Another important event in history is the industrial revolution. We would not be where we are today as far as technological advancement if it wasn’t for the industrial revolution. Now that I think about it, remember when he said 5,000 years of history? Well, we know it's between 100,000 and 300,000 years. Because of that, I think when he meant history, he meant written history (which is technically all that history really is) and anything before that, including the agricultural revolution, is pre-history

The life of Napoleon deserves an honourable mention. I know he's seen as a villain to most of the world because of British propaganda, however Napoleon implemented the civil code and the army corp system which went on to be adopted by most if not all of Europe. He liberated most of the Italian states from Austrian rule and Poland from Prussia and Russia. It was also his campaign in Egypt that led to the discovery of the Rosetta stone, the key to deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphics

@@XXXTENTAClON227 I'm sorry, I didn't know the people behind the List25 channel are historians, I thought they got their content from a few hours of research they put in to make this video....also when I say "British propaganda" I'm including the history books covering the events of the time, that were more than likely influenced by British propaganda. Pretty sure in most of those history books a greater percentage of the content was sourced from a British recollection of the events compared to a smaller percentage sourced from a French recollection...basically the British version of the events of the time is accepted, studied and broadcasted more than the French version

I am glad 9/11 was not mentioned, since that would mean radical islam and its psychotic followers achieved their goals by converting America into one huge police state, which it did in a way. I hate flying not because of fear of something happening but just the inconvenience of security lines and ridiculous procedures. You used to be allowed to walk to a gate and see off your family or friends without a boarding pass and walking through a basic metal detector. Now bringing a nail clipper can get you in the "no fly list."

The War on Terror, the fall of the Taliban, the fall of Saddam Huessien, The fall of Iraq and the subsequent power vacuum that was left and allowed ISIS to take control, which led added the the crisis in Syria, the refugee crisis, and increasing tensions between the USA and Russia. ISIS also became organized enough to carry out The Paris Attacks. It also led to a pseudo police state in America and the fear of ISIS has led to a a lot of countries embrassing right wing ideology.

Importance is a sum of how ground-breaking, revolutionary and long-lasting something is. as a soldier in the " cold war " I can tell you it was not as "cold" or diplomatic as most think. I served for 10 years, but over the course of the cold war, ( with the deaths of Korea and VietNam excluded) over 2000 American service members were killed in very hot conflict with foreign military forces. I saw some of this myself, and lost too many brothers to the cause. and my whole generation of soldiers has been utterly forgotten or ignored by most who claim to Honor the service members.

The trouble with compiling a list like this is that the more recent the event, the harder it is to objectively say how important it is - if by "important", we mean how far into future history it will reverberate. The rise of Soviet communism dominated 20th century geopolitics, but has pretty much faded into insignificance. The JFK assassination was a nightmare for those of us who lived through it - but in terms of historical significance, does it really weigh more than the assassinations of Lincoln, Ghandi, or Caesar? I don't think we can say yet. I believe the digital revolution will be seen as a game-changer, but my guess is no better than anyone's. "The future's not ours to see..."

Many mention that this is what was most important to history, but i would like to suggest that its important for western history. Dont forget that enormous amounts of people live in asia and africa that wouldve been affected by ”asian” and ”african” history. The assassination of jfk definitely isnt as important as the opium war or the different waves of colonialism and imperialism imo.

What specifically would you add? I think the issue is not so much with the list per se but how it is presented. And a point is well-taken re the JFK assassination. That was too specific, I think, particularly since the point he was making concerned the continuation of the Viet Nam War and how that impacted the world. I think the list is meant to talk about events or changes or processes that have impacted the world, all of humanity as a family, as evidenced today. it did seem to lose some steam as the countdown continued, getting closer to the present-day. That's understandable. It's much harder to see what's extremely important in the world when there's not much distance or hindsight.

The emphasis is on Importance, events whose effects are still felt today. Japan an China have a very fascinating history, as do others, but they aren't as important or influential today. Think of Japan's isolationist practices, for example. An isolated country isn't going to have much organic influence 200+ years later.

