THE REEL TEST Casting distance may change if both reels have equal amounts of line on both spools. If one spool is filled with more line than the other the one with less line likely will cast longer. That is what makes using a line counter such a handy tool. There might be some difference in spool size helping add distance. However, spool weight is likely the deciding factor. Larger diameter spools release more line per turn than small spools if both are spinning at equal speeds. Larger diameter spools hold more line per turn of the spool than a smaller one. In your initial testing you used two pound line if I remember correctly. I also remember you were getting casts in the fifty plus foot range as well. I mention this because I get measured distances of sixty feet plus using less costly reels and braided six pound line. I’m using a 1.68 meter one piece rod rated for 1 to 6-gram lures. If I use a 2.1 meter rod the distances increase substantially more. It only takes a slight change in spool tension to shorten or increase casting distance. If the spool is to lose it vibrates and distance is reduced and if too tight it shortens distance as well. Magnetic brakes are very consistent however, spool tension changes as the ends of the spool seat into their contact points. I pay special attention to the ends of the spool shaft and use an oily Q-tip to clean them regularly.

Gizmo Carr, great post. With your 60 feet casting distance, what weight lure were you casting? Specially what lure exactly? I'm assuming that it's not a trout magnet given how light that is? 60 feet would be impressive even with a spinning reel. Thanks again for posting your experience!
@gizmocarr3093
@gizmocarr3093 3 жыл бұрын
@@2musiclover534 A Trout magnet is nothing more than a weighted fly made with soft plastic. Like all lures it works best using line that fits it size. Fact is; lots of weighted fly patterns weigh more than Trout Magnets do. If you want or need too; two Trout Magnets tied a foot or less apart fish like one does and cast further too. You can cast one Trout magnet 60 feet if you use a longer rod. But casting distance and casting accuracy are two different things. Two pound line works better on Trout Magnets than four pound does. Because it sinks faster and has less friction from water and water current. If you put a tiny jig on say four pound line in a swimming pool it will suspend the jig at some point and the jig never sinks further. All fishing line floats however some sink deeper than others. Even if the line is heavier than water; the friction of a solid in water will suspend it if enough line is placed in the water. If a lure weighs three grams and made of plastic or wood it cannot reach as deep as one made of metal or lead. Because they are bigger in size and produce more friction in water. The best lures are ones that look like fish food, act like fish food and you can swim or drift past a fish. Pick ones you want or think will work and fish were the fish are and catching some is not too hard.

@@THEREELTEST you've likely handled the majority daiwa has to offer; i'd have to go through your archive to know. i went straight to their high end sv tw and stayed there. i'm down here in texas and typically stay away from finesse by choice and the sv tw with it's 100 size spool is an all around solution. personally it's the best reel i've ever used and i have the new met20 jdm 7.1; the latest antares is too damn heavy and don't like the spool size. until shimano fixes their atrocious thumb bars on their premium baitcasters that are way too high on the spool and have too much travel, i'll stay in my newfound home...daiwa. daiwa's sv tw braking system punishes sv infinity as well; not a fan of oiling a brake plate every so often to extend the life of the polymer tabs only to adjust brakes by 2 on the external dial after doing so per shimano maintenance.

A Kuying Teton 6'2" SUL spinning rod will definitely outcast both the Aldebaran and Alphas BFS setups (I have the shimano). Being able to cast a gram on BFS is nice in a pinch but in my opinion, below 2 g spinning is still the way to go.
@seanwoodburn2616
@seanwoodburn2616 4 жыл бұрын
As weight goes up you begin to see an advantage with casting reels. At 100g and above the casting reel universally out performs spinning reels for distance in competition. 75g is very close. At 50 g the spinning reel starts to show an edge. Although the 18.g records for both reels are within a few cm of each other day to day casting shows an edge for the spinning reel. The casting reel is not even used in 7.5g single hand distance. Even my best BFS reels fall meters short even with level wind removed. But my argument examines casting athletes with highly developed skill sets and insanely expensive highly tuned reels. MOST fishermen will not see nor even need the advantage. There are better reasons for justifying the choice of one reel type over another. Most people do better with a spinning reel because it is user friendly out of the box. There are advantages to using casting reels for very light lures though. Accuracy and drag smoothness are vastly superior especially with 2g plugs and 1 or 2kg. leader in streams. Drop shotting same weight from a boat? Use the fixed spool reel. Leader is usually heavier but it will fall freely from the open bail. Cheers!

