Great video as usual. Just a couple of things. I daily my A110 and absolutely love it. As far as luggage space is concerned you can now buy a fitted luggage set from Bag World (I helped design it and was the first customer). My wife and I manage trips away no problem at all. Helmets aren’t a problem either - the boot was designed to fit two helmets in for track days. The wipers need to be put into maintenance mode to lift up with the bonnet closed. With the ignition off just push the stalk all the way down. As for the more “prosperous” driver there are other seats options that accommodate a wider frame but I am lucky to be able to fit into the buckets and love them. Oh, and the Life110 geometry settings transform the car making it more planted and stable whilst still as direct. Overall I love mine and never fail to get out with a smile on my face.

Echo this as a A110 owner also - I managed a long weekend to the Lakes with my girlfriend and dog and managed it (just!) Only other point I had was that residual prices are as good as the Porsche’s if not better when you consider how many options are considered must haves to retain a residual on a Porsche. Cracking car, cracking review :)

I tried the 2022 A110 GT, which has the A110 suspension, and the 300 horsepower engine, and you sit almost an inch lower than in the regular A110. Great feeling, very light, nimble, comfortable ride, surprisingly good sound from the engine, and so easy to drive fast. The Cayman equivalent comparison would be the S version with the turbo four. I'd take the A110 GT over that.

Owning one of those for more than 2 years now. Makes me happy every time, on every ride. - Last summer my wife and myself went for a 9 day trip to the Alpes, this year nearly a week in Bruges. If you choose your bags wisely there is more packing space than one should think. Take the break-down equipment out of the rear trunk and place it behind the seats (if you are not too tall), and you can move two reasonable weekender bags inside. Two aircraft-style handbaggage suitcase in the front, and two slim bags beind the seats - there you go.

Had a go in one of these on track last year and i was blown away by the fun character of the car. One of my all time favorites is the Mclaren 570S and the A110 felt like a slightly softer and budget friendly version of that. As much as i love Porsche, especially the 718 or 981, for a day on the track id rather drive the Alpine.

Very generous assessment of the A110. We love ours, we are lucky for practical duty we can use our VW Arteon with a hatch that would fit a grand piano in it :). The Alpine replaced my 6 year old Mk3 Audi TT , so very big shoes to fill . The Audi was a great allrounder . Alpine is more focused but definitely more delicate, and a lot less practical , however I am still able to daily it. Perhaps your Porsche is the perfect balance . Cheers from Brisbane

For the fouling of the wipers when you're washing the car, this happens in lots of cars nowadays. The manual will tell you how to move the wipes halfway up the screen (usually a press and hold of the wiper stalk when the ignition's on/engine off.) Then you can easily lift them from the screen or change the blades.

I like fun and quirky cars. I am soon to make the transition from US to EU, so on the look out for a car to take advantage of the speeds and roads there compared to the rather boring straight lines that cross the North American continent. I have had a few porsches, a couple of BMWs, and now I have the 160hp Fiat 500 Abarth. I am taken aback that the A110 is near the same weight as my little hot hatch but has 100hp more in a package that actually allows you to use the weight and power. I will definitely being looking it up when I make the move later this year.

The A110 is the only new car at Amy price point that I'm genuinely interested in. Ok so it's out of my budget but even if I had an open chequebook there is nothing else even a twice the price to tempt me as many modern cars feel so detached, are too heavy, too firm and simply try to compensate with excessive power. The Boxter and Caymen really did set a benchmark for usable drivers cars. My friend used to take European road trips in a Boxter S and always praised the practicality of the car. The Alpine being as light as it is has no need for overly taught suspension and it's also nice to see there are smaller wheels available for those of us with a more sensitive posterior. I think.the only criticism I've heard of this car is the lack of a manual transmission option for a more traditional feel. I'm sure that exclusivity will aid strong residual values. Also I've discovered a few Renault models also have wipers that sit tucked below the bonnet when parked.

