I'm 6' 4" and whilst it's snug I can do 500 plus at one sitting comfortably. I've only ever seen one other on the road, it just feels so special. I have an A110. Best car I’ve owned. I’ve also had many 911’s inc 2x GT3RS. I’ve been lucky and had 4 Ferraris and a McLaren. A110 gives a far more enjoyable and attainable drive. Another bonus is that I have yet to be raped by the dealers for a service. Add the Life 110 geometry alterations (a free download and roughly £100 to do at your local garage) and add the larger Life 110 paddles, these minor changes make the car even better. You are welcome to try mine James.

Interesting comment, I've owned a lot of good cars (+20 Porsche) and did five seasons of Carrera cup, currently own a 991.2 GT3 RS, 296 GTB, 600 LT (in BC), 720S and 981 GTS - I thought the Alpine was OK in the twisties not outstanding and let down by a poor engine and gear box. There is literally no comparison to something like a GT3 RS. Its nimble, but so is a Cayman and the Cayman 981 onwards has a far, far better engine (even the turbos are way better e.g 420Nm - 380Nm Vs 340Nm) and gearbox and is a much more liveable real world sports car with far better fit and finish. Personally, I couldn't get my hear around the Alpine price point and why do the R, it simply gets destroyed by real track capable road cars. The bottom line is the Alpine was let down by overemphasis on weight loss rather than being a sum of the parts superstar.

@@VK6AB- Nah, had similar cars to you (although not Porsches as I don't like them) and find the A110 one of the best cars to drive. On the track the bigger BHP stuff will muller it, but if you wanna do track stuff, buy a track car.

Really well put together and very good reasoning. I'm driving a A110 Legende since a few months (which is now known as the GT). The 252hp and a bit more outdated infotainment system are the only real differences. Took on business trips, family visit, normal commute with traffic and many "long-way home" trips. When I test drove one I was sold in 15minutes - its not annoying at all to drive on the highway, in the city, etc. and it has the comfort features for it (it even has a rain sensor and heated seats!). Its even really fuel efficient on long trips. Find some curves and the joy starts; don't worry too much about potholes and (speed)bumps, its fun even at legal speeds, you feel the car rotate around you, etc. A sportscar that doesn't scare you but gives you fun instead.

I drove the A110 GT and it was fabulous. Flattering, even. Very quick at speed. You sit lower in the GT than in the regular one. It has the same suspension set up but the more powerful engine of the S, and 24mm larger brakes F/R, and parking sensors and a reversing cam. I thought the 4 cylinder engine would be too little excitement, but in sport mode it sounded better than I expected. The sound system you mention is incredibly light, which is an achievement in and of itself, and there's an optional additional sub in the GT. The Atelier color range is quite stunning, too. I think it's indicative that both Gordon Murray and James May have selected the A110 as the car to buy out of all the choice available today.

I'm a serial offender with Alpines, this is my fourth and I still have 1300S Berlinette - so I won't give a fully un-biased point of view. That's a well rounded summary - well done (I don't care about the front boot catch - but it is a ball-ache). Mine has done 42000 miles, cheap to service and run. If you step back from the joyful driving on quicker days, the basic day to day - leave it in 'normal' and fully auto and it's so easy to pootle in traffic too and that is truly part of the magic, it is a car you can live with. Performance-wise it's a little belter. Earlier this year I took it to the Castle Combe Magic Day where you can give young drivers runs around (or even let them drive). Even in the company of some Lambos and McLarens - every single person who went in the Alp rated it best car they had been in. One lad (smart enough and old enough to judge) who's dad had just bought a 911 - declared 'I'm telling dad he bought the wrong car - the Porsche can't react as quickly with so little steering movement'

You can have the seat adjusted in hight, as it has three settings, but you need to have this done by the dealer; I do not enjoy fast motorway trips, as it is rather noisy at 200+ speeds (Germany); my wife does not like the little boot space (100 litre front plus 100 litre rear) and the infotainment system is outdated and stupid. It is the cheapest car in running cost I have and have had in many years, maintenance, dutch road tax, fuel consumption, insurance, tyres. On B-roads it has no competition at all! Acceleration 4.5 to 100kph always thrilling and light, responsive, immediate steering and excellent gearbox make it a treasured little pocket rocket.

