There's actually a short story from the White Dwarf of August 2019 where Guardsmen are fighting Tyranids and get annihilated, only for Space Marines to appear in scaly, azure blue armor. They help the Guardsmen who are enthralled by them and are grateful. The marine then says 'For the Emperor' :)

The best way to explain the alpha legion is as such: Half of the alpha legion is loyalist well the other half of the alpha legion is chaos but no one in the legion knows witch half is witch

I always thought that the Alpha Legion were not double-agents, but *triple-agents*, a false flag twice over. All of the Primarchs had/have an implied purpose in their design, after all, and one struggles to pin down that of Alpharius/Omegon... the Legions already had weapons of terror, confusion, infiltration and subversion. So what, then, can be the point of the Legion who embody all of these things alongside impenetrable mystery? Allow me to propose a hypothesis; the Alpha Legion and their twin Primarchs are, in fact, a *contingency plan*, a sort of "dead man's switch" against the exact sort of no-win scenario that the Imperium has found itself in. An unknowable and borderline-unstoppable force who nevertheless do not conquer or destroy as much as they subvert and mold, their ultimate purpose being to save the Imperium from itself from the outside. When the time eventually comes, I tentatively believe that the Alpha Legion will throw aside all their masks and activate every asset they've sown and cultivated on both sides of the conflict, then to finally help the Emperor truly die and enact a grand plan to deny both destinies presented by the Cabal. To find the Third Way. The Emperor Protects, Hydra Dominatus.

@@JD-jr8nq Aaah, the First! They're my pick as well. Alpha Legion are in my top five, but Lion's Angels are still top of the pile as far as I'm concerned. With the Fallen in mind, Lord Cypher's movements have a certain... Alpharius-ness about them, don't you think? I'm not suggesting that Cypher is/was one of the Twins in disguise, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if there's some sort of conspiracy or connection going on there between the Fallen and the Hydra.

I'll always love the Alpha legion because they feel like one of the least outlandish factions in 40k, they don't care about honor or glory, just brutal efficiency and misdirection of enemy forces, they fight not just to win a battle but the whole war at the same time, they don't truly follow chaos but nor do they follow the ideals of the Imperium. They will always be my favorite group in Warhammer and I like the approach that GW and their writers took to depict the faction as well as they have, we're not meant to understand their endgame because they play it so close to the chest. My favorite legion is Alpha Legion because everyone can see them as they like. Traitor, loyalist, neither or both. They are doing there one thing, but not one thing is similar to other. They are separated and united, one and many. They bring ordered chaos and bring chaos for order. And I think they do this for the war, so that it will never end, to never see both professes. That's why in Horus heresy they helped both loyalist and traitors. Hydra Dominatus brothers.

If you look at it from another perspective what would be the most eficient way to act for the Alpha Legion, divide the Legion each and every splinter beliving that they are the true Alpha Legion each one working for a diferent purpose but when combined like the pieces of a puzzle they make a complete image an image that only Alpharius or Omegon can assemble and see, an end to their and their Legion long work.

Hearing about operatives of the Alpha Legion, how they might have hidden talents and accomplishments they do not recall... it reminds me of a TV show called Dollhouse. For those unaware, Dollhouse revolves around an organization capable of taking memories and skills from a person and putting them into another person's body - even combining them to form entirely artificial personas, with any personality or skillset the organization might desire. What if that's what the Alpha Legion can do, either through arcane technology or some quirk of Alpharius' gene-sons? Consider, the Alpha Legion's use of sleeper agents, able to fool even themselves. Consider also that it's said that an Alpha Legionnaire can take on any roll required, equally adept as a infantryman or a vehicle driver, as a Raptor or a Havoc, even able to assume command should their leader fall - like a hydra growing a new head. No army could possibly have so many people with such a diverse array of talents... unless they were able to somehow share memories and skills. On the one hand, it's terrifying. As an Alpha Legionnaire, or even one of their agents, who you are can be overwritten, your deeds forgotten, and you can be turned into whatever the Legion wishes you to be. But on the other hand... your own talents and memories added to the pool, never to be forgotten. And in a sense, you can never truly die. The bodies of human and Astartes alike are nothing but shells - should a skilled pilot or renowned champion fall, he may rise again in the body of another Legionnaire, ready to continue the fight. Who you are becomes unimportant - but at the same time, you become the Legion itself, part of an insidious, but magnificent whole. You are Alpharius, and Alpharius is you.

