I was on the edge of my seat the whole time! Two things with your Dad; start trail ride prayer was great and seeing how much he obviously was concerned for you at the truck was heartwarming. That ages old saying about your children always being your kids no matter what age they may be was clearly and positively displayed by your Dad. Another thought, it takes a very Big Man to admit his mistakes and not blame his horse!

I totally agree with you Rick! Thank God for a praying 🙏 dad!! I was so glad to hear him pray for you...his son! Wow!! I was on pins and needles watching you...and hoping that you'd find Caliber...but didn't know what you might would do. Riding him sounded impossible with your bad rib. ..and how you would you hold on to him with the reins?? I was thinking about what it would have been like before cellphones also! I'd hate to think. If it wasn't for the prayer of protection before hand maybe you would have been hurt worse! I'm so glad you are OK and I'm sure your wife is too!! I love watching your videos. To be fair, a true outdoorsman would have had more on him personally to be prepared for the situation. The start of the video the two things that stood out were no face/ear coverings and pretty thin gloves for 2 degrees. I can’t see skin lasting long if this is all true.

I think our age plays a part in why sometimes we don’t stick with the buck, and bail instead. When I was younger they called me flea because I stuck to any horses back. After 40 I had my first bail…and I literally did it on purpose thinking I would get through it quicker. Broken ribs are no joke. I’m working with a reactive 5yo mare right now. Every time I throw my leg over, I pray she has a good day. And I pray I don’t make any mistakes. We are all just human first. Thank you for being “real”.

I reminded him that I trail ride in the LBJ National Grasslands here in Texas. Granted, I’m never by myself, but you don’t ever know what might happen. I'm 65 and height challenged, so getting back on my horse after getting off without some sort of help would be impossible. She’s been used for lessons for years and really takes care of her rider, but you never can be 100% sure of their reactions. Thanks for sharing your wreck to help educate others and here's a horse trainers perspective on the situation. "as soon as he panicked and tried to go forward, I pulled him backwards." Once your initial que of stop was no longer working, that's where you ran into problems with the control part of things. Pulling back to keep them from going forward and backing "loads the spring" as we like to call it and is not something we do with younger horses to start out with. Pulling back and/or backing loads the spring which is to say, It puts their body in a state where they are in perfect athletic position to bolt and/or buck. For the first couple of rides, we don't even pull back on the reins to stop, we pull their heads around into a circle and wait for them to slow to a stop. Forward movement is your friend. Especially with younger horses, and like you mentioned, no forward movement is hard for them mentally because they want to run or buck when they get overwhelmed. Stopping them from going forward is pretty hard, especially the more uncomfortable they get. The first response once pulling back on the reins isn't working, should be to pull the horses head out WIDE (not close to your body) to not stop that forward motion but direct it into a circle while disengaging the hind quarters, which naturally happens in a turn. Horses can't really buck or bolt well when they are disengaging their hind quarters and once they can release that forward energy you are directing, they can mentally recover themselves and you release them once they stop moving. It's a bit of an e-brake so to speak and it's built into our foundation so that it's always where you go back to if things get bad. Now in the wilderness, you don't always have the space to do that sort of maneuver but at that point, you shouldn't be taking a young horse that you don't trust and might have problems like that where they shouldn't yet be.

Your video hit close to home for me as you were describing the pain and feeling. 7 weeks ago I had a wreck under very similar conditions with a young horse and I knew better than to trust him but got over confident and I guess lazy. I also know better spent a lot of time in the back country pulling pack string and moving cows in my life and I am closer to your dad's age. Your observations at the end are 100 percent correct. I ended up breaking 4 ribs and one in two places put a hole in a lung not a good feeling when you start coughing up blood. 4 days in the hospital. I am doing good other than laying down slept in my recliner until just a couple of days ago. Going to wait a couple more weeks to get on a horse and it will spend some serious time in the round corral before I step up. God bless get healed up and Merry Christmas.

