I collected this complete foil set (along with the next 3 sets). It was impossible to complete the sets locally. The distribution of foils was messed up by wizards. The internet was the only way to complete a set. I did well through traveling dealers at pre-releases, but still had to resort to the internet to complete this set. Some cards were impossibly hard to get, and commanded gigantic premiums because they were played in standard. They have really diluted the rarity of foils in these newer sets. Gone are those times I suppose. Thanks for the memories.

the crazy thing to note is that there are far more foil cards in a single collector booster nowadays than they were in a full box 23 years ago. Foils are nothing special now, and not many people still have interest for them, at least that's my assumption of it.

@@vincentperon2950 I agree completely. 1 rare per box of 36 packs, to 2 rares and maybe a mythic in 12 packs. It has made the foils worth much less. I have collected the last 5 foil sets completely, and they are no where the difficulty of completion that the first foil sets were. This will show in their value in the long term.

It is mind blowing to me that the value of an unopened Urza box is so much. Especially when a box of Modern horizons can produce as much if not more monetary value with 60 cards worth over 12 bucks in the run including 50 bucks guaranteed in snow covered lands…. Thanks so much for opening such an expensive box and sharing it with us all.. I can see no other good reason accept creating videos to open them though unless you have an extra 100,000 sitting around and want to spend 10% of it…. Thanks It’s been my first 3 months back into the game since 2003 and I am loving it….

As Rudy likes to say, the price is not just about the cards in the box for these old sets... there's very few of these boxes left out there, and a lot of demand from older Magic players to own one. If you open this stuff you almost always lose money, even considering the premium for graded cards.

Oh christ I remember all those cards. I still have a ton in a box at my parents place. Does anyone remember those big encyclopedias with a picture of each card in a set? I remember having a bunch of those... Man this takes me back seeing all those cards that trigger memories, I love this set. My first starter deck was from Exodus, but back then we didn't have any rules and formats as far as me and my friends were concerned, it was a big mix all you can match buffet with any crazy card from any set you can imagine. I'd be pouring over those cards in those books I had back then to imagine combo's, there was no such thing as metadecks..

Crazy how similar your story is to mine. Had to double check if this comment was not written by another me, lol. First Starter Deck was Exodus, playing with friends and school mates on school breaks and stuff. Here in Germany we had an encyclopidia with card prices called "Kartefakt" which we regularly bought to check out card values and stuff. Until today the Urza block is my all time favourite and seeing a box opening like this triggers all those memories and feels. Sadly i sold my old cards in the early 2000s. All my Palinchrons, Cradles, Academys, Sliver Queen, Dreadnaught, Mox Diamond etc. gone for around 100 Bucks all together via Ebay. Looking at ripped apart cradles starting at $500 today, i hate my younger self for that. Wish i would still be holding those beautys, not just for the monetary value...

I honestly don’t under the people who hate on you Rudy. There are some out there who think you are the devil just because you are smart and played your cards correctly for life. People were mad because they said you had a direct deep with insiders for boxes and such. Honestly I don’t see that as a problem. You have the right contacts and decided to use them to your advantage. Not everyone can do all that. Your classic box openings is one thing that made me want to play the game. It allows me to at least glimpse a slim feeling of how it would have felt if I were playing in that time. Your videos have made me want to do the dumbest choices for mtg, collect 1 of every “standard” print run, so not a full collection because I’m not collecting prints for things like modern, commander, or 2hg. Pyromancy may be considered a bulk rare. But its always been one of my favorite cards in all of Mtg. Back in the day I had a Type II (standard) Pyromancy deck. It made Lava Axe an instant speed card for 3 mana instead of 5. Shard Phoenix, Shivan Phoenix, Crater Hellion, Wildfire. All great cards to discard to Pyromancy. Yes, I know the discard is random. But its not hard to pull off. Fun times. Later when Planeshift released. Draco made my Pyromancy deck a fun casual deck.

Can't avoid duplicates when it's a 143 card set and you're opening a whole box.

Even with a whole box, you only receive 36 rares… and there is 44 rares in the set, so technically, it should be possible to find a box with zero duplicates rares

@@bccbcc3935 if they are truly random you have about a .000000045% chance of doing so (1/2.2 billion boxes). So it's probably never happened, if they're randomized. Even with 165 rares in 5th edition the odds of no duplicates in a 36 pack box is only about 2.7%. You would need 390 rares in a set for non-duplication to be likely under these conditions.

Back when foils were rare, lands even more so. Now they sell packs foils (minus like 2 cards) for a premium and 90% of them wont be worth a damn in an equal time frame because they were over printed to oblivion.
