I have been using me ol' trusty Nikon D7100 D-SLR with a couple of fairly cheap lenses. My dream camera at the moment which is also the one I ordered even though it was on the very limit of me being able to afford it is actually the subject of this video! Specifially, the X variant. As I am a generally a power user, I want to know that I get the best features at the best bang for the buck so I ordered the Panasonic Lumix S5 II X. It not only rekindled my passion for photography, but it also gives me the opportunity to do finally do some video content I always wanted to do.

Well, at least the part of the lenses is fair. Most people don't switch all their lenses just because there is a new camera released. And a lot of the lenses are not even available for the Lumix. Try to find a 50mm f/1.2 lens for the Lumix. Such a lens is just as expensive as the whole Lumix camera. You don't just swap them out for some Sigma lens. What will you do if Sony makes a 8K camera in the future that is $2200? Switch back again? The part about the 6K Opengate does not make sense. He is comparing a 6K camera against a 8K camera and says that the image in the 6K is higher because it has more pixels then 4K but he is comparing with an 8K camera. Then the Sony FX3 is also mentioned because it does not crop in 60 FPS. Well, the FX3 can do 120 FPS for those nice buttery slomo video's. Sure 90+% of the A-role footage might be done in the Lumix, but what do you do if you need that other footage? Buy an extra A1? And that A1 is expensive but I bet his collection of lenses is more expensive.
@itsbeeva
@itsbeeva Жыл бұрын
@@annoholics the comparison makes perfect sense, because to get the same result as the open gate vertical crop - with more of the subject in the frame, the original 16:9 footage on a Sony camera would have to be shot way wider. But that would also mean they’d not only have to crop the vertical footage, but the regular one as well, since nobody wants to have 60% background in their average video. This is not about pixels. It’s about being more user-friendly - saving content creators time, which this Lumex camera does. As a photographer, I’ll stick to Sony, but there’s no doubt this feature is an advantage - one Sony may wanna make an option soon.
@annoholics
@annoholics Жыл бұрын
@@itsbeeva What does it matter how much background you have in your original shot if you can simply cut that of in post and still keep the image that you want without needing to stretch anything. It is not more user friendly to cut of more or less. You simply load your original footage on your timeline and you are done. Harris is using an argument that works if you compare with a 4K camera but he has an 8K camera. In the diagram in his video he clearly shows 4K vs 6K while he does have an 8K camera. He claims that it is an advantage for him to use the Lumix and why he prefers to use it over his A1. It simply makes no sense.

Great video. The LUMIX cameras seem to be the first ones using modern connectivity and quality of life features. It makes Canon and Sony seem like they’re lagging behind. Traditional photography is decreasing as AI improves. Most of the videos people consume are made in this type of informal format. If Sony and Canon don’t release comparable new cameras soon LUMIX will take a big chunk of the market share.

When it comes to features, I think Panasonic is constantly among the top contenders for the last decade. It's just that they are so stubborn in making M43 and CDAF work while other companies have already focused only on perfecting their FF and PDAF system. This camera is Panasonic's first real attempt at making a FF PDAF camera, and it's already able to fight toe to toe if not outright surpassed other FF PDAF cameras. The Big 3 really have to watch out for what Panasonic has in store for the near future.
@corail53

Trad photography is actually getting bigger because people are finding it more enjoyable again. AI is not going to take that hobby away. Most videos people consume is just junk which is why the cinematic styles always convert better. Sony can just make a new cheap camera that caters to that crowd - but why would they bother when most folks who are filming that way are using their phones anyway. These "camera" wars nonsense has been going on since the start of digital cameras and honestly it's all BS.

Definitely a good take. Panasonic Cameras are underrated outside of small portions of the community. I used my GH3 until last year when I shifted to mostly photography, and swapped to Fuji for the convenience of customizable film simulations that I rarely have to take into lightroom. Definitely would switch to an SII or SIIX if I was going to start doing any professional or semi-pro video work again.

