer to check their local laws every time she talks about the pick set in her urban survival pack. Everyone in the USA says you should carry a handgun for survival (and they're right!) but those are illegal lots of places too.
@ekos0125 жыл бұрын
@@Mister510 - NO, she doesn't. In many places it is legal to OWN lock picks but if you carry them outside of your own property you can be charged with possession of burglary equipment and must prove in court that you had no intent to burglarize. Perhaps you'd like to explain exactly when one would need lock picks other than to open your own door. Lilly promotes lock picks as necessary for "urban survival" - how so? Is one going to lock pick their way into someone else's house to take food etc? If lock picks are needed in case one looses one's keys then they should invest a dollar into an extra key and leave the lock picks to locksmith's that are authorized to use them. Lilly is also not just airing her videos in her country. In the US in the States of Mississippi, Nevada , Ohio , Tennessee, Virginia and Washington D.C.lock picks are illegal.If one possess lock picking tools in any of these states, you can be charged with intent to commit a crime. Whether you actually do intend to break the law is irrelevant. Another example: In Poland possessing, producing or obtaining lock picks is illegal if your profession or occupation does not require it. Hungary: In Hungary, lock picks are considered military equipment; ownership is completely prohibited, even for professional locksmiths.

No it does not. It is still just a plastic bag and plastic does not breathe :)

@@SurvivalRussia When I used to camp there was a liner called a vapor barrier that you climb in and and then climb in the sleeping bag to keep all that moisture from getting into the bag and making you cold. It will keep you a little warmer but you might be damp when you wake up, but at least your bag is dry.

Has anyone from SOL contacted you as to what went wrong ? I'm glad you do these kind of tests on gear and show us first hand an honest review of equipment. Thank you for all these videos you do !!

No, but they have made some breathable SOL bags, so they are most likely aware of the problems with these bags.

Myself and the wife love your videos Lars but the condensation from the SOL bag wasn't a surprise to me at all. I have been thinking about using a vapour barrier inside my winter bag and using a sleep liner inside the vapour barrier.....kinda like your foot wraps...that way I can dry the sleep liner during the day and just turn the vapour barrier inside out and dry for the next night. I camp in temps down to the mid minus 40's as well and condensation is a never ending issue for dang sure.

I liked the tent and the stove set-up, but didn't know that the comments section was going to be such a shit-storm. In my opinion (and I am no expert either) Survival Bags, Blankets are meant to be used for folk going into or already in the state of hypothermia and as said by Lars, this bag is meant to raise the body temperature by 5 degrees, (One degree Celsius is 1.8 times larger than one degree Fahrenheit). However, once body temperature is somewhere near normal, the survival bag, bivvy should be removed as condensation will occur which will then lower the temperature of the person in/under it. IF you want to sleep in it overnight then, you're going to wake up in a pool of condensation/sweat that might be frozen and you wake up DEAD. Air puncture holes might help whilst still keeping some thermal reflective properties. Mylar Space Blankets should, but do not carry detailed instructions for their use (as far as I know) and again, in my humble opinion, can be dangerous if used for prolonged periods of time which is NOT their intended use. As part component of a super shelter, a temporary hypothermia survival blanket, fine, but that is it in my book.
