Lusting for a gx9 successor from Panasonic. m43 sensor would mean less overheating, space for an evf, popup flash, mechanical shutter and most importantly, awesome compact lenses portfolio. The S9 just doesn't make sense to me. The compactness is lost as soon as you attach a full frame lens to it.

The price is high for what it is knowing the recording caps are so low. Same time the color you got has almost sold me. I'd probably buy it if I held one though. The app excites me as ive barely had luck with Cannon or sony. Same time those apps worked once but as they get updated or don't they break I'm sure lumix app will be the same way. Price for a kit to sell for me should be 1500 not near 2k mark. It's just not there for what it is

"Professional features for non-professional cameras." This is probably the most appropriate statement for this camera I've heard since it's been announced. The grippers which are professionals and enthusiasts aspiring to be pros or wanna be pros are the ones gripping the most about the legit crippled features. But if we could reframe this as a consumer camera rather than the perfect camera, these crippled specs don't matter as much! As a photo enthusiast, tho, I hope they come out with a compact version that does have at least a small evf, mech shutter, and a hot shoe. As a Lumix shooter, we shouldn't have to be forced into the A7C line or Leica for a compact full frame body that suits our WANTS. I would happily pay more for the aforementioned specs.

All my pro cameras over the years have been Panasonic. Yes the record limit sucks, but unless I am streaming an event I never shoot that long. So maybe this is my next camera? Open gate is awesome, price affordable, never use a hot shoe anymore, and I hade grading so the LUT feature is fire. Great meeting you BTW at NAB.

I agree with all your points as professional a content creator. I'd definitely pick up a S9 as a b-cam. Why? Well the ibis, it's not brilliant on my A7R5, plus the size. I do a lot of short on the spot interviews, and I'd like something a bit less intimidating. The price is to high, but that will come down. I'm happy at £1000 and £500 for a lens. There is zoom coming out for it, but it's a bit dark at 40mm at f6.3.

7:15 - THIS!!! THIS IS THE OPINION THAT I WAS EXPECTING FROM Y'ALL REVIEWERS!!! DANG! I mean, it's simple! It's NOT made for pro photographers/videographers. It's NOT the S9's intended demography of audience. It's for content creators TRANSITIONING from smartphone-level production who wants to step up their production quality EASIER, exactly like what Panasonic intended. OF COURSE it has big smartphone-friendly features, OF COURSE it remove features that made a professional camera a professional camera. But the fact that Panasonic nailed this camera for it's intended use & audience, simplifying the S5 Mark II while STILL have the option to unlock MOST of the professional features that the pro-lines, and the fact that they CAN maximize it further with those facts earlier, AND THAT PRICETAG that rivals current top-line APS-C cameras, this could be Panasonic's most important camera in Lumix's history in a long time, and yes it's NOT a perfect camera. I'm a Sony user, and I WISH the ZV-E1 were treated like this. What's wrong with having fun as a content creator? The S9 is a lot more fun than many of my Sony gears, and I think that's what the purpose of this camera; to make photo & video-taking fun again. And that's okay.

I’m a long time Panasonic LUMIX Micro 4/3 user and still on the fence to jump to LUMIX full frame (I did leave Canon full frame for Lumix years ago for what I did for photo/video). After watching this it makes sense to use it for content creation and not expect all the pro features that so many professionals make look for. Looks like a good content creating machine for everyday use. I want to try one even more now 🙌

It's a "it depends". If you want to shoot in raw but also want to post to to social media without and post production then it's a big deal.

Yeah, when I know I’m shooting for KZbin we usually shoot in LOG. It’s the stuff I want quickly for social media or for personal stuff that I slap a lut on. Makes life easy.

Many Thai KZbinrs who came to Japan also said that they liked S9 when using it more than when it was showed in the paper. They said that it might be a reason why they were all invited to Japan for forcing to use it; not just looking at it for only the specification. However, many of them also accepted that they will use it more for travel / relaxed activities; not for professional works. Lastly, many Thai youtuber who came to Japan mentioned that they did not get any money for reviewing S9; just plane ticket, hotel, transportstion, and some meals. I think the problem with S9 is professional photo / video takers expected it to be more for them. They criticized many negative points without thinking that non-pro users use it or not. Currently, I use GX85 and I really interested in S9. I took video with GX85 that has no jacks for microphone and headphones. I never use EVF. I never do color grading coz I'm too lazy to record it in that white tone to color it later. As a fans who take video of idol / actress from an event, I look for a camera that can help me post 4K video clips of idol as fast as possible (That's why I like 4K Lite) and that camera must have a good stabilisation since using high camera stand or gimbal is too obvious and might not be used in many public locations.

I just think it was an unfortunate launch for a pretty solid camera.The lens options that it launched with really didn't match the camera, all of the press controversy, and some of the missing features combined to something that didn't look all that appealing. It's sad because I think all of that distracted people from what this camera actually offers.

G100 was released in such a mess, its a good b cam with log option and a good 4k/fhd capture that doesnt overheat, but the marketing . . It was not a vlog cam, but they had the bright idea to market it as such

@@victorsaavedra6595 g100 is such a good b cam, clear fhd , decent 4k , v-log for grading , small as heck and a decent pre-amp. Keep it and maybe buy another lumix cam to compliment it.

Fuji’s H2S has 6.2K Opengate and more options regarding ProRes/RAW. It’s APS-C but in video, meh, doesn’t matter. I own the H2S and Lumix S5IIX.. Lumix has better focus, and markers are great.. but the Fuji is def no slouch.