I am so glad to see and hear people shining light on this specific series of cameras. I ordered a Lumix S5 II X myself, even! It is so good that it made me want to get back into photography and videography. It was kind of tough for me to afford and even if I won't be able to pay its costs in the long run since it's mostly a hobby and I barely made any money from photography, it was certainly the motivation to keep going. A forgotten passion has been rekindled once more.

Thank you for this video Harris. So I have been looking into "upgrading" cameras for awhile for my studio for a couple years and have been slowly saving towards some hefty purchases. I say "upgrade" because of course I'm still going to use the old camera. I want multiple angles on my streams and even when I am recording a news video, it would be nice to not have to move my entire camera setup to get a second angle - I can just have it recording the whole time, and switch it up. Or direct record to the computer, hit a button on my video switcher and boom. For two straight summers have been renting cameras during the summer for one of the shows we do to play around with different cameras and for the longest time, I felt like I needed to go sony. I have experience using an old Lumix G7 that my children broke years ago, and I naturally stuck with the line I knew and went with the Lumix G9. 10m limitations aside on recording, the full HDMI port directly to my mac allowed unlimited local recording, which is my use case 99% of the time. But it CAN overheat in specific situations, and my lord - I didn't even realize how bad the autofocus was compared to other cameras until I rented some sony cameras for one of my summer shows the last two years. I used the Sony A1 and the Sony Alpha &s Mark 3 I believe or whatever it was called the last two summers, and INSTANTLY the auto focus was one of the biggest things I saw as a massive improvement. Yeah, the G line of lenses was also really nice, but that auto focus. I didn't know it could be that good having only used lumix. It was so good, I decided to start saving. And you have to save A LOT when you're switching camera lines. It's not just the body - you need to get all new lenses too. So even though I have 3 lumix lenses, they are useless on the Sony. Suddenly I was looking at a $3500 sony lense to go with a nearly $4k body, and it really, really adds up. But that autofocus was a game changer. I can look away from the camera and the sony wouldn't just forget I am there. It was amazing. But, again, saving up for it is hard as a solo content creator. You start thinking of a 10 grand purchase (and that's just to get one lense with it) and wonder what you are doing with your life. Is that really the right purchase to step up your videos? You introduced me to this camera and I have since watched other reviews on it. Not only can I use the lenses I already have (though, I may get a new F16 lense anyways, so I have one for each camera), the two main concerns (overheating, which was still a slight issue on the sony cameras) and the autofocus have been completely corrected. Then you throw in the open gate so I have more options in fixing footage in post let alone making shorts - and that I can do this all in 6k giving me even more options to output a full 4k final video without issues - honestly... this is a godsend. Then it's just 2k, which isn't even that much more than I dropped on the G9 at the time. This goes from a 10k purchase to upgrade to literally just a 2k one to use lenses I already have, throw in maybe another $500 for a lense - and now I have saved 7500 on what I was going to spend and saving towards. And now I stay within the same camera line to use equipment I already have, the G9 can become an alternate angle shot or used for top down where it's focus is just fine on objects? Thanks Harris. I may lose a few features on the more expensive Sony cameras that are nice, but for my purposes of news videos, discusion videos, shorts, and streams? This is now the one to get. Maybe even a second one to complete the 3 camera setup I want. Damn.

i've been wanting to upgrade for a while now from my old APS-C Nikon 5200 but price was a massive factor and i always shop for the 'best bang for buck' i am not brand loyal in the slightest so videos like this is what i turn to for advice. after watching your video, i pulled the trigger on an DC-S5iiX. i have my mind blown every time i take a photo or video. i'm sure i would've felt the same way quality wise whichever system i went with. but as you very potently stated here, there is no accounting for the massive price to performace this system offers me. i am now looking at other lenses and already bought the 85m f1.8 last night. thank you for making unbiased content like this. i truly feel i have made the right choice and will be happy with it going forward.

