Chad - For a guy stuck in WI, your moto vids are a treat. I often watch them while I'm passing time on the treadmill. One time you got close the edge and I fell off. Probably a tell-tale sign I should not attempt what you have done here. ;) That said, I often ponder what you brought along on these rides for tending to flat tires. Any info appreciated. Hope this note finds you well on a snowy WI day. Best, Michael

Hey dude. Those "mountain thing"s are called marmots. Kind of like a mountain ground hog. Nice vid and good commentary "This ain't no trail!" Haha, hillarious. I watched all your vids before taking my 2018 ATAS out there for my fist ADV ride a month ago. I ended up doing most of what you did including Black Bear. I don't understand why people go so slow down the steps. That seems a lot more terrifying than just flying through like I did. No vid though, just happy memories.

I really appreciate this type of video because i cant be out there myself at this point in life. Things are shaping up, i may get a bit more riding before im too old. I used to go exploring back country Pennsylvania on a Honda XL350. There were no go pros or cell phones then 😁
@stephenl93814 жыл бұрын
ujmrider WOW. Haven’t heard of XL 350 in decades! Had 2 in the early 70’s. Twin cylinders with beautiful exhaust styling. Added an extra long seat on one of them and could carry 2 passengers. Not much suspension, but good low center of gravity. Rode mine for years on/off in S. Louisiana. Cam chain roller tensioning problems. killed them both. Replaced by XL250, then XL500 and finally the XR650L. Bad eye, bad leg, greatest memories!

Love seeing an XR650L put through its paces. Though, I do worry after seeing your Telluride video how close you keep getting to the cliffside of these trails. I know on dualsports there’s only so many choices for tires that can’t cut it in the mud, loose soil, or slick rocks, but there has to be an alternative (maybe going tubeless and reducing tire pressure once you hit the dirt). A steeper rear sprocket (just a few more teeth) could also help on those high altitude trails compared to finding a fuel injection kit or Edelbrock carb.
@DB-fn3fz2 жыл бұрын
They sell FI kits for the XR650L? And what kind of differences does the Edelbrock carb offer? Asking because I'm planning a build.

Hi I love this video. Thank you for sharing. I’m 6’3” tall and weigh 224 pounds. I’m considering this bike. Some say it’s a bit on the heavy side. I would like your take on it. I really like this bike. Any information you can give me will be much appreciated. Thanks
@TS-mo6pn4 жыл бұрын
I realize 8 months is a bit long to wait for a reply, but... I bought my XR650L new in 2001 because I wanted to a dual-sport without spending a lot of money. There are used 650Ls all over the place, and model year doesn't matter much as the bike is essentially unchanged since 1994. I'm 5'11'' and 175 pounds, so the bike fits me pretty well, but I did lower the suspension an inch to improve cornering. I'm guessing with your height and weight you will find the stock suspension settings okay. You may even find the bike feels a bit small. I thought about adding handlebar risers to make standing on the pegs more comfortable, but decided against it because I am too cheap to replace all the cables and wiring. Yes, it is heavy, more importantly off-road, it is top heavy. I've taken about 20 pounds of weight off my bike by getting rid of the smog stuff and turn signals, but it is still way top heavy. Good low and medium range torque. On road it is a decent performer, not great acceleration but okay. Off road it is really too top heavy to do any serious single-track when the going gets gnarly. On dirt roads it is pretty good, although a little spooky at anything over 45 mph, again, the top-heaviness just makes the bike feel less than comfortable when the rear end breaks loose around corners. I'm currently running Metzeler Uni-Cross tires which provide great mud traction, but don't help much with the spooky-at-speed feeling and are mediocre on-road. I've also run Bridgestone Trail Wing and Metzeler Sahara tires, both of which are a good on-off road compromise. Why have I kept the bike for almost 20 years? Because it meets my requirement of decent on and off road performance, is very reliable, and I don't feel like shelling out $14,000 for a KTM 790 Adventure.

@chadgoff48786 жыл бұрын
The tank is great. I love the range approx 225miles. I am not a fan of the mounting but it works. My hand guards do hit the tank before full lock. Bar risers would take care of this.

There is a better way to get a guy in a jeep not paying attention to those behind him. If that bike is still running stock jets from the factory it is running lean already and better for higher elevations where it needs to run lean. It should do better in higher elevations than getting closer to sea level where it will need more fuel. I would carry a screw driver where I can adjust it for different elevations on a trip like your on. Almost looks like Engineer's pass in Co. I'm sure glad you are bringing enough gas for when you get lost you still have enough to find a town with some gas or you had better have some good survival skills and equipment with you to stay in the woods for a while, because you look to me like you're about to get lost a time or two. Ah ha I found you: www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS808US808&sxsrf=ALeKk03zL4TjA_T6NO74EPtoyf6IY-LZzA%3A1582308317094&ei=3RtQXpqKBYje-gT135WgBA&q=Alpine+Loop&oq=Alpine+Loop+Co.&gs_l=psy-ab.3...0.0..133...0.0..0.259.259.2-1......0......gws-wiz.5vd-UBwQebY&ved=0ahUKEwja7KjpnePnAhUIr54KHfVvBUQQ4dUDCAs&uact=5, I hope you brought a map and a compass with you. My dad always told me that if you ever get lost in those mountains, have a gun with you so you can hunt for food, a fishing pole and hooks and you can always find bait under rocks and always follow the stream downhill and you will always find a town eventually. Also take a knife and a saw or hatchet to make a lean too or some cover and a fire with flint or wood spinning tool and a piece of leather or show laces. But learn to survive in the woods first before you get lost in the mountains above timber line. Where did all that water come from? Off those mountains, that white stuff on top of them, it runs off the sides of them down onto the roadways and right on across into the next valley and turn into rivers, my young man. Those little varmints are prairie dogs most likely and if your stuck out there is the countryside with not eats, there not bad, I would imagine if one was hungry enough.