Man, that pain is something I do not wish on anyone. Glad you made it back. As bad as the situation was, you seriously lucked out. My dad was bucked off a horse over 10 years ago and it destroyed him, he is still seriously disabled from it. I was thinking that it was both a blessing and a curse that the snow was not deeper. If it was deeper, you may have not been hurt, but it would have made walking a much bigger challenge. The cold also probably helped a lot with reducing the swelling and made it a bit easier for you to make it back. When I saw the horse get off the ice into the snow, I was quite impressed by the intelligence of that move, but it also shows he still has a mind of his own which is not always the best thing when riding. And when he went back towards where you started out from, it shows he was thinking about it and not just mindlessly running around. If you can work with him a lot more, he will be a great riding horse that could potentially save your life one day if he is trained right.

Thank goodness for having a really good set of hiking poles and a cousin to carry my pack.

I liked all you said, especially staying on the horse being safer than bailing. So sorry for your injuries but love the videos of a rancher’s life in Montana. We live in Washington state and our old mare was 13 when we got her and she was a roller. But thankfully my kids never had her roll with them. She would just stop if they fell off. She was trained to barrel race and I am not a barrel racer! Again, love your videos. 😊

Well, live and learn. You are a very good educator! In a lot of situations it’s best not to ride alone. Thank goodness it turned out the way it did, and you could manage it well enough to make it an educational video. Even though in the beginning I knew that it turned out OK, I still was worrying all the way through it like it was in real time. Instinctively assessing your condition as you were walking. I’ve come off a time or two and broke ribs. Unbelievable how bad they hurt! Nothing seems worse. I’m so glad it turned out like it did. I hear the weather is going to be coming down hard on you guys up north. Worst storm in decades. Cold and windy is hard on the animals. Stay safe. Merry Christmas and prosperous next year. A horse's power is something that has surprised me on a few occasions. Once, on a hunting trip in the Bob, I had a horse named Ivan who would simply lie down in the snow when he got too hot. Another time, we were side hilling off trail and came upon some slab rocks while it was raining. Well, old Ivan slipped, not surprisingly, and luckily I was prepared when he went down and I was able to get my foot out of the stirrup in time. Luckily, we weren't hurt and he popped right up and we walked across the chute to the trail. I'm thankful you weren't hurt worse because you would have been facing a rescue situation. Rib injuries are a bitch because all you can do is wrap your chest and grin and bare the pain. I cracked a rib in football once and it took weeks to heal. Good thoughts to you on your recovery. I really enjoy your posts and your lifestyle. You adroitly portray the unique aspects of ranching and cowboying. Can't wait for the 500k subscribers post!

I recently had a similar experience with my 12 year old palomino mare. I was out for a short trial ride, in an unfamiliar place. From the time I unloaded, saddled, and mounted my mare, she was telling me she was uneasy. It is so clear now as I reflect back on this event. Long story short, something jumped out of the tall grass and spooked her. She jumped, I had a good hold on the saddle, but all my weight shifted the saddle and she went to bucking. I was riding her out trying to decide to jump off or stay with her. She made that decision for me. Four fractured ribs, a helicopter ride to the hospital and I am still going to rehab. I was in the hospital for 2 weeks and pretty much in bed for another 4 weeks... We should talk!!! I have always wanted to visit Montana. Praying for you and your family.....