What lenses are you looking for? They make a 16-35 f4, 24-70 f2.8, 70-200 f4 and f2.8, a 70-300 macro, a whole set of matching size and weight 1.8 primes from 18,24,35,50,85 that are all weather sealed. They have a smaller and lighter 20-60 f3.5-5.6 thats weather sealed and even a 50mm f1.4. That covers the vast, vast majority of shooting scenarios, other than telephoto. Thats where Sigma, as a first party lens manufacturer, they have 100-400, 150-600 and the new 60-600. they also have the smaller 28-70 f2.8 for a light travel standard zoom and a whole series of f1.4 lenses, including 50, 35 and 85.

@CameraTim
@CameraTim Жыл бұрын
That's where both manufacturers have been somewhat weak compared to other brands like Canon and Fujifilm. And of course there's ARRI, but they're basically far and above in a league of their own. Sony has had the weirdest problem with skin tones, where no other manufacturer I've seen has had as much green/yellow fringing that can be really cumbersome to deal with. Magenta is an extremely difficult color to control though because it's literally the weakest part of the signal due to it being a combination of red and blue, where green subpixels on sensors make up half the signal (also why green screens are the most accurate for keying). That's an oversimplification of course, but I digress. Panasonic's issue for me for the years I've used their GH line and the EVA1 was that the footage always felt too "video-y", like a classic documentary look where everything looks plain and somewhat lifeless. I'm not exactly sure how to explain it in color science terms, but the best I can say is that the image typically feels more artificial than other manufacturers. All-in-all, sounds like a Gerald Undone video that needs to be made.

uuuh maybe I missed something but the S5II is ABSOLUTELY NOT the only camera that shoots open gate. so there is also the original S5, the GH6 and GH5 that also do that and outside of Lumix there is the Fujifilm X-H2S and the X-S20 that both do 6.2K Open gate recording. Only difference being that the X-H2S is a stacked sensor with a much faster readout speed and the X-S2 is a more "normal" BSI sensor also worth noting that if they don't have open gate, cameras like the Canon R5, Sony A1, Sony A7RV and probably most importantly Nikon Z9 and Z8 all have 8K recording, so even if you don't have open gate you can still use the versatility of such a large resolution for reframing etc. Just use a wider lens basically. Sony, Canon and Nikon still need to jump on that bandwagon, but I'm pretty sure this is either going to be added though fimware to some cameras (FX3 maybe? or even Nikon Z9/8?) or be a part of the next iterations (A9III and A1II are most likely coming late 2023/ before Q3 2024) also I feel like the price discussion about cameras was WAYY too simplified and did not represent the whole picture, basically only speaking of video resolution and megapixels. If the A1 is 6.5k because it can shoot 8K video and 50MP stills, why is the A7RV only 3.9k while it still shoots 8K video but also has 61MP stills? A1 is expensive because it has a stacked sensor that is super fast and allow for 30fps stills shooting for profesionnals. A7RV is capped at 10fps. A7S3 is a try from sony to make a fast sensor without relying on using a stacked one (which is much more expensive), so they made a 48MP sensor binned to a 2x2 pixel array giving a 12MP image, improving both the readout speed (not that far from the A1), and increased dynamic range thanks to the pixel binning. The focus of the A7S3 and all cameras using that same sensor (think FX3, FX6, ZV-E1) is to do 4K video, and do it well. that's it. If you compae that to the Lumix S5II : the readout speed on the S5's sensor is MUCH slower meaning that in both 6K open gate and in standard 4K video, you'll have a lot more rolling shutter in your image than if you were using either a faster sensor (like the A7SIII/FX3) or a stacked one (A1 / Z8 / Z9). It's okay if you don't do too much panning shots, but if you do it's distracting and noticeable about the L mount alliance: it's not that 3rd party lens makers are considered 1st party. Otherise brands like Tamron and Samyang could release their lenses in the L mount as well. The L mount alliance is a closed ecosystem between Leica, Panasonic/Lumix and Sigma. The mount was originally created by Leica for their SL cameras (L stands for Leica), and they built an alliance with a long time partner (Panasonic with which they have made camera collabs in the past, and still do) and Sigma which could bring more affordable lenses in the ecosystem. But don't forget Sigma also makes cameras (FP and FP-L anyone?) and is a legitimate part of the L mount alliance. But having access to all th Sigma Art glass is indeed a perk if you don't care about the video optimized Lumix lenses or the Leica lenses that would require you to sell a kidney. The shutter angle, it's pretty easy to understand : basically 180 degrees shutter angle is twice your framerate, 90 degrees shutter angle is exactly your framerate. As long as you select correctly your shutter speed, almost all brands have introduced 180 degrees shutter angles for almost every framerate (that generally just required to add 1/48s shutter speed to shoot 24fps) I do agree that doing the firmware update right through the app is pretty nice. It will never beat the firmware through SD card that Fujifilm does imho (basically just format a card, drop the firmware on it, put that in the camera, turn it on while pressing the disp/back button and follow the steps. No app, no software on the computer and it's done in a minute or so) From what I've seen if you want a 6K open gate video with faster framerates and stuff for 4K, well you have the Fujifilm X-H2S that is around the same price as the S5II, has 4K60 without a crop, 4K120 with a slight crop, 6.2K open gate and the ability to screw up a fan for cooling. Also shoots 40fps 26MP stills, and has a stacked sensor. But now you have to compromise the fact that it's an APS-C camera, depends where your priorities are I guess

