I recently watched 50 First Dates starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. Everybody told me that this was just another romantic comedy... but oh, how wrong they were.......

Honestly, a horror movie that starts with the vhs scene on the boat titled "Good Morning, Lucy" about this woman with amnesia trying to escape kidnapper Adam Sandler every day while slowly uncovering more about her own life through talking with Adam Sandler and keeping a journal does sound like an infinitely better movie. I mean, the amnesia itself is a pretty solid horror twist to begin with.

Pov: Your last memory is you going to bed in your home, where you live with your dad and brother. You wake on a strange boat, see video tape next to your bed and you watch it. The tape tells you that 20 plus years have gone by and your family and friends are dead, despite that from your perspective they were alive yesterday. You also learn that you have husband and child. You walk up on deck where your supposed husband and child are quietly waiting for you. You stare out into an endless sea surrounding you on all sides, you have no where to escape. Your "husband" walks up and kisses you on the cheek and your child, who you don't recognize, hugs you. Your husband tells you 'Alright I just need to finish recording my review of 50 First Dates for my KZbin channel and we can start heading back to land.'

So why would he make an exception for a child of his own blood? Though I DO wish he hadn't left that open-ended cuz sadly people assume the worst. I'm gonna believe he'd be teaching her the sweariest of swear words, pranking her, & telling her complete lies about how the world works just cuz he can get away with it. 😈 AlphaDad: "When you turn 18, you have to spend the whole year dressed up as an animal mascot. Where's the abduction? Speaking as a woman who really enjoyed this movie (one of very few I've bothered to rewatch in my adult life...) I found it heartwarming. Even with her trauma, she was able to find love and build a life that actually moves forward, instead of repeating the past indefinitely. Can you imagine if nobody came into her life to break her out of the routine her family was running for her? Eventually she'd get old enough their lies wouldn't work anymore and things would get even uglier and she would wind up in some kind of mental health facility instead of out there living her own life. She has her struggles, but that sort of real world experience is the only thing I know of that has a chance of forging new neural pathways and eventually restoring her ability to store long term memories eventually.

@@priestesslucy As someone who has been in an abusive relationship the way Adam Sandler acts is eerily similar to textbook abusive behavior. Also why did their famiky have to fake the same exact day every day anyways? What harm was there in being honest? The whole movie is contrived1 and creepy and stupid. Also 'Real World Experience' in the way you're talking about doesn't change her condition at all, making new memories does literally nothing to help a brain heal, in real life or in this movie.

I went to a film class in high school and our teacher taught us there was a whole category of youtube videos where people made trailers for movies and made them look like different genres. The horror one I remember was the animated Snow White, but it was cut to make it look like the Dwarfs were chasing her with the witch and they ate her after catching her sleeping on the bed. I think there was one where they redid "Ferris Buller's Day Off" to look like a psychological thriller where Ferris' friend was the one chasing down Ferris like some detective going after the killer. They are really interesting.

Sandler's antics aside, did you all know the ending of this movie apparently inspired some real life treatments for amnesia?...and that for the most part they WORKED? Apparently, for all the wrongness of the movie, it actually got some aspects of Anterograde Amnesia (that's what Barrymore's character has, by the way) in a surprisingly accurate matter. For a real life comparison, search Clive Wearing's case. It's illuminating, to say the least!

I promise you if the movie was formatted like Memento where the chronological order of events are reversed, with nothing at all changed, it *would* be a psychological horror. Could you imagine going to see a rom com movie that starts with a girl trapped on a boat with a VHS tape that says "Good morning, Lucy"? Like what the fuck.

Love how Alpharad can take a romcom with THE sandler and then turn it into a horror film just by switching perspectives. Just imagine waking up each and every time to people you don't even know or remember in someplace completely different than what you're used to. Then remember that you'll never get used to it. So you live with that fear of ignorance each and every time, while also not knowing if the people around you are dangerous or not. Every. Single. Day. 👀👀 Has to be really taxing on the heart