From a physics point of view it doesnt make sense to have the spool under filled. You're forcing the reel to do more revolutions when youre ability to generate revolutions is already severely limited by the limited weight of the lure.
@RonMTube
@RonMTube 4 жыл бұрын
The difference in diameter of a half filled vs a filled shallow BFS spool is negligible, so revolutions don't change but the weight reduction may be helpful.
@markrigg6623
@markrigg6623 4 жыл бұрын
In my experience filled spools always outperform underfilled spools that are lighter. The mechanical advantage of the larger diameter seems move the larger mass with sufficient efficiency to outweigh (no pun intended ) the lower inertia of an underfilled spool. I will grant you the advantage may vary with reels I havent cast but certainly it holds true for the two models I tested this with.

A longer rod will make much more difference than a spool that has 20 yards more or less light line on it.
@seanwoodburn2616
@seanwoodburn2616 4 жыл бұрын
It is actually a complicated issue with more than one answer. Basically you are correct but you can create a nomograph that shows peak performance varies a lot depending on rotational mass, weight and geometry of the spool, line diameter, weight of the lead, wind velocity, direction of the wind and casting arc. That is a lot of variables to manage. If you have enough weight to get an overloaded spool rotating at top speed and that speed barely matches velocity of the lead then you will get a longer cast than a slightly under filled spool with same weight and conditions. A lighter lead on the same spool may very well under perform. Part of the strategy of longcasting to win tournaments involves being able to adapt to a given condition in real time...this is why tournament casters carry spare spools or even spare reels with the same capacity but different spool geometry or different amounts of the same line. I have a custom reel based on the Abu 3600 but it is wider than stock. Capacity with .25mm mono is identical to my 5500 but if all factors, conditions and rod are the same they cast differently. One of the reasons we use the lightest spools we can is that we can vary rotational mass by varying how we load the spool. There really is no one "silver bullet" serves all situations as far as ultimate distance is concerned. Honestly it is part of what makes the game fun! Fortunately as far as fishing goes you can have fantastic success and a great time without the skills of a tournament caster. Cheers!

Depends what your you prioritise in your comparison...if it’s just casting distance, than scorpion with IDC-5 will win all day. But if refinement and smoothness is the measure of “better” (whilst almost casting as far), than the Scorpion DC is actually pretty far down the list compared to the other DC reels (even under the Curado DC and SLX DC).
@THEREELTEST
@THEREELTEST 4 жыл бұрын
@@michaelgking87 you dont know what you are talking about, the Scorpion DC doesnt have micro gears but its handle tolerance is better than the Curado and SLX DC. Yes. 1 gram lures are a bit of a folly on a baitcaster. This is stunt casting that doesn't bear much comparison with actual fishing conditions.

What's not to get? BFS allows you to use a baitcaster for finesse presentations. No longer need to switch to spinning. Below 2 g, spin is still the best option, but other than that why not enjoy the benefits of a baitcaster?

@@RonMTube the biggest benefits to baitcasting gear is it's ability to handle larger baits and line, and you can give baits a soft presentation (flipping/pitching). For light lures you will always get better distance out of spinning gear, and there is little risk of blowing up your spool after you hiked a mile to get to the trout spot. I just don't understand the BFS thing. It's the worst tool for the job.

@CheezusCrust I own more baitcaster combos then spinning gear. But they are all for larger baits, and line. Spinning gear is far better for light lures. If you want to fish with the lightest gear out there just learn to fly fish.

@@alexanderlavoie5461 for me the biggest benefit of baitcasting gear is the ability to precisely stop a lure in flight for better distance and splash control. I also prefer how they're operated, especially if you don't switch hands after a cast. Of course it takes practice to not blow up a reel but with a shallow BFS spool it's no big deal to cut off and pocket the birds nest and respool in the field. I'm not defending BFS with Trout Magnets. For most of us, that's just the ultimate test of gear and ability, the latter of which I don't have. But put on a 1/8 oz lure or a Ned rig and then BFS is a real joy.

Probably yes, but it lacks the alphas versality. This reel can be used on bfs and M/ML fishing.