The Lumix S5II is really hard to beat for value, whichever way you look at it. But really, especially so on video. For Photos, I'd still go for Sony (though I'm on Lumix myself still even as a photo main), and the Lumix full frame ecosystem is still a bit behind. But for value, it's pretty insane what the Lumix offers on the video side of things.

I would LOVE a comparison video between ~$2000 cameras. This vs the ZV-E1 for instance, but with a couple others for good measure. How good is the auto focus? What are the supported picture profiles? What lenses would you recommend and their cost? Do cheaper cameras (creators might already have) have the same lens compatibility? Basically a KZbinr’s first big camera video. I have a ZV-E10. Being able to use the same lenses I’ve bought for it is a huge selling point for the ZV-E1. But 6K open gate.

You can also use that camera as a webcam without a capture card, just use the usb-c port with a ethernet adapter and bring it into the streaming software of choice as a source, once on the network you can control them (yes multiple cameras) from a laptop or PC. The networking and live streaming features that are not stream directly to YT or Twitch are not really talked about and you have to read the manual to see those, oh and btw did you know there is a full frame lumix camera that has PoE (power over ethernet) and can basically be operated with 1 ethernet cable for power, control, and video transmission... basically perfect for studio environments and webcam setups.

Lenses are *not* a disadvantage of the L-mount system. There are currently 99 different models available (yes, I counted), everything from 9 to 600mm, macros up to 5x, shift lenses, entire suites of primes at f/1.4, and on and on. Personally I prefer vintage Contax Zeiss lenses but the quality is amazing even with Panasonic's own line... which are lightweight and optimised for video (minimal focus breathing, same size, etc.). An advantage you didn't cover is ability to record BRAW externally for the smoothest editing in Resolve. Plus the Panasonic is superior for stills photography.

I suppose you couldn’t mention that that the reason why the there were quite a few out of focus periods was because you were using a Panasonic to take the video - no ways any Sony would not stay locked onto the face even with the smallest of apertures used. The autofocus system of Panasonic is still way behind Canon & Nikon.

Amazing Camera but the Autofocus SUCKED and Living in Alaska getting Micro 4/3 lens was not Good, so I switched too the Sony A6400 and then ZV-1 and then Sold BOTH camera's got the FX30 and Plan on getting ZV-E10 but I love Videos more then Photo's so the FX30 for me is more plausible But it's good too see a Content Creator talk about a Product specially when it comes to Camera's & Be Honest about it and not be shy about yes I love Sony and I love Panasonic but for different reason as oppose too just one camera*

The Lumix S5ii is no longer the only consumer camera with 6k open gate. The Fuji X-S20 recently joined those ranks and is even cheaper due to being APS-C.