Interesting list. It brings up several questions: 1. What is “history?” 2. Why is something considered “history?” 3. Why is something considered important and other things are not?” 4. If something very important happened in the past but wasn’t written down can it ever be “history?” Can it ever be “important?”

1. History can be defined as a series of events that led to X conclusion. 2. It means an event that had significant impact, which is completely based on opinion and common sense, on the X conclusion. 3. Because there were a lot less people who cared about history back in 1200 BCE than now. Back then people just didn't bother to label the date of death of their king or even if a war was fought because they didn't even have a calendar, and an average person back then would just be a peasant wanting nothing but to feed his family. It's very much the opposite right now. 4. On my definition, yes that something can be history. Everything can be history. _Important_ of great significance or value. However, it is not important, as there was no good incentive to pass that importance to generations beyond.

Jesus was a very, very VERY important guy. Do you always notice that BC and AD thing on specific years in history? Well, BC means Before Christ. BC was a HORRIBLE time for people. During this time, people would fight and kill each other for no reason. In the Tenth Century Jesus took a stand and wanted to end all of this. If I am correct the roman people wanted Jesus dead or Jesus wanted to kill himself to save the world or something but I am not very sure. I'm not that buffed in the life of Jesus like I am in other subjects of history. Anyways Jesus' death was known as " Christ " Christ Ended the BC time period and started AD or CE ( depending on which one you use but i may be wrong again ) which is are current time period. AD means After Christ. In this time period life became better and people finally stopped fighting and killing each other. Jesus' Life and Death was a very important thing in history.

A number of criticisms. 1. This list is extremely Euro-centric.With rare exception, you would think that nothing important happened any where else in the world. 2. With the exception of the space race and the internet, science short changed. What about the publication of On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection? How about Issac Newton's discoveries, the foundation of Physics and the development of Calculus? The discoveries of Einstein, Pasteur or of DNA? Henry Ford and bringing the automobile to the masses? So many world-changing technologies and only two of them mentioned. 3. You mentioned The Black Death, but not small pox that decreased the native population of the Americas by 90% by 1600. 4. You ignored literature. How about Machiavelli's The Prince or Sun Tzu's Art of War, just to mention two?

Although you will have more than a few critics claim this or that event should have been included or excluded, your list is good. I would, however, take exception to your word "events" in the title. Many of these were not events at all, but rather processes, like the Industrial Revolution. While we can perhaps cite to a specific thing that happened, often these events were just markers on larger process time lines (as you mention several times). For example, the Black Death was a consequence of the feudal model and overpopulation that inhibited technological innovation; so, once the Plague had decropped the human herd, innovation, exploration, and revision of the human mindset could proceed. Anyway, again, aside from this quibbling, the video was another of your greats.

Just a few I would have included on this list although I did enjoy this guys :) The thirty years war - led to notion of each to their own with peace of Westphalia and permanent split between Protestantism and Catholicism. Catholic churches influence weakened and France and habsburgs able to assert great power in wake of the war. Permanent thereafter decline of the Holy Roman Empire and sparking enlightenment principles through contemporary thinkers such as Hobbes and Descartes. The Columbian exchange - although Columbus didn't technically 'discover' the Americas his legacy lasted and increased interest in the already empowering empires of Portugal and Spain who had sought new routes to the east after the emergence of the Ottomans and their subsequent attempts at infiltrating Indian ocean trade. The exchange of goods and cultures brought about great changes in the way europeans saw themselves on the world stage and were given access to huge deposits of resources and other things such as silver, gold, potatoes, maize, cocoa and sugar cane. With the Americas culture forever shifting away from its tribal based roots with new animals such as the domesticated horse and cow and with new economic systems of governance with eventually national identities emerging as ( in large part at least ) a result of European subjugation and social ordering.

#25 is a joke. The Persians had far more sophisticated art, literature, governments, and culture than the Greeks. Both the Greeks AND the Romans were influenced heavily by Persian customs and innovations. Much of what people believe to be of “Roman” origin is actually Persian in nature. The early road systems, as well as cataphracts, are just two examples. Also, the Greeks did not “thrive” after the Greco-Persian wars - quite the opposite actually. They used Persian Emperors as backers to fuel their civil wars, which weakened them enough for Alexander to take over.