I've thought about that too since the book came out. I mean, of course all Imperial Fists players agree with Dorn and think Alpharius is dead. But they underestimate the ability to create pseudo-primarchs from the perfectly trained sacrifice. Dorn mentions that he felt his brothers death. But did he? Or did he feel only the trickling wave of a "primarchs" death in the flushing wake of validation in conviction in the face of.. "killing Loki, the traitor, once and for all"..?

I took public speaking and all the writing courses I could when I was in college; narration and proofreading are fun for me and I have to say: You are Great at what you do. For my money, their armor, colors, and imagery have the most aesthetic appeal of any Legion, loyal or traitor. I have always loved that shade, like bronze oxidation. It's very 70's, earth-tones and turquoise were big back then. May sound weird but, every time I see the XXth, I think of album covers from 70's Prog Rock bands. Thank you Baldermort!

Thanks for covering my favourite faction in all of 40k, their mystique is what draws so many to them. The people who say that the Alpha Legion are contrived are, I think, exactly right and that is what makes the 20th legion so great indeed. The alpha legion are so artificial, their methods so unrealistic, that one has to consider every possibility, even Occam's Razor: that the Alpha Legion are all smoke and mirrors. If you have read Dan Abnett's Inquisitor novels, then I'm sure you'll understand my excitement to see the next installment... Hydra Dominatus. Only one critique with this video and it's the missed opportunity that was: "Welcome gentle listener, I am Alpharius..."

Alas, I think GW actually encourage tribalism, but they do not realise sometimes how this can go waaay further than they intend and become venomous. Sigh. I think Legion wide end goals don't exist for the XXth. Obsessive compartmentalization, instances of the Primarchs appearing to undertake independent initiatives, and the loss of one or both Primarchs would leave the organization without central focus. Cell structures work for terrorists because the larger ideological goals aren't secrets. I think the Alpha Legion is fractured into traitor, loyalist, and renegade cells. Their secrecy, duplicity, and obedience are so ingrained that most of them may not recognize a lack of unified purpose upon encountering another cell.

Definitely my favourite Legion, always bought into the third Primarch but had never considered the third head representing a third way 🤯 That's what I love about Alpha, they make your head fall off at every turn hahaha. Not sure if they're still at it in the current Dark Imperium era but found it really interesting they were happy for none Astartes to identify as being part of the Legion, respecting their roles and achievements during The Heresy, in many ways the most inclusive Legion as they're not Great Protectors like The Salamanders or simply see mankind as servants like The Dark Angels (or chattle like World Eaters) they respect humans as humans can do what Alpharius can't sometimes. The confusion between Alpharius and Omegon being Giants like other Primarchs or the size of a Marine can be explained with a simple, both. The Emperor himself has been known to appear both as towering even above the Primarchs and appearing as a regular human. Perhaps Alpharius and Omegon have this ability as well. Either by actual transformation or altering the perception of others.

Ok , This is weird. Watching this presentation I was put in mind of a book I read years ago, maybe decades ago now. I was set in the 40 K universe and dealt with the adventures of an imperial inquisitor during his investigation into a conspiracy surrounding a mysterious ''hydra''. This investigation took him and his companions deep into the eye of terror itself. The Hydra , as I remember (dimly , ever so very dimly ) , turned out to be a translucent substance or creature or something , not of this world . Instead it was half of the warp and half of this world , a third way if you will . The threat , or promise , was that , once released and given enough time , it would spread into the mind of all living men., rendering each vulnerable to psychic possession. The story ended with an audience with the emperor himself, or part of his mind, in the throne room of holy terra. It turned out that the emperor had long been schizophrenic . If I remember rightly , the whole thing was a scheme of the emperor, hidden even from himself. That's about all I remember . I don't remember any mention of the Alpha legion but the number of bells ringing in my head suggest to me that this may have been the germ of the story or legend. i wish I could remember the title. Does anyone else remember the book or story ? Maybe a bit better than I do ?

Seems to me as though they're more likely agents of the Emperor, rather than devotees of Chaos. Their tendencies aren't those of chaos undivided: decay, sensation and bloodshed don't typify them. That only leaves change, Tzeentch, who is renowned for mutations of form.

Ah my favourite traitor legion, what can be said about them that draws me in. Their colour scheme and armor is cool and sleek, their animal iconography is iconic, their tactics are amazing, and the uncertainty behind how truly loyalist or traitor they really are is always nice to have. The best thing about them is you can play them as both loyal and traitor that way if you're friends want to be either traitor or loyalist, you can play with them as either foe or friend.

The novel I read, covered a lot about how they operate, but left me with so many questions that, due to the way the operate, I don't think we'll ever know unless GW allows it.
