I don't have a phobia of deep water, I just avoid it because I can't swim, only doggy paddle, so I never hang over the side of boats or bridges and do not wade into deep water, or use the deep end of a pool. I actually have a phobia of thunder and lightning storms, as well as nervous and/or violent dogs. Plus I hate wasps, who like to come straight at me and I'm allergic to their stings. I stopped being scared of the dark in my fifties, as my shortsightedness, made my night blindness worse.

Mike, this is going down as one of my favorites. I connect to a good number of things that you mention, and it’s somehow frightening and reassuring at the same time (17 was especially visceral). Excellent job. Also, the fact that the graphics put you literally on an underwater visual; that’s just fun.

I'm not thalassophobic, but I'm pretty close. I think that the number 1 must-have requirement to be an underwater diver is a serious and severe lack of imagination. The sea didn't use to freak me out, and I wanted to learn to dive, until I heard that it's possible to live for up to ten minutes in the ocean, with saltwater in your lungs, until you painfully drown. That's not just a No from me, that's a Hell No. I do appreciate those that are willing to dive, and I love their footage, god knows it's important, but it's a good thing I'm not required to get it.
@lesnyk255
@lesnyk255 10 ай бұрын
As a former scuba diver, I have to take exception to your remark that those of us who participate in the sport lack imagination. It strikes a note as sour as if I'd said that those who don't dive are spineless cowards who spend their free time trembling in fear under their beds. Neither statement is true. Yes, of course diving is dangerous - so is driving an automobile. Proper education is needed to be aware of the dangers, how to best avoid them, and what to do should the worst happen. It's called Training. And responsible risk management is called Discipline. These - not lack of imagination - are the essential requirements. I no longer dive because my age and physical limitations no longer allow me to do so safely - and the gear has long since priced itself beyond my means. A decent pair of hiking boots are a lot cheaper. Peace to you, bro.

Yeah, but having thalassophobia as a river otter makes my life difficult. I used to sail the great lakes quite a bit, and it became a problem. I'm fine with rivers, smaller lakes, streams, whatever, but being plopped right into dark water without being able to conceive of a bottom is disturbing. I actually get over it when diving. If I can see, it's fine! I learned to dive in the great lakes, and the mines in lake ontario are gorgeous.

Huh, I always thought it wads called "hydrophobia". I just learned something new. I have this fear because I almost drowned in Lake Huron as a little kid, and was always too afraid to learn to swim after that. Edit: That said, I really, really like just LOOKING at deep water. Anything on the blue-green spectrum is my favourite colour. You know that feeling of the sublime? Of that THING that is just so much bigger than you? I LOVE that, so long as I don't have to be physically IN it.

Hi, do a lot of fishing in lakes, and often wade out in water chest deep. On 3 occasions I had very close encounters with snakes. One of these found the snake crawling up the leg of my cut off jeans. Another time a Water Moccasin dropped out of a small willow tree onto my head and shoulders and immediately diving into the water. I then felt it brush against my legs. 😮

The Old Man of the Lake, Oregon- Wood underwater can last for a VERY long time. Consider shipwrecks that still exist after 100s of years. If it's true that the root-ball is partially intact & holds rocks in it (quite common, especially in very rocky areas...such as a shoreline like here), that would explain it standing. Wood generally floats, therefore it's buoyant despite the stones. Getting near the shore, the water is generally shallower & the base would bump the lake-bed, sending it back out. It's more amazing that it doesn't happen more frequently, imo.

My wife and I are from Florida too we're not afraid of water either, but any body of water there's most likely to the an alligator. So we use some cation, no murky lakes or unfamiliar waters what so ever. We do swim and scuba-dive in the ocean, but with common sense. Certain beaches during shark mating season we steer clear. No night or cave diving, there's a point when a man has to know his limitations.

Ahhhhh water, done some dumb things in and under water. Florida was a destination when I was a kid from sitting in front of a plate glass window at our hotel to watch a hurricane to happily swimming around as a teen in some tannin(makes the water brown, leached from trees) river in Kissimmee. From catching sand dollars, petting a small nurse shark and chasing small fish in the shallows the Gulf of Mexico was my playground, down in the Keys I still remember swimming in the beautiful freshwater springs…with the eels but hey they minded their own business. Most of my life water has been my element and joy, now I’m older water is still my favorite place to be…just prefer the tamer pools, though because the Gulf is pretty clear I’d still hang out there.
