I enjoy your videos very much. Thank you for taking the time to make them. I really gain quite a bit of knowledge from you. I had visited 'alpaca's of Oregon' for mothers day this year and absolutely fell in love. I now dream of having my own some day, so your video's have been super helpful to educate me before taking the plunge! Thank you

Love those guys & even though alpacas/llamas (and many others). are a part of the fiber world these days I never new anything about the alpacas till your vids came along. You're doing such a good job. Hope your store is coming along well & keep up all the good work you do also agriculturally/politically etc.

Hi, Tashia! Thanks for another interesting podcast. Quick question - does it ever happen that an alpaca doesn't ever integrate successfully with the rest of the group? Do you then have to find a new home for him her? Just wondering...! Thanks again for your podcasts, I look forward to seeing them pop up!!!
@ButterfieldAlpacaRanch

It can happen. It might just be a matter of creating smaller groups to change the herd dynamics where everyone finds their place. Sometimes it doesn’t work out and you need to re-home them. It’s just a matter of finding the right environment for some.

another question how do you get water out there where it is remote??
@ButterfieldAlpacaRanch

Water has been plumbed from the well to the boys barn. There is a hydrant next to the barn.

@@ButterfieldAlpacaRanchThank you! always wondered in your case you were lucky to have it there or place your barn near one. LOL In the video I saw later a lake and they were drinking but clean water on a hot day is what I'd want.

Just wondering what would happen if you tried to intervene during their fights?
@ButterfieldAlpacaRanch
@ButterfieldAlpacaRanch 5 жыл бұрын
I would not physically get in between them to break up a fight. You are bound to get hurt! There is a hierarchy of the herd and this is one of the primary ways that they figure out the social order. There have been times that I've sprayed them down with a hose to interfere but they are just going to do it again later when I'm not around. If they are equally matched alpacas, let them work it out. Be sure to have their fighting teeth trimmed to minimize damage to one another. If you have a male that is not able to stand up for himself, either because of size or nature of personality, separate him from the instigator.

Do they ever hurt each other?
@ButterfieldAlpacaRanch
@ButterfieldAlpacaRanch 6 жыл бұрын
They can. Boys have pointy teeth in the back of their upper jaw that we call fighting teeth. Those can do a lot of damage so we trim the tip off to make them blunt. I haven’t had issues with injuries from fighting or playing among my herd.

Not a reply just a question for you, do you think that alpacas make good guide animals as they have soft feet,so,thay would be able to go inside?maybe get them booties for when atwork4,guiding please let me know if I would be able to get one fora guideand I don’t mind that that smell like popcorn. Vanessa

@ButterfieldAlpacaRanch 4 жыл бұрын
I don’t know that they would be good as guide animals. I’ve never heard of alpacas being used in that way. That job usually requires that they bond to you and that’s not a good situation with alpacas. Plus, they’d just want to eat all the time 😆

@@ButterfieldAlpacaRanch So the girls don't have those "fighting teeth"? Never heard of that! I'm watching all your videos learning about alpacas as I hope to get my own next year. You have a wealth of information. Thanks for sharing!

👍👍 Some girls do but, in general, no. All males do and will hurt each other with them. Girls don’t fight like the boys do. At least, not mine