Excellent review of the A110 including the practicality of owning the A110 and the Boxster. I considered buying the A110 but failed to convince myself to splurge £50k on effectively an excellent Renault. I had a preference for the Porsche Cayman for half the price, with better storage space, two additional cylinders and naturally aspirated engine. However, money was a factor in buying the cheaper used Cayman without any PCP, if money wasn’t an issue then the A110 remains desirable option. The Boxster GTS be my choice for reasons that you eloquently explained. Thanks Pete, please more A110 content if possible.

I test drove one of these about a year ago when I was looking for a new daily drivable sports cars. Compared the Supra, 981 Cayman, Evora 400 and the Alpine. I would have an Alpine right now if it wasn’t for a small mistake at the dealer where the car I had reserved was sold by mistake. But it delayed the process a little that I saw the Emira launch and so placed my deposit down on that. Hopefully receiving the car in the next month or so, but I so do love these little Alpines!

Very enjoyable review. I definitely had to test drive a Cayman before I could decide but as good as the Cayman was, I just didn't feel excited by it. Bought a Premier edition A110 and can be completely honest in saying I have never at any stage enjoyed a car more. It's my fifth mid-engined car along with a couple of Lancia Integrale's but not have given the feeling of confidence to exploit every once of the cars performance the way my Alpine does. Mix that in with its ability to feel so comfortable and I just don't really want to drive anything else. I do hate the infotainment screen and wish mine had apple carplay but that is about it. No issues at all as a daily and I just learn to pack smart.

Love the luggage test. Main reason I had two boxsters and the R8 which has a large space behind the seats. Both cars drove to the Dolomites for a walking holiday with the wife. Great review thanks. I really want a Alpine and have tried one. The 'farts' and visibility are negatives while the drive is fantastic. But the big downside is the luggage space for touring. Same as an Exige and why I just cancelled my Emira. So I'm currently on the cote d'azure having driven here 2 up with 1 months of luggage in my boxster. 2 x full size flight cases, 2 large soft bags, 5L oil, 5L screenwash, full bag of car bits and tyre foot pump, 4 sets of hiking boots, jogging kit, yoga mats, 2 full size fold up picnic chairs, full sized laptop and accessories and even more soft bags squeezed in-between. What other mid engined, 2 seater convertible could you do a whole months tour for 2 people in? Every year I do this and try to find an alternative to the boxster but there isn't one. Ironically had an email from Adam at Alpine in Winchester today asking if I was still interested in one. Having spent time ( on a groggy day) at the showroom just looking and discussing ( didn't want to drive unless I was nearer to committing than we were at the time). I do think they are a nice product. You can get adjustable seats for them. I currently have a BMW E86 Coupe and been eyeing up the opposition. The Boxster is an issue. Having had a Westfield ( and before you mention no space, the wife and I did 5 days at Le Mans in it with tent, luggage and sleeping bags) so you 'adjust to soft bags like the Alpine and you can make space. So, we like the roof off , like our Elise did as well. I am not sure on a sportscar with an auto. Its a bit lazy, if that's the right word. Being old skool doesn't help. Our auto is the family wagon for wafting. 4 cylinders is a thing. Yes, I am living in the past. But, I think a weekend car should have more. Its not adding up for the Alpine even if I do like them. Its been a dilemma for a while and others we were thinking is an Evora with the lazy V6 manual , but no roof off, SLK 55 AMG , which is a lardy lump , but has a lot of CC to compensate, just avoid corners. Not liking the latest Z4 . A neighbour has the M40i one and it just looks BMW and not as much an event to drive. Bit like my coupe, it goes under the radar to be honest. The Porsche itch is still there, which is why I said is an issue. Not a fan of the farty 4 cylinder, sorry Pete. Or being an Auto. But the 6 in a manual a few years older to yours would work. Its a quandary I cant answer. Then the wife fancies a new MX5 .............. that's the roof off car and we start all over again............

