I'd be careful not to take that too literally. I think when he says, "it will ruin your friendship," I think he only means in the sense that the games get heated and can lead to a lot of shouting, not necessarily actually ending the friendship. I do agree with your thought that if you are true friends, it would not end the friendship. I will say though, I have seen, though not often, people who are so hyper-competitive that they take things too personally in the game and get very upset about it. Anyway, when they say, "games that could cause you to lose your friendships," I think what they mean is, "games that are lively and exciting to play." In my experience, playing certain games are more fun when we're laughing and maybe some shouting, lol! But, of course, not so much that things get so tense that it would actually ruin a friendship.

I'm surprised that he didn't mention jigsaw puzzles. I was thinking of a Laurel and Hardy movie where they were putting a jigsaw puzzle together along with a cop, a taxi driver, the butler, and a delivery man. It ended up in a free for all brawl because the cop was demanding he search everyone for the last piece of the puzzle.

First game I thought of was Diplomacy. This is a wonderful game and should only be played with strangers. I once play a game where we thought it would be a good idea to play with our wives/girlfriends. 3 out of 4 women left the room before the end of the game in tears, vowing never to play again. My wife was #4 (no tears), but refuses to ever play Diplomacy again.

I think these games only ruin friendships if you're competitive and are a sore loser (or winner). My sister and I play most of these game often and we just have fun playing them. We don't really try to beat each other. Just have fun with it and don't care who wins and your friendship will stay intact.

I have the Exploding Kittens game as someone gave it to me as a gift. I have yet to play it with a group of friends. But from the games you mentioned that I don't have, I would LOVE to get The Oregon Trail card game!! I grew up in the 90's and remember playing the game on that old computer with the green screen, and the game was on a big floppy disc you stuck into the computer... So nostalgic :-). Anyway, here are 3 games to add to this list that were not mentioned: - Pit (card game) - Phase 10 and - UNO I've seen fighting, arguing and shouting in all three of those games.

A lot of these games are news to me, but then again I'm rather an old-school guy on boardgames. Battleship is a game I figured out how to win pretty quickly if you know how the person your playing thinks. That being true, it also means I knew when to RUN when I played my older sister.

When I was a kid, I played Risk with my younger brother. Our most memorable game lasted three days and I won with a huge mound of pieces in the middle of Asia. My brother was brought tears and yes he did get mad, turn the board over and whack me over the head repeatedly with it. Suffice it to say, we are now in our 50's and we haven't played Risk since.

Dune can be pretty nasty... if you go around using Las Gun at every possible chance. Also Hunter Seekers. You likely haven't heard of this board game, it's rare, but one of the most fun out there. You play as either Emperor, Harkonnen, Fremem, or Atreides, 3 character cards, collect equipment cards and use cards, and fight each other. Also collecting spice, harvestors, and betting.

Mike, I challenge you to a game of Scrabble! No one in my household will play me anymore... Risk and Monopoly are the 2 games that used to cause family feuds back when my ex was still in the picture. Our house was at Defcon 2 each time we played one of those games... his face would get all red and then the shouting, and complaints that we were all ganging up on him. Ugh! It got to the point that I had to take those 2 games to my brother's house so that we couldn't play them. Oh... I LOVE Exploding Kittens!! So much fun!! Also, one you forgot to mention... Rummikube. That one ended with some people having hurt feelings too.

An old favorite that would get your friends in a down right fight is Mille Bornes. It is a race car card game that allows you to throw a flat tire, accident, or out of gas on your opponent and if they don't have a remedy card then they need to have a fix and hope your teammate has a roll card.

My uncle, brother and i used to play risk all the time. We loved it and finished 99 percent of the time. I think the longest it took us to play was three days. It was great.

I've never heard of most of these games. But I did buy Risk years ago, a friend talked about it causing family wars at Christmas. I'm not sure I even finished a game of it. I became a raging lunatic (as predicted) I didn't lose it (one New Years Eve) when a group of us played Pictionary. But Holy Mary, Mother of God! I was teamed with my best friend's boyfriend, and we were kicking ass. My BF started screaming we were cheating, another friend stated his partner was an idiot who couldn't even draw a circle if they had to, while pointing at what I'd drawn to prove how stupid they were. I've never wanted to leave a party as much as I did then. Everyone was drinking and I was stuck! Great night sitting there while no one talked and looks could kill.

Diplomacy is best played over months. Back in high school, we had a game where orders were due every Friday at noon. Resolves were done immediately before lunch. Although I didn’t win (Austria-Hungry) it was awesome

The Resistance should probably be numbers 7 through 2 (but Diplomacy will always be #1). Our group has forbidden itself from future games of The Resistance. Honorable mention: Cosmic Encounter. Great game. Excellent game. However, at some point somebody is going to be on the wrong end of a galactic dogpile.

Battlestar Galactica game sounds a lot like the series itself. Another thing I noticed is the list goes from game I used to play to those I knew but had gotten out of board games to those I have never even hear of before. Which makes me think the designers of these things have a long been on a steady downward spiral! LOL

My family plays Settlers of Catan and we play for blood. We've had family members walk-out over people trading cards like the rules say you can. So, we had to make our own rules that trading is only allowed until the pirate ship hits the first time. Then you can't trade anymore. The yelling and walkouts have stopped. The game lasts longer, but no yelling or hurt feelings.

Diplomacy and Risk makes arseholes out of older people. Battleship is also easy to crosscheck; just put in a white peg on your own board when the other guy tries to hit you. Then he can't complain that you cheated.

I'm surprised no one mentioned "Axes and Allies". Set in WW2, 2 to 5 people command the "Axes" Germany and Japan VS "Allies" US, Great Britton and Russia. Between movements of your army and where and what to build next can destroy friendships just as well as a real war can.

I absolutely loved Settlers of Catan and Carcassonne but they can a bit crazy at times .. I was surprised that Settlers of Catan or Monopoly weren't at the top of the list though.

I remember playing Skippo and Uno with my grandma and cousin. In Uno whenever me or my cousin would put down the draw two or draw four cards and it was Grandma's turn Grandma would say "Hey!" and draw the cards. My cousin and I would loao! Grandma would get back at us by making either of us draw two or four cards. We never had any fights over it we simply had fun!

I have played most of these games. Hurt feelings come with these games. Only game that actually came to fight was Warhammer 40k. Friendships actually get tested just interpreting the rules, how rules stack and if someone is just not tell the rules from their army book.

A buddy and I were playing Monopoly Empires and after u best him eight times in a row, once by filling up three towers while he had nothing in his tower, he grabbed the board, threw it and lunged at me. Disagree a bit on Battlestar Galactica. The part that makes people never trust people is that people can later become Cylons, so you never want to fully trust everyone because they could easily turn mid-game. That's where the true tension between people forms.

I have no board came horror stories. I am that guy that no one wants to play against but everyone wants to play with. I win almost every time in Monopoly (my all time favorite), risk, scategories, outburst, life, trivial pursuit, phase 10, clue, the Oregon trail, chess,, you get the point. The only ones that I routinely lose at is mancala, cards against humanity, apples to apples, without decency. I absolutely love to play games and personally do not care if I win or lose as long as long as we are following the rules, but other people don't seem to feel the same way

One night werewolf you close your eyes wait for your cue to do your turn, then after everyone does that, you open your eyes, yiu have 5 minutes to figure out who if anyone is a werewolf, a tanner (who kill themselves) or the village. You kill a villager without a werewolf, werewolf wins, you kill villager and werewolf no one wins and if you kill the tanner and werewolf both win, but if you kill tanner and tanner only tanner wins and others lose.
