This got me wondering will some nuclei that we consider stable will eventually alpha decay but have a very very long half life? is there always a non zero probability that the barrier will be overcome? Or is there something different about stable nuclei that prevents an alpha particle from forming in the first place?

If there is a energy uncertainty, why do u know it will spend 68.9 year to decay but not 1 year or 10 year? If uncertainty principle is effective, the decay should happen at any time i think.
@sonyexperia77376 жыл бұрын
It does happen at any time -for one atom. But the probability of it happening is fixed. When you have a lump of this radioactive matter (quite a lot of atoms), half of it has decayed in 68.9 years. Richard Feynman has some mind blowing lectures about probability in physics, though not in direct relation to radioactivity. The entire everything turned out to be the sum of probabilities. 42.
