Yeah the ladder. That was a disaster! It is hard to tell because of the light level, but that was very late. I was way too tired to be using sharp tools and it shows. I didn't have an axe, and the shape of my shovel made notches hard to cut. Also at this point the locking mechanism on my knife on my multi tool was broken and I didn't want to use it unless I had to. So my only option was the saw. I called this the "world's worst bushcraft ladder" when I finished it. 😆

@peteralbano haha that's great. And a lot of people don't realize what exhaustion can do to you. I have a lot of scars from being tired and still trying to get it done. I'm just glad it wasn't worse. I got stabbed with the teeth on my silky and it seriously took me a month to heal all the way.

@@mikeyheltonjr this is why you must take the block of salt, the pemmican and the gorp, and mix in some diced, boiled, fried cambium When you have to PERFORM, you need food and sleep. You can't sleep worth a hoot when you're hungry. or have leg cramps/are dehydrated or if your food sucks. The salt helps you choke down bland food, helps prevent cramps, helps you drink more water, avoiding dehydration.

I was surprised by Peters tap out, but it's like Jordan Jonas of SE 6 said; If you have any sort or form of skeletons in your closet that make it so you can't be alone with yourself for a long period of time, you can't win this show. Maybe I missed it, but what do you think of Dub's decision to not store his food but rather to eat it as soon as he catches it. As long as you're catching or finding food on a steady pace it seems doable to me, but what do you think?
@mikeyheltonjr
@mikeyheltonjr 2 ай бұрын
I did discuss Dubs decision about eating his food. I'm sorry, I didn't have my time stamps in the correct place. I have fixed it now, though. It will be the time stamp named Dub gets a fish. And it is a hard thing to be out there and have anything on your mind. I also struggled a lot with emotions and bad thoughts. It's something that can't be helped. Just remember when you are on the show, the only mirror is a camera pointed at you. You are the only person you see. And it's just human nature to judge yourself, but it's a lot worse when there's nothing to take your mind off of it.

Another great review Mikey. I did not pick up on Dusty's different broadheads, good eye my friend. Let us know when you go live with the Etsy shop. Seems like a lot of fish have been caught early thus far. Hard to tell with the editing but you would know better than I on that. I too am worried that Isaiah is in a runoff from water??? Looked like it from the angle of the camera but not sure. Peter was killing it with the fish. Shocked that he taped as he was doing so well but understand everyone has a breaking point and he meet his. I still have much respect for him for making it as far as he did. I am sure that is not easy to even get on the show and then all the tests and such just getting to that point. My opinion is that him missing his family brought him to his decision to return to them and that's his call to make. Thanks for sharing.

@QuesttogetontheAloneShow-qq3cz the more I thought about Isaiahs shelter placement the more I thought we'll it's already getting really cold so rain might not be a big worry after all. I guess we will see. And I think Peter Made the right choice. If he would have stayed longer I think it would have just got worse.

make 4" mesh netting first, since that work goes so fast and uses so little string. It's very easy to pass your netting needle thru such wide meshes. If you've caught all of the big fish in your area, overlap and offset 2 segments of the 4" mesh netting. Sew thru the meshes here and there and you'll swiftly have a lot of 2" mesh netting. This method lets you return to having 4" mesh netting if you want/need to do so. Several wraps of 2" mesh netting around a stick-frame "box" will suffice to catch birds, rabbits, and if you do another wrap, it will trap crabs. Another couple of wraps and it will hold crawdads, too. Sit down and relax to make netting. Dont have the bs setup that makes you stand there and try to weave netting.

if you know to use flu flu fletching, arrows only fly 20m or so before they fall to earth. A pair of scissors can trim the fletching to give you whatever range you want. Also, Zwickey judohead blunts have spring-steel crosswires that catch in debris, making the arrow stand on end, very easy to find. The coil sping in a judohead reduces the risk of an impact on a log or rock from knocking off fletching or the nocking-piece of the arrow..

oh man, im watchin the episode where they pulled ya right now, brother. i feel so bad for ya. one time i went back to IL to try and set up a spot for my family. i tried everything but stuff kept fallin through and leavin me stranded in places. most of the friends that said they had help or leads, didnt even answer after i traveled 1000 miles away from my loved ones. i spent a whole summer failing, and was away for about three months, cryin every night. i took a train back, and only had a few hundred bucks after starving myself to save all i could workin. one guy had me remodel his whole house, and work like his slave. then he gave me an envelope with 300 bucks at the end.....i guess he minused the meals. but when i came back, my heart seemed to love my wife and kids a lil deeper....the kids for sure. that said, i dont think i would do it again. who knows why stuff happens the way it does. but love is more valuable than money every day, brother. you already know

