The only thing I disagree about is the statement that the value of the cards, or effectively the EV of the box, does not affect the price. It may not affect the ratio of Price to EV, but the value of the cards in the set definitely affects the final value of the box. This is why a Stronghold box which has an EV of $1300 has a price of $8k-$10k and a box of Fallen Empires with an EV of $121 has a price of $1000. The spread is about the same at 7-9x because of the age, but the final price is very dependent on the value of the cards.
@brewcrew75503 жыл бұрын
That is too funny. I wrote that 5 mins into the video. Didn't know he was going to talk about stronghold.

@@brewcrew7550 I think the supply for fallen empires is higher than for stronghold.
@brewcrew75503 жыл бұрын
@@The_Outkeeper Supply certainly has some to do with it but I think because there is such a disparity in prices, this shows how little impact supply has on the box price. The reason the cards are so cheap is more to do with the fact that they are terrible cards and not really playable unless you are doing constructed play. To me, the price of the sealed box is much more closely related to the value of the cards. Rudy is correct in saying that the value of an old box does go up even if the cards suck. But this is a perfect example of the magnitude of the increase based on the value of the cards. both are about 7-9x the EV. The target final value is that the EV is 10% of the sealed box value and should move proportionally to the increase in EV as time goes on.

7:50 Given the speech on Timmies being obsessed with the value of cards... Can anyone explain to me why Rudy is upset with the value of standard cards and modern cards? He's brought that up several times lately that this is a problem and yet based on this video it would be a homerun investment to buy Kaldheim boxes and sit on them long term. Just like any modern focused product that's sealed would be. Because over time whats in the boxes doesn't matter.
@angelbradleyfamily7003 жыл бұрын
So right and I'm buying everything $$$ love the game so why not
@dumediat_3 жыл бұрын
I don't want to speak for Rudy, but my impression is that he's referring to the price of singles going nuts lately. The discussion in the video is specific to the value of sealed product over long periods of time vs. the price of singles week-to-week. His explanation of the E.V. of boxes (in other words, the value of individual cards that "Timmies are obsessed with") only going up slightly, while the price of a sealed box goes up ~10x in that same period of time, is highlighting how to invest money into magic cards while minimizing risk. So, buying 6 boxes of a set to try to get specific cards to flip is a MUCH riskier endeavor than buying those same 6 boxes as an investment and holding them long-term as sealed product. With singles prices skyrocketing recently, some of the people flipping cards ARE making some money short-term. This can build bad habits though, because eventually the singles market is going to re-stabilize, and using that same strategy will result in losses long-term. Another issue that is separate (sort of) from finance, high prices of cards are gate-keeping to new players. There is a lot to discuss there, but trying to keep this comment focused on finance.
@angelbradleyfamily7003 жыл бұрын
@@dumediat_ yea your right about all that so I've been buying boxes just to hold on to but I still like getting packs and hitting some big cards fun but like you said as an investment its better to hold onto sealed product even just if you dont have alot of money get one seald old pack and work up to boxes.

It's astounding to think that if my parents had given me a few thousand dollars in high school to buy a bunch of Urza's Saga boxes I'd be a millionaire now.
@HighChancellorAdam3 жыл бұрын
Nah, most likely you would not have spent the few thousand to buy those boxes. Even if you somehow did, and resisted opening them, you likely would have sold them when their price doubled or tripled. The only way you would have held on to now is if you used a time machine (and the Time Police will be after you) or if you bought them and somehow abandoned them but found them again (e.g. you thought they were lost in a move but they weren't, misplaced then located them later, etc.)

@@HighChancellorAdam you have severely over estimated the competence and intellect of the time police. You'd find better law enforcement agents in reruns of Cops, but then you'd have an 80% chance of just randomly picking a bunch of life long white supremacists by sifting through that shitshow.

If you sell a Bullish Verticle Spread you make money if the underlying stands still, moves down a little, or shoots to the moon. As long as it stays above the set threshold by expiration

Love when you do vids like this. One thing you didn't discuss about your box investing techniques is popularity/playability of certain sets. Yes, all boxes gain value over time but I'm curious if you choose more based on age and current price or if you look at those other factors when building up your stock. On a side note it would be awesome to get your opinion in a video on the new Digimon TCG which you've briefly mentioned in a few vids. Those boxes are being scalped like crazy (and people paying it) for a brand new game that doesn't even have an in person playing circuit yet. Is it just that there has been a long gap since they had a TCG or just the way the market is right now?

Yup. Playing with no land because FE didn't give you any and your LGS was actually 70 miles away and the gas station 8 miles away that sold MTG didn't get sealed decks because they didn't sell to existing players.
