Eh... Not really. I mean my great grandparents talked like that, we made jokes about it. Asking great grandmother if she wanted us to meet her at "Chic-a-fils" but I was none the less born and raised Southern and I say all those names correctly. I also refer to soda generically as soda, but also rarely generically cause I'll just call it by brand. I've never met someone under the age of like 70 that REALLY did this stuff anymore, and I think the existence of search engines is a major factor in that as it sorta forces you to use less local only nomenclature

Shortly after my wife & I married (she, from Arkansas & I, from California), we visited her parents. I found a book at their house about how to speak Southern or something like that; I figured it was a joke & thumbed through it, chuckling as I read the various terms. One that stuck out was "bub", as in a "light bub". Again, I thought it was a joke & let it go... ...until my father-in-law walked into the room, looking for a "bub". Apparently, the book wasn't a joke book; it was a translation guide.

I want to read that. My moms father is from Illinois but my dads family are all from Texas or Appalachia. Once we were working outside making piles of wood we had chopped. My Yank grandpa (who was raised in an Orthodox Jewish home by a couple who escaped the Holocaust) was trying to help. He asked where he laid his gloves down (he couldn’t find them. My brother Ranger told him that he “thought he saw them catywampus to the pack that was sigoggling”. My grandpa stood there looking at him like he was an alien. That night told my mom (jokingly, I think) that not only could she not give her children proper names but we don’t even speak English. My mom objected (jokingly) and my grandpa pointed to my sister Meadow saying “she’s named after a field of grass”, pointing to my brother Canyon said “he’s named after a prehistoric geological land formation”, pointed to Colt and said “this one after a young male horse” and pointed to Ranger saying “this one is named after an armed law enforcement officer” (his full name is Ranger Blade). He then said, why couldn’t you given them normal names like Rueben, Zalman, Elimeloch, Levi, Dovid, Ester, Mordechai or Hymen”. At which point Ranger makes the ASL for a part of a girls anatomy and begins to protest, my dad points to him and said “My belt loops are about to start crackling” (an idle threat, usually). My grandpa then said the entire house was nuts. I mean, he loves us but whenever he visits and leaves he says “back to civilization!”. I do not live in the hills and hollers. I live in East Texas. I just figure to him, it must seem like a different country.

@@WyattRyeSway You are right, my comment was strong. However, I tried other Southern Things videos but could not finish them. After a little of that I stopped watching them. In my view Matt was the star of that channel and in his video he talks about the five years he spent with them. The Pandemic was particularly hard on Southern Things content creators. They re-played existing videos while the creators received no residuals. Their right of course, as they “owned” the content, but an operation that small risks losing big if contributors are not looked after. Matt was kind in his comments but it was easy to see that there were considerable underlying issues. Just watching Matt create content for his own channel is very instructive. His output exceeds Southern Things and is broader in scope without the former oversight. I just don’t see Southern Things filling this void. We should follow their subscriber numbers. Lastly, I will look for his explanation video and a link.

I was just confused the first time I saw one that didn't have two names. I grew up with Belk-Lindsey, and moved to a place where it was Parks Belk. Just "Belk" sounds all kinds of wrong. (Even my phone thinks that's gotta be wrong. It "corrected" my spelling.)

Excellent Matt. I've actually crawled over boxes to get from one end of an aisle to the other at DG. DG in Louisiana sells beer, wine, and cigarettes. So convenient being able to buy three food groups at the same time, all at the same store.
@wpeale71341
@wpeale71341 Жыл бұрын
Why? I live in Louisiana. Every DG I have ever been in had access to both ends of the aisles from an aisle running cross ways across the store. You might have to climb the boxes to get something hiding on the shelf behind them but you can get to every aisle. But hey if its an issue just drive a mile and a half further down the highway and go to another DG. There is like 10 in every parish.

Important note: it isn’t “Belks” but “Belk’s” when we don’t call it Belk. Why? Because the department store was historically shopped by upper crust Southern families, who considered the store not simply as a brand department store, but the store owned by the Belk family. As the debutante culture is still alive and well in the South, many families still hold that same conception or have inherited it, and it has spread across the Southern lexicon. This, if you need a nice pair of formal shoes for your ball or gala anywhere South of the Mason-Dixon line, you’re going to “Belk’s.”

Back in the day when I was growing up in KY, we went to Parks-Belk and McNeal & Edwards. These 2 were in Clarksville and not very fancy. Nashville was big time: In order of fanciness from bottom to top: Harvey's, Castner-Knott, Cain-Sloan, and the creme de la creme Rich-Schwartz.(which was the fanciest store in Nashville - it was the Neiman's of Middle Tennessee) That would have been the Debutante store for certain!

Even in Monroe, North Carolina where the first store was established, people call it Belk's. Also in the Waxhaw area where the Belk family is from, even though Waxhaw itself is too small to have its own Belk's (though it did briefly have a store in the early 1900s). Before my family moved to the Waxhaw area when I was a kid I lived in Charlottesville where we had Leggett's. It's the same chain, but Belk's had a unique franchising model by which various franchisees established their own sub-chains with their own names, but using the Belk's back end and supply chain. This led to a number of curiosities, including I recall a Belk-Leggett's near the Virginia-North Carolina border - I'm thinking maybe Danville but it's been a long time so I can't recall for certain.

Oh lord, my mom (originally from New York) would get on me (born in North Carolina) about how I would say words. K-Mart was K-Mark, for example. It would also drive her crazy that I say A-lanta or A-lantic instead of AT-lanta or AT-lantic or that I have a habit of dropping 'th' in words: Nor' Carolina or ba'room instead of bathroom. And yes, McDonald's is always Mickey D's.