Owning this car I mostly agree with you. The car feels like a mature lotus without realistic compromises, except for seat adjustment. Pure edition is the best option since it is a true B road fighter, with the sabelt seats standard. I haven't bothered with advanced stereo and heated seats (40Kg more at least).. Front trunk opening is not such a struggle and generally, space is really good for a weekly trip. I dont agree about the engine. 1.8 fits well for tax purposes in many countries, it is lighter and sounds ok for the caliber of such a car. Balance and driving dynamics are exactly as presented. Quarks: 1. Battery, windows don't function if the engine is switched off, some crackles but not annoying as in an elise/evora, keyless entry (This is the main most annoying thing in the car). S edition is so stiff that doesnt make any sense in real world. Exhaust sound can be improved but works well as it is during long trips. Recommended options: sport exhaust (if no goal for aftermarket), fuchs wheels, 320mm brakes.

I just didn't miss much of the lack of power claimed in the review and in fact the difference in performance between the 252 and the 300 hp is significantly smaller than you might think BUT, the S is a better option due to its better chassis setup with special mention to the suspension springs and stability bars that, in the S, are much lighter and stiffer. That makes the car much more stable in the high speed braking and allow the A110 a better traction exiting the turns with an overall feeling of better driving confidence and agility. I also agree about the poor quality of some of the controls: I can survive the climate controls even when are the same of an old Clio but I absolutely hate the volume satellite behind the wheel which disturbs the intuitive and quick handling of the gearbox levers. All these details however are forgivable in my opinion: this is not a family car or a comfy SUV, the car is all about driving experience and feeling and that is close to unbeatable. You always feel safe and in control thanks to the superb chassis and the very well tuned passive suspensions. Thumbs up for Alpine in that respect. Not neglect able either, although it's a personal opinion, the fact that you are not driving a car anyone can see on the roads every day and as you say: you make a lot of friends when you are in a gas station. Porsche Cayman or Alpine? As much as I praise Porsche's quality I've chosen the Alpine over a base Cayman and even over a Cayman S. The A110 is not 200 kg but over 300 kg lighter than the Cayman and, even when less powerful, its lightness delivers a unique driving experience. Again a thumbs up for your accurate comparison: the A110 is in between an Elise and a Cayman and is the choice to go for if you are not into brand-driven purchase neither you want to cope with the spartan life on board of an Elise. All in all the best/most honest review I've watched about this fantastic car.

Happy to be owning an A110 GT as my daily driver. It is such a rewarding car . And I can agree with what you say. Last time I washed it a Mercedes Benz engineer (who pulled up in a beautiful 1st gen E Class Coupé) came up and complimented me on the car of which he had only ever seen two In real life. We started talking and he said: „when I got together with my old colleagues we said that they (Mercedes) should have built a car like this in the past.“ Light, focused, small. He said I should keep it for as long as I can. That’s my plan. Although I can understand that for right hand drive the frunk release is painful. Oh and you cen get longer shift paddles from Life 110 or MP Rezeau.

I'm the proud owner of an A110 GT since last April, and I LOVE this car. It offers pure and unfiltered driving pleasure, and can be used easily as a daily driver. I got a GT rather than an "S" because I want to drive it on long road trips throughout Europe; the first one coming up in December. The engine is indeed "just" a 1.8 liter fourcylinder, but it does its job more than adequately. Quite powerful for its size (300 HP and 340 Nm), sounds quite okay and is very economical when driven within the speed limits (7 liter/100 km or 40 MPG). The lack of storing space is not really a showstopper. My sales guy said that I should pack as if I go on holiday with a motorbike, and I'll be fine. So overall conclusion: it is an absolute dream to drive and own. Nothing comes even close! It is really sad to know that one day this kind of cars will stop to exist.

Great video as always! Thank you so much for making them. One thing about the engine: as you know the car should be as light as possible and is designed with the spirit of those old and great rallycars in mind. Light and nimble rallycars also use small engines with turbos so I am not as negative about the size of the engine. Also for public roads it pulls more than enough in my opinion. But yes compared to the whole car if there is anything that could be a bit more exciting it could be the engine probably. All in all an excellent drivers car and I love the turbo inhaling soud it makes…

There have been a few issues over that time, i had a software bug that would turn off the engine whilst sitting in traffic, that was fixed by a software upgrade. The rubber surround for the rear window glass came away and had to be replaced. There were some more niggles with the early cars such as the windscreens cracking due to poor fitment, mine was replaced by the dealer before i bought it. Nice work as usual as you have given a great all-round summary of the A110's point of difference. As I have had mine for over 4 years I would like to make a few points from experience. Yes, the front boot opening is a pain but I have only reached for it less than a dozen times in the 4 years so it's hardly a biggie. I'm also a big fan of the stereo controls as they are far easier for me to use compared to stereo control buttons on a steering wheel. (That's from years of owning a Clio 3 200 RS), Most importantly, i have never owned a car that I could push with as much confidence and playfulness and I have owned 4 previous mid-engined cars + a couple of Lancia Integrale's. Above all, it's a sympathetic social car, not posh at all, that is a magnet to kids and adults to come and have a chat. Also, it has no competitor on twirly little mountain roads ; not even sport motorbikes. And many friendly machines raced me here, from Aston Martin 4WD to very fast thingies with only two wheels. As you mentioned, it is a class of its own… and, living on an island where Alpine doesn't exist and mine is the only one, therefore no one would fix it if it breaks but, yet, I wouldn't go for another car as this IS the funniest, happiest and most discreet/showing off car I've drove so far.