Just finished watching. One thing you did VERY right that a ton of people get completely wrong is you had your emergency beacon on you, NOT on the horse or the saddle or in a saddle bag etc. So, give yourself kudos there for sure. I can't tell you the number of times I have seen people hang their only way of making emergency contact in an accident somewhere on their horse. I have noticed with that horse in your past videos, he doesn't know how to release anxiety well by focusing on his rider, he wears it pretty well but you can see it build on some of your past videos and when he finally releases it, he spooks. Unfortunately in this case you blocked his spook and he blew up, which you covered in the after action report in this video. A really good thing is that when you blocked him he bucked instead of going over backward and coming down on top of you so there is a LOT to be thankful for in the midst of all of this. It could have been so much worse but you did enough right that we are watching this video instead of reading an obituary or finding out from the news that you are in a coma in the hospital. the Lord definitely had his angels watching over you that day, that's for sure. Do you ride with a night latch? If not I highly recommend always using one, green horse or not and making sure you have it in your hand before you swing up. I hate internet "experts" so I'll leave it at that, but if you want suggestions on a way to turn around that horses behavior so he learns to release anxiety in a more positive way I would be happy to help you out. I'm over near Plains, MT and I will be sincerely praying for you for a speedy recovery.

Unless a person has ever fractured or broken a rib there is no way to grasp just how painful breathing can be in that situation. I’ve always wondered how football players simply get taped up and return to play. I fractured two ribs as a young woman in a car accident when someone ran my boyfriend and I off the road into a telephone pole. This experience reminds not only yourself but all of us that rushing to do ANYTHING often results in compromised consequences. It was obviously WICKED painful. For myself, I couldn’t help but be frightened for you wondering how you might get home under these circumstances. SO relieved it all concluded as it did. Thank you for sharing your thought process and want you to know that I am deeply grateful you are home safe with your wife and children. They all need you more than any of you may realize.

So sorry that this happened to you, but as you said, horses have a mind of their own and sometimes you have to deal with those thoughts. I can relate to your pain. I had a horse tied up in the barn while grooming him. A cat jumped on his back while I was at the hindquarters. My horse kicked out, I went flying through the air, hit a stall door and slammed to the ground. I broke a rib and was all alone at the barn that day. I didn't want to leave my horse at that moment so took him into the arena and did groundwork, then left for the hospital. Do take it easy and I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Aloha Trinity 🤙 Thanks for the painfull video! I was a search and rescue swimmer in the Navy. While jumping out at night for a rescue there were some pretty big swells. A 30 foot hover is ideal height, a 3 second fall until you hit water. Well I happened to jump into a trough of the wave. You hold your mask on your head with one hand and strobe light that's on your shoulder with the other. Well I did my normal count while jumping and it was like 6 seconds not 3😁. So I was a good 50 + feet above the water. Yes it hurt! I broke 3 ribs. I finished the rescue,1 pilot and got back in the helo and the adrenaline wore off and when we got back to ship I needed help to walk to medical. It was like 6 weeks before I was able to go back to work. I felt your pain when you were walking down. Owe! Cowboy 🤠up! LOL! I'm 60 now and you would of had to call in a chopper for my butt! So glad it turned out okay. It could of been alot worse. God bless and have a Merry Christmas! Be safe! Mahalo 🤙

Horse was fresh and I didn’t lunge him before I got on. I learned from my lesson not to get in a damn hurry. Not the horses fault!! All mine!! Broke the same rib in the back under the shoulder blade. Miserable for months!! Had to sleep in the recliner for weeks. I feel your pain!! The crappy thing is, at my age as the only hired hand on a 40k acre ranch, I couldn’t miss work and I was miserable. Even worse as I have to measure future risk vs reward and may just have to transition to 4 wheeler. It’s killin me!!!

I've had broken, bruised & cracked ribs at different times on both sides. I kept holding my breath in reflex for you the whole time you were walking back. It's a feeling you never quite get beyond. Just like the ribs don't really ever seem to be 'HEALED' no matter how much time has gone by. If you sleep laying wrong, bend sideways wrong, stretch just 'RIGHT' = 'WRONG' - you know it instantly! Of all the different ways to SCREWUP your ribs, I feel, at least in my case cracked ribs seem to hurt more, hurt longer, seem to never really be healed no matter how long it's been. Either way, my sympathies for you & hope you mend up quickly. Don't know what your Dad says to you but mine always said: '... get your butt back up in that saddle. You can't make any money with your butt on the ground.'
