Rudy the pokemon IP is what keeps it afloat. Pokemon has been the most popular anime for over 20 years. It appeals to current kids and their parents who grew up with it. This makes the parent much more likely to buy it because it tickles their nostalgia bone plus its something familiar the parent can "pass on" to the kid. Hard times force people to seek comfort with nostalgia and toys. Its the perfect storm.

Pokemon is played in rotation pretty much exclusively. Pokemon can always print for the future without having to worry about cards more than 3 years old. It's a completely different situation than magic. Anyone I've talked to that plays magic plays commander or legacy which can use cards from whenever. It's hard to create cards that have to jive with every card ever printed. Pokemon simply has to wait a few years and can print whatever they want.