@Stevieboy1306642 жыл бұрын
@@coltr7561 it has an inferior suspension layout. With unequal length double wishbones front and rear the Alpine has matched geometry front and rear which means front and rear roll centres move similarly when cornering. In contrast the Alfa's different suspension geometry front and rear means the roll centres move differently (strut style suspension roll centre moves much more than unequal length double wishbone). Strut front and double wishbone rear or alternatively multilink suspension can work well together - Porsche 911 is a perfect example and sometimes it can work in the configuration the Alfa uses if the manufacturer commits to spending more/enough time on development - which Alfa didn't do. Hence, in reviews, the Alpine has been universally praised for its handling while the Alfa has been largely panned. It was improved slightly later but that's about it. Perhaps Alfa should have gone strut front, strut rear as in the Porsche Boxster/Cayman - another car whose handling is well regarded.

The reason why the A110 only has a DCT is because, the manual didnt fit in the chassis so it had to be re-enginered and the DCT in the Megane is a dry-clutch (?, Not sure, im saying this of my memory), and reviews of the Megane with the DCT were'nt great. So, Alpine, with its minimum budget, had to choose between either modify the Manual to fit, or make the DCT better. They choose the DCT (the correct choice, even if its not the more pretolhead option) and i made it a wet-clutch DCT.

Pretty much echoing what has already been said here but I also feel that this is pretty much the only new car at any price point that remotely interests me (ok so perhaps one of Gordon Murrays new cars would spark my interest). Between the Alpine and the GT86, which would you say is most fun to drive, and is there much in it? I realise the GT86 is a much cheaper car with less power and that torque dip, but with a manual transmission and a different engine configuration (boxer) and position (front), the answer isn't necessarily obvious.
@tomspanyol55322 жыл бұрын
@@standandeliver8376 it's a very interesting question. I liked the idea of the Alpine when it first came out, but couldn't see past the lack of manual gearbox. A key reason I test drove the Alpine recently was that I had suffered an Achilles injury that meant I wasn't able to drive manual for a few months. It's different to manual, but satisfying in it's own way. The Alpine is vastly superior to the GT86 in terms of dynamics and also shove. Although "only" 50ish BHP more, the 150kg-ish less weight also plays a part and it feels MUCH faster than the GT86. I prefer the steering feel and general balance of the Alpine also. As mentioned, I borrowed an Alpine and took it to North Wales last week (put about 800 miles on it in 3 days). We had planned a route on some testing roads and I was with friends with much more powerful cars (M3/M4 Nissan GTR etc). Day 1 was wet and I could easily keep up with everyone when pushing - it's an easy car to get comfortable with driving briskly. Day 2 was dry, and whilst I could see the horsepower difference on straights, the size of the Alpine and handling meant again I could easily keep up with others when pushing. I had the GT86 for just over 3 years (from 2012) - really enjoyed it but always ached for a bit more shove and the gearbox isn't brilliant, change into second was always a bit notchy (in a bad way) and didn't feel like it liked to be hurried. I swapped it for a BMW M2 in 2016 (also manual) - lovely car, but dynamically preferred the GT86. Added a Caterham to the collection also and after a while sold the M2 on to get a VW Camper (totally different!). I did try the M2 Competition with the DCT gearbox before getting rid of my M2, although some of the updates were nice the reduced noise (particulate filter) meant that I wasn't keen to upgrade. After a couple of years of Caterham ownership (great fun, lots of trackdays) I found myself using that less and less on the road so sold it on this April when I realised I had done less than 1,000 miles in it's last year (I had a Superlight R400 so 210 bhp in a 500ish kg vehicle - as I've got older my desire to wring it's neck on public roads diminished). Then got injured and couldn't drive manual and tested an Alpine in August - loved it and bought it! Delivery end November/early December. Not sure if that really answers your question, but explains how I ended up where I am, in summary if it is the gearbox that is putting you off - give it a try. No harm in taking a test drive!

@@tomspanyol5532 Thank you for the detailed reply. I must admit that although I'd love an Alpine (it's basically my dream car), I can't really afford one in real terms. A GT86 is financially a more realistic proposition, so it's interesting to hear your perspective, especially as you are a past Caterham owner. Have fun with the Alpine when it arrives!