@largefamilyreviews9 that experience changed everything for me. It really did. I knew who i was when I went into the woods, and after that guy died of starvation, and I was stripped of all pride and dignity, and after i felt what it was like to suffer and still fail, I found that the ones I left behind still loved me. And i never stopped loving them. They were the reason I pushed as far as I did. There are people talking bad about Peter from season 11 now. We'll I'm here to tell you that on day 6 or 7 of my journey I was hungry and exhausted and emotionally wrecked, I almost tapped then but that first grouse gave me the little victory I needed. Then I got sick, and that almost took me out, but I decided to sleep on it. Then 2 days later I got lost for hours, and that was even worse because I was so darn tired already. If it wasn't for my family, I would have quit very early. I believe that. There is only so many times you can hit a wall before you fall over if that makes any sense.

since season 11 is on a shallow RIVER, they need to catch 400 lbs of fish in a coupe of weeks. Those rivers freeze solid in winter, so the fish MUST all migrate to the deeper lakes. You get about a week to make most of your netting and the raft, and then you have to average catching at least 30 bs of fish per day. 400 lbs of fish is just 120,000 calories, enough to lose no weight for a month of being pretty active. A small, 200 lb bear, fat for hibernation, offers 200,000 calories, if you save the blood, Eat the marrow, the brain the organs, the blood, That's enough food for 50 days of being active (enough to keep the producers off of your butt). The odds are that the bear will be a bigger one and of course, you'll also have the fish and the cambium. Giving up 50 lbs of live weight fish (15,000 calories and 50 lbs of leftovers after you fillet the fish, is not enough to make any difference, but it's enough to bait in bears from miles away. Boil the fish parts, extracting the fat from the heads and skins, to help the cambium pass thru your guts. Those parts will still rot and stink, getting the bears to come to the stake and log bait-box, 10m from your tree-blind. Bears can detect such a bait from miles away. They can also tell if there's ENOUGH food there to be worth the trip to get it. The guts from a small beaver are not enough of a bait and not worth building the bait box, so that martens, weasels, wolverines can't steal the bait.

when I worked as a garbage truck driver in CO, I saw a little 200 bear flip over a loaded dumpster with one casual flip of its paw. You are NOT making any primitive shelter able to keep out a grizzly! if he really wants inside of that cabin, he'll be in there in a few seconds, at most.

IF you know to have experimented with fasting before you go to the show, IF you know to have put yourself into ketosis 2 weeks+ before you launch, and pig-out on protein and fat 2 days before you launch, you can go like hell the first two days on no food at all. the rations are 10,000 calories and you can add 2000 calories of the cambium. So you can eat 2000 calories per day for 6 day, which is enough to keep you going when all you are doing is making netting by the fire, under the plowpoint made from the producer's tarp. So you get 6 days like that, and you can handle 1-2 days more with no food at all. So you have 10 days of functionality, with ease. You'l have the raft, chumline, shelter, clay-refining pits, stone-boiling pits, water storage basket, fire making tools, done in the first 4 days. You probably wont need the chumline and might not need the raft, either, (at first) since youll first be setting 2 ft wide baited net weirs in 18" of water. Water cools down more slowly than air and it's 50F degrees when you launch. Take off your pants and footwear, wade in, set up the weir, and get out. If you've got dry debris there with which to dry off your body, a fire, hot rocks, the reflective tyvek bivy, dry clothing right there on the bank of the body of water, you can again get dry and warm in 3-4 minutes. You dont HAVE to start the clay refining pits so early, either. So you might well have 8 days of making 200 sq ft of 4" mesh netting per day. This is done by unraveling the cotton rope hammock, unraveling the rope, unraveling the 3 strands which comprise the rope, spinning 5 of the 44 cotton threads into string, weaving the string into netting.

even better, of course, is to take a slingbow and 3 piece, take down arrows, You can remove the ferrules from carbon fiber arrow shafts and fit them to wooden shafts and i"m pretty sure that the producers have already let guys being non-wooden arrows. When you make the five 1.5 gallon each baked clay cookpots and their lids, also make the 50+ clay balls so that you dont HAVE to use arrows on small game anymore.

@user-ci2mn1oy3w they have standards for everything. You can not take take-down arrows. You also can't have a sling bow. You can have a slingshot, but you can't make it on site because the pound age of the slingshot has to be test pre drop. Fluflus are your best bet for sure. And I agree with you again on the shelter. If a bear wants in there is very little that will keep it out.