I love this comment and actually demonstrates your love of cars and that actually the researching a new car is half the fun. Kudos to you for your Westfield Le Mans trip…truly heroic 👍 If you don’t mind a small boot then an F Type cab is worth a thought although not many manuals out there. MX5 is great but a 4 pot. Abarth 124 Spider is defo worth a try. Brilliant little cars and they sound awesome 👍

Really enjoyed the video, would be interesting to compare this standard car against a life 110 modified one like the green one you saw on your drive out. Will have to try an Alpine soon, same engine as my Megane but a totally different driving concept

Pete great review. After driving one for a weekend absolutely loved the car . You are right you can’t quite put your finger on it but a fantastic driving car on broads and secure on motorways . The joy on driving it on a winding Undulating road is something to try and bottle . In the market for one but dilemma is I love open top light sports cars ( had several mx5’s) Noticed that they have prototype electric softtop so just hope it makes production . Until then think I will need to scratch the itch and buy one .

Yes let's talk practically as a daily. Boxter 25-30mpg, Alpine A110 33-35mpg as per EVO. It must be all those additional bags you can get in the Boxster that drags the petrol consumption down!

Great review Pete. I have tormented myself over these, purely to do with the practicality element, as I've never been happy with the idea of something like this being a 'second / occasional' car. I'd want it to be my daily car, and my current daily is a Clio 220 Trophy. I wonder how thick that rear glass screen is, and whether it'd be safe enough to attach one of those tri-suction devices to the rear screen & centre of roof to be able to carry a bike?

Not sure 🤔 It would look really cool with a Seasucker and a nice bike on it 👌👍

The wiper blade thing seems to apply to a lot of French cars. Same deal with my Renault Megane 3 RS and my work Peugeot Partner. With the engine off, put the wiper stalk down to the second position and they will move to an upright position so that you can lift them away from the windscreen

I've owned 3 Boxsters and I would buy another one over the Alpine. The Alpine is cool because its not in America for sale, but the Boxster is still a Porsche.

When I worked with Lotus a decade go, I know a lot of the design guys left for Caterham and were contracted to work on the A110. That might explain the “feel” and the lightness. A great car clearly!
@PetrolPed2 жыл бұрын
Interesting and yes…lovely feel 👌
@chucku002 жыл бұрын
Catheram contract was cancelled very early in the A110 conception. Way more than Caterham because they couldn't carry the project, the real author of the feel and lightness is David Twohig (at the time an in-house Renault engineer) who made the main choices about the A110 definition with Carlos Tavares (former vice-CEO of Renault at the time, nowadays the CEO of Stellantis) who enthusiastically supported the project. But don't take my word for it : kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6Kod2avrLx1oJY

Decent review, but I would of liked more about the build quality. You can't get your race suit, gloves, boots and helmet in the Alpine?

Very helpful especially luggage ans seats; I am slim but back shape might be a problem in those nice looking seats. Interested interior is quality! My 6 cylinder Boxster is a manual, and even after driving an LP560 Lambourghini and a 458 at Goodwood this week, I am not convinced about Paddleshift.

The legende/gt has 6 way adjustable seats. The wipers go to the top position for cleaning or changing blades if you put the wiper control to the fast position with the engine off. I’d test the GT against the cayman.

Also I sprint and track day mine and can get 2 helmets, boots, suit, gloves and extra kit into the boot. You do need to put the helmets in individually and pick a soft bag for the rest of the kit, but a little imagination goes a long way. Not opening the front boot on a button is quite annoying.

Great Review Pete. As a french car is it plagued with the usual quality control issues - un reliable and electrical problems that french cars have been known for, Renault in Aus is not proving to be very reliable.

Interesting that you obviously like the interior on the A110. It suits me just fine too, but often comes in for some criticism because of the obvious use of Renault bits here and there. You make a fair point about charging for aluminium pedals etc - it does seem mean. However it's fair to point out that Porsches are far worse in that regard. The A110 comes with LED headlights, DCT, keyless entry and climate control as standard - all expensive options on a Cayster. The luggage arrangements are, without doubt, not the most convenient - but as others have pointed out, pack using the best use of space and you can get enough in for a couple of weeks or more away. The total space is 196 litres (the rear boot is actually the bigger of the two!) (plus the space behind the seats) - considerably more than (say) an MX5 an S2000 and quite a few others. The Boxster, and even more so the Cayman, are easily the best in class in that regard. I've never found the luggage space an issue in the A110 - interior storage, on the other hand, is abysmal as standard (though fortunately quite easily fixable)

Nice just needs the rally lights up front (yellow of course) and blue paint.