Panasonic was doing some really cool stuff with the Lumix series back almost 20 years ago with some of their "bridge" cameras.. Had most of the same features you'd get in a DSLR, along with these really nice, versatile Leica lenses built in. So it was essentially a DSLR without the ability to change the lens, but the lens was good enough with an insane optical range, if you needed something better you probably should have gone with a DSLR in the first place. Was back when your options were DSLR, something like the Lumix FZ28 "bridge" cameras, or one of the borderline useless pocket cameras that would soon get replaced with smartphones LOL. SORRY.. not trying to give a full on history lesson, just really cool to see Lumix bringing new/fresh takes on things again.

The biggest complaint about the "open gate", which I think is not reallty open gate, is the crop. So it's not 1 to 1 to if you shoot 4k. But it can still be helpful if you can take that into account.

The S5ii, S5iix, and the S9 all do 6k open gate with no crop. The S9 also has a new 3.8k open gate that also uses the entire sensor (no crop)

The baseplate is from SmallRig. The strap is my own frankenstein'd creation from a Peak Design micro clutch and part of the included camera strap.

A ton of folks that have bigger budgets then the Average Consumers always behaving as if certain cameras are only good for non professional use. Well clearly those Bigger Budgets folks mostly aren't Pros. Also, the real Definition of what is or isn't a PRO is blurred. I doubt so called Pros even really know what Professional means concerning Cameras.

But why are professional thinking 6k is only for them? People really misunderstood the demographic for this camera! GenZ understands how technology works maybe faster than all those Pro KZbinrs from the SLR and DSLR era. And their muscle memories are routed in that era. As you so rightly mentioned 6K Open Gate remove the necessity to think in advance about vertical or horizontal delivery, and this is why this feature is there on that camera. Why should all new camera be for professional or me with my specific needs? If that was the case all camera would have been identical in features. This camera has been design for a specific demographic with specific needs which are not the pro KZbinrs in the Photo/Videos niche. This whole drama revealed the biases and how closed minded many of those so called pro KZbinrs in this niche are! And this is unfortunate.

It should work with a dummy battery, but it won't give you unlimited recording. The recording limit is there because the sensor overheats when recording 4K or over. IIRC, some of the older models can do unlimited recording.

Fujifilm has open gate but they are APSC and its only in like 2 cameras which sucks. Might have to give lumix a go.

I guess the biggest question I have left with this camera is how is the heat dissipation? Would my Sony? I can't record more than about 15-20 minutes before it starts. Overheating

Gordon Laing tested overheating and compared with a Sony ZVE1. The Lumix lasted about 50% longer. If you want a camera that doesn't overheat ever, get the S5ii over this. If is only $300 more new and should be slightly cheaper used.

I wouldn't say at all, that 2000 bucks is a beginner price... sure, there are much more expensive cameras with much more pro stuff out there, but for someone new, who wants to step into photography or videography to see if its someting to fall in love with, 2000 bucks is a huge amount of money. also, there is absolutely no need for a beginner to start with a fullframe camera. if I would be a beginner, I would go for a used sony a6000 or so, which is about 300 bucks since its old but its absolutely more than enough to begin with.

The S9 is interesting, but the lack of compact primes ruin it's potential. I love the 1.8's they have, they are the perfect size for the S5, but for a camera without a grip, I can't see them being comfortable to hold. If they can come out with some lenses in a similar size to Fuji's f2 primes, I'd love to pick up a S9 as a companion to my S5.

It's worth noting that those f2 primes are for crop sensor cameras. Full frame lenses are always going to be a little larger.

There's been some videos of people using the L-mount 35mm 1.8 and the 50mm 1.8, both on the S9 and they've said it feels and looks great. Light also. Sigma also makes a 45mm 2.8 L-mount lens that's pretty cool as well.

@@TopshelfJunior Current owner of the Lumix 50mm 1.8 and 85 1.8, here. While they aren't heavy lenses by any measure, I can't help but feel the weight balance will be really off without a proper grip. Especially, if you hold your camera for longer than 10 minutes at a time.

I like the a6700 but it overheats like crazy and I want to be able to stream for long periods of time. I like the FX30 but there is no photo/video togle mode. The Lumix S5ii is nice but it's close to 4k Canadian... RIP my wallet

Yes, it’s a digital crop. You lose resolution the further in you zoom.

I need to see how long it can shoot in 1080p. I used it with a capture card for an hour and a half before it overheated but I had it running in 6k

I believe that the recording limit was a result of its compact size with full-frame sensor causing heat problem. A Thai KZbinr already said that he tried 4K and 6K until the time limit in Japan (not hot weather); then, recording the next clip immediately and it could continue for only a very few minutes. Thus, the time limit that they set is almost the limit of the camera in not hot weather. When he came to Thailand (Hot weather), no addditional problem for indoor but for outdoor it heated faster, almost not reaching 15 minute limitation. He asked the engineer about this, the answer is its size and weight. I have GX85 with almost same size with S9 but has smaller sensor (Micro 4/3), for 4K, it lasts for 30 minutes (but almost impossible to hold with bare hand due to too hot). Bigger sensor without fan seems to reduce the time limitation by half.

Oh. Those Thai youtuber also mentioned that if you want to use S9 continuously wthout heat problem, you need to use battery adapter / DC Coupler). It last longer than using Type C charging.

Other then recording a podcast or ceremony, what scenario would you use it that is truly in need of maxing out your card with 1 clip? I do professional and personal video, out of 2500+ .MOV files in my SSD, only a single ONE is over 15 minutes, and I could still have split that shot into 3 or 4 clips.
