I've done a rebuild on a 12" alpine type r and it was a pain but I ordered new spiders and new coil and fixed it and sold is and made a buddy of mine super happy it was a 1st gen.

Subbed. Good vocabulary, precise, little rambling on but that's OK. I do that too. I saved my last Type R 12 that rocked and tore spider-to-cone connections wide open after I was playing 'er wide open in a "sealed" box that decided to blow apart with no warning. *sigh* If I ever recone it, I'll have the grand honour of rocking three subs at the same time, for the first time. The Type R 12 in a custom built (to fit allotted space) ported bandpass box, a Sundown SA-10 V1 in a prefab slot-port Amazon box that's been crossbraced internally and soaked in up to about 2 ounces of thin CA glue, And a Sundown SA-8 V3 in a sealed prefab box with stacked plywood baffles (mounting depth issues), inverted. Because...chrome magnet. Why wouldn't you? The SA-8 purchase was, I believe the very very last $60 Yard Sale item available from Sundown Audio, cuz the next day they were gone and they haven't been back since. So...that's how it is...that is how it be is. Truly. Memento mori, que sera sera, carpe diem, carpe noctem and most of all, caveat emptor. Mofo's be out jackin' fools for real. Don't be that fool.

Great vid bro, looking for some blown Alpine’s Type-Xs I can recone myself, heard they use diff size spiders but up for a challenge and to learn. Really dig the salvaging of all the stock Alpine parts, I much prefer that as well, not really into mixing baskets/surrounds, etc like most do.

Thanks!! Several times I’ve bought the closest spider size slightly larger and just trimmed the outside edge down until the replacements fit the seat. Type X are significantly more difficult than type R. The type x has a plastic truss style cone that you cannot use solvent on and limited heating. That Makes breakdown extremely difficult

Mr. M thank you for your informative videos man, def giving us the motivation needed to rebuild these bad boys! Question.. would you recommend doing a full rebuild on the 12’s with new cone and dust cap? Or keep the stock look and just do spiders and coil? I see Springfield has the coil replacement kit. I’ve got mine all tore down, only thing is I don’t know what to use to separate the coil from the cone, I’ve used goo gone professional strength, just not sure if that’s safe to do for this.

ahh… ca glue is a nightmare. i’ve got a video on removing fried coils, i torch the former (from the inside) until the glue starts smoking. usually will just fall off after you go all the way around. alternatively i use a soldering iron to burn the CA. use eye protection and do in well ventilated space… the smoke is real bad… i try to re-use whatever i can to mitigate cost and maintain OEM. i’ve done a couple full replacement that turned out really nice… it’s all about what you are trying to achieve i guess… i’ve never used a springfield kit. their coils are good but more expensive than lord of bass

Can an Audiopipe 12in. Txx blue eye candy be re built? Or do they sell a drop in kit for them anywhere? Don't need to be the blue aluminum look either. The dust cover sperated from the coil but coil still works. Will not throw out even if I can't fix. Brother gave it to me before he passed and Im looking to bring back some memories. Normally I would use lord of bass but their formers are too short for 15’s… I got the one for the 15 from fixmyspeaker

I have a 12 inch Alpine type s the plastic around the spider is lose and it make a popping noise is there a way to tighten it up?

loose on the basket? if the spider ring is lifting, you just need to tighten the 5 bolts that hold it to the basket.

Thanks for replying but it didn't have any bolts it was glued down believe it or not and had came lose I took it apart and epoxy it and it's working fine now.

I have a Type R that makes noise when I turn on the power. I thought it might be the defective coil, but it doesn't scrape. Could there be a problem with the cone or the spiders? Have you ever seen anything similar?

there are lots of potential causes of noise. can you describe it for me?

@@MrM_Full-Send It makes a noise, as if there was some plastic or something loose inside it. The coil doesn't scrape, I don't think that's the problem

@@GabrielFlorian-hn6nr there are a couple possible places. it would be unusual but the spider flange could be rattling against the basket...or Less of a plastic sound but common with type r, the surround sometimes separates from the basket.

@@GabrielFlorian-hn6nr before you pull it apart. free air test it with a sine wave, if you can then try to locate the source. sometimes you don’t need to do a complete breakdown. could save yourself some work

@@zenlifeserenesoundsforrela1266 you need to bend the cone away slightly so you can get an exacto knife blade to the glue. There is a high risk of failure due to either over bending the cone subsequently weakening it or potentially cutting through it. If done properly the blade can be moved around the dust cap cutting all of the glue. Gently applying heat can help considerably

SWR15? They are possible to rebuild. I got the voice coil from fixmyspeaker.com and everything else from lord of bass

One time I put some blue tape on a black coil to mark it where I didn't have a silver sharpie to set the depth and I for got to remove it so I get the spider all glued down and I see some blue tape peeking out and I used way more tape than I needed, so I get that instant regret feeling weighing my options of prob be ok it'll stink for a bit yada yada but I couldn't leave it in there. It was a sundown tooled frame so there was no good access to the coil and it was 7 slugs so really in there deep, but Fortunately I had drilled some pretty big gap vents and with a pick and an hour I got it all out... Felt pretty dumb.

The dust cap? There is just a bead of e-6000 around the perimeter. I ran the beed of glue then dropped the dust cap onto the cone and put a weight on it for 24 hrs

I was thinking to just mail in cones with coil attached and let u do your majic. Save money on shipping since don't got to send basket's

Depends on what needs to be done. If it’s just a voice coil I could probably do one for under 100cnd if it’s a full soft parts replacement it would be 175cdn. That being said I cannot get certain parts right now so full softpart replacement will be slow until parts are back in stock.

Thanks for posting this video. I have two swr 1522s that I just tore down. I would really like to do a custom rebuild on these, not sure what to do about the spider situation though, mine have cracks and are very brittle so not sure how Im going to go about installing new spiders since it has that goofy spider spacer ring. Other than that, it seems like using standard softparts on these would not be a problem. I know psi has built a set of these 15s before and they said they built a custom spider ring in the listing (they also went with a single spider) , im just hesitant to start buying parts because this is my first custom rebuild, ive always reconed using drop in kits. Anyways, sorry for the long winded post, but glad to see someone out there keeping these subs in service. I loved mine and used them for many years, and was at least the third owner of my set.

The last 3 type r 10’s I did were full custom with new everything. I had to trim the outside of the spiders down to seat in the ring flange or whatever it’s called. Also custom leads to align with the push terminals. I posted a video “the triplets”

@@MrM_Full-Send are these the 2 or the 2.58 inch coil model (the tens). Mine have the 2.58s which supposedly lord of bass and springfield speaker have direct replacements for. Did these end up not fitting in your application. Im not sure about winding a coil, thats probably too advanced for me. Sorry for all the questions but really do appreciate the responses ive been wanting to put these subs back in service for years

@@woofervision673 the ones I made are for the older series 2” ones. I’ve used many of the 2.58” from LofB as well as a few from Springfield. The only issue is the pigtails are on opposite sides so you need to wrap the pigtails around the former to reach the leads

Well that’s certainly an option. Also need to consider people’s budget. To rebuild This one, it cost less than half of what a new sub of the same performance would cost… it’s often cheaper to recone than replace. Kinda like buying a new car because it got a flat tire. This is an obvious exaggeration but you get the idea. Normally, for myself anyways, I run custom subs designed and built by me to preform according to my goals.