@rdnkrfnk Thank you, my friend. I'm not sure about the sharpened stakes. There are rules against some forms of trapping and stuff that may seem inhumane. So that might be why. Also, there are rules against baiting in some parts of the world. If it is legal to bait bears, I think you have to have a barrel for the bait. And of course, that's not something everyone on Alone gets their hands on. And about his tap, sometimes the things in your head can hender you more than a physical wound. Going into the woods hunting by yourself with whatever technology you carry with you to enjoy at camp is completely different than spending that same amount of time in complete isolation. When you can't contact your family, they start becoming all that is on your mind. And when your thoughts start going down that rabbit hole, there's very little chance you can come back from it. I had very similar experiences. I think one of the major things that helped me was the ability to write letters to my wife. And I think we have all been cut at one point or another. I cut my hand really bad during my casting videos. That is why there was a bandage there. And then I hit my shin with a hatchet that glanced off when I was splitting kindling about a week before I went to Canada, lol. It's inevitable. if you use something that is sharp, and you're gonna get cut.

Do you know why they limit you to 9 arrows? I wondered if it was a random choice or if there might be a reason( 9 arrows fit in a quiver???). I also thought that had to be the most large fish caught in a single day. Definitely he has the pounds of fish caught in a day record! Someone from this season caught five little fish… or rather stunned them. I seem to remember someone else may have caught five fish on another season, but they were maybe 14 inch fish not the giant fish of this season. I was shocked when he tapped, I was selfishly thinking sleep on it one night! He was an interesting and good contestant. I would have liked more of his story. I pray he and his family are well and in a healthier place emotionally. Thank you for your insight!

@brendahowrey4819 I'm not exactly sure why they set a limit of 9 arrows. I don't think it has anything to do with how much a quiver can hold because every quiver is different. One of my stick quivers holds 6, and the other only holds 4. I think they just had to set a limit lol and why not make it an even 9? And you are right about the fish. I forgot all about that, I even talked about it in the other recap. But he definitely has everyone on the most weight for sure. And I truly hope he and his family were able to take something great away from this.

@@mikeyheltonjr the first few seasons, the arrow limit was 6 arrows. They reduced the size of the gillnet (and its meshes) by 2/3rds , cut the size of the rations in half, so they BAIT you into wasting time and calories with the bowhunting. They KNOW that no two of you are going to get a big animal and it takes TWO contestants to keep the show going. I'd only take 3 broadheads. If I cannot take a slingbow and take down arrows, I'd rather have the snarewire. than a bow, even tho snarewire has never made a difference. EYE know how to make it effective.

150 yds is 450 ft and it takes an arrow at LEAST 2 full seconds to travel 450 ft. Even if you DID have everything calculated just right, the animal can easily take a step every 1/2 second. Such a shot is taken only by a complete a-hole, uncaring about the suffering and slow death a slashed leg might create. The ox torturer should STILL be in jail for what HE did.

a 10 lb fish is just 3000 calories and if you're out in the wind, dampness and cold all day, getting that fish, you need to eat 4000 calories per day. The reality, guys, is that contestants lose 1.3 bs per day out there, even when they still have bodyfat, if they are hunting/fishing all day. if they just hole-up in their shelter.hey lose just 3000 calories (ie, one lb of body weight) per day. Saving 1000 calories, 1/3rd lb of body weight per day means a LOT over an 60 day period. 20 lbs. If you're being really careless about your calorie-losses, as Biko was, you can lose 2 lbs per day, ,especially once you've lost all of your body fat. I suspect that producers wont allow anyone else to do what Juan did, since it makes for such boring TV to watch somebody just lie around in their sleeping bag.

when a given set of items and tactics ALWAYS fail, WHY handicap yourself with them, eh? without barbed hooks and organic bait, you have no chance at all of taking enough fish to gain back the calories you spend trying to do so. Not in the Arctic circle, in the late fall. You need barbed treblehooks and pieces of mice, bugs, fish so you can set baited trotlines and then go do something else, not stand there in the cold, dampness and wind. A grouse is 200 calories, so it's not worth hunting, ditto 400 calorie squirrels or 700 calorie hares. It MIGHT be worth setting out some box traps for such critters, once you've got lots of netting made, Predators can't get at your catch as easily in a box traps as they can when snared, unless your spring=pole snare has the animal WAY up in the air. I'd definitely not bother to snare game that I didn't lift 6 ft off of the ground with a spring-pole. I'd try to use the netting-wrapped box trap on crabs first, too. Then birds.. Birds are easily baited into a ladder trap, and such a trap can catch many birds without any need for resetting. A net bottom, set above the REAL bottom by 1" lets the bird SEE (and peck at) the bait, but they can't actually GET any of it. As bait, use salted boiled, then fried bits of dried fish guts/heads, cambium, seeds, berries, bits of your GORP. Dont bother setting traps where you dont normally walk in a day. The catches are not worth the extra footsteps (twice per day) and your scent-activity will tend to keep away predators. If you'll make small brush piles in open areas, you'll catch more rabbits in traps set near those piles. Rabbits are very much afraid of hawks, owls and eagles, foxes, etc. Therefore, if you offer them some points of cover, you'll have more hares to trap.
