You should one day spend a week in Irkutsk and nearby Baikal: it will blow your mind. Irkustk has beautiful architecture like st Petersburg (as the decemberist fled there); and as for Baikal it is my favourite part of Russia. I am still living here as an Australian for four years now, I love it.

You can see the nerpa but they’re found at the northern end of the lake. The Russian name for the Baikal Seal, its the only exclusively freshwater seal. All the rest in Russia are subspecies of the Arctic Ringed Seal.

Один раз в жизни ехал из Владика в Москву на поезде. Случилось это после ДМБ в 1989 году, нас было четверо и командиры не смогли достать билеты на самолет. Ехали в купе, никакой заварной "бомжатины" в те времена просто не существовало, набрали с собой тушенки и консервированных компотов. Пассажиры в вагоне менялись не реже, чем в в вашем плацкарте, не один раз, от конечной до конечной доехали только мы, это нам сильно помогло разнообразить рацион путем обмена консервов на другие продукты, которые люди обычно берут с собой в дорогу. Самым нашим лучшим другом стала проводница, которая к нам оиносилась почти, как мать и дажа выдала чайник, чтобы мы смогли помыть головы, душевой в вагоне не было.

I have taken our AMTRAK Trains here in the US.....most of the Train Cars are OLD from the 1990s, lol. The modern new high-speed-ISH ones called ACELA only go from Boston to NYC and then to Washington DC and back. I have taken the Overnight train from South Florida to North Carolina (20 hours)in a cabin class called a ROOMMETTE. It fits 1 or 2 people travelling together maximum. If you are alone they Do Not put another passenger in the cabin with you. You stay SOLO. Food is provided free with the private cabin selection, breakfast-lunch-dinner. Long Distance train travel in the US is Very Very Expensive if you choose Private Cabins, the most expensive cabins has a toilet and shower IN the room. The Roommette has a Sink and the Toilet and a Shower are at the back end of the each Train Cars shared with other Roommette passengers. The views from Florida to up East towards New York is NOT that Pretty to look at unlike yours,lol. The longest trips which take about 4 nights and 5 days from the East, Midwest all the way to the West Coast states such as California, Oregon, Washington states.

And yes, even though these cities are frozen in winter, in summer they get very very hot! Novosibirsk is situated this way that just as frozen air gets trapped inside so does warm air. Lisa, you should definitely 'properly visit' both Krasnoyarsk and Novosibirsk, in the future of course! 🙂 And i agree so much with Moscow feeling like home now! I know i would feel the same)