@@Senpai Full-Frame/Fool-Frame/Film-Frame, why be limited to a single artificial construct, when every sensor size has pros and cons, and really not much between them? As you say, you get a camera to get a job done, and you made a big note about the price. Super35 F2.8 has historically been a standard to shoot scenes, and many recognised pro gear to get the job done has been based on the smaller MFT sensor.

Sonys most recent software updates are super easy to install. It has taken a while to get to a good place. Also, with those updates, the FX3 and FX30 now have DCI which not quite open gate but still is quite the improvement. Also, the FX30 at least is cheaper, has better autofocus, is easier to just plug and play to stream. Panasonic does a lot well but seems your shorting Sony as well.

I've been using my Lumix G7 for years as a webcam just plugged into a 4kCamlink and a dummy battery and BOOM haven't looked back. when i travel i take it off my tripod toss my SD card and battery into it and i'm off. I've been impressed with their micro 4/3rd stuff so I'm really excited to maybe upgrade and get their full frame stuff in the future

Nice video. Seems like the comparison is mostly directed at using either camera as a KZbinr/streamer. But what about others like image quality, stabilization, color accuracy, focus speed/accuracy as a photographer or non-streamer (either beginner or pro level) for something around the same price point as the Lumix?

The Lumix cameras have LONG been feature packed and leading the way with options available to the consumer. The g7 is still one of the best buys for beginning content creators, it's SUPER packed with features like 4k and easily unlockable recording times, wifi control, and cheap lenses available for the mft. The S series is JUST as amazing.

Looking forward to seeing what Panasonic will come up with next. As an a7siii user. I know I will never buy another Sony camera. When I see other camera companies constantly releasing updates making their cameras better and better. Meanwhile Sony reskins is cameras like they did with the fx3 6 months later and completely ignored a7siii users and never gave them any of the updates they gave the fx3. It’s just disrespectful at this point

I'm a photographer that uses Canon and I love Canon's ergonomics, I'm not fussed about video specs because my main thing is photos but the first time I grabbed the S5ii I couldn't believe how good it feels in the hand, I almost just want it from the ergonomics alone lol. I also didn't know you could use S5ii in an IRL stream situation and that's honestly really cool!

A bit late and not sure if someone else mentioned, but LUMIX offers software that helps create and upload a streaming network settings file though USB connection. This file would contain your streaming URL and key. This process makes it considerably easier than manually entering the url and key on the camera. I have used it before but also with my LUMIX GH5 II. I believe it should work with the S5 II as well. I got it from LUMIX Japan and its in Japanese but I suspect there might be an English version too.

My issue with converting for KZbin shorts if you don't use the video from KZbin it is harder to get someone to the full video. Yes the short will be better and increased click-through rate for the channel. Although, if you edit directly from your video the person can click and go right to your video.

The Lumix s5ii x is still not in stock where I live, so I bought the Sony a7 IV on a deal, which was 700 bucks less ~1800 new with 5 year warranty, no regrets. But I plan on getting the second generation of Lumix PDAF cameras, I much prefer their approach to software. Sony for some reason thinks hevc/H.265 should only be filmed in 24/50/60 fps, no 25/30 fps and they refuse to patch this even though it's been years.

Hey! I suggest trying out the HIKVISION DS-U02 1080p webcam. It surprised me a lot for how much value it brings with barely any cost. After using it with cameras very much above its pricepoint from the logitech lineup, its far better than anything below the brio, and would bring a lot of value to streamers.

come on SONY, you got a huge uppercut! BTW I'm a Sony fanboy, but I should say it. In the last few years, SONY's first issue is overheating. In my case, I bought A7iv and should put the overheating setting to HIGH still can be acceptable, and then LUMIX S5II make a serious reason to regret the decision to buy the Sony a7iv.

Yes, you can shoot 6K open gate, but only in 4:2:0 color space, not 4:2:2. I wonder if you can record open gate 4:2:2 to an external monitor/recorder? (Then again, that would add some bulk, especially if you're run-and-gun on the street.)
