Yeah, I feel like these demographic genres have sorta lost their meaning a little bit. The lines get blurred a lot between shounen, seinen, shoujo and josei nowadays. CSM really doesnt feel like any classic shounen. I would definitely categorize it as a seinen, personally.

The greatest thing they did was making Pochita the single most cutest thing ever. I want one of those life sized plushies so bad and the nedroid. The worst thing is how long it'll take between seasons. I think people will be somewhat disappointed with season one but later seasons will blow this all away. If anything this first episode managed to rekindle in me what I came to see in Tokyo Ghoul. A gritty dark fantasy tradegy with an MC too kind for his world, beaten down by life unfairly, yet he still moves foreward. „The most innocent person burdened unfairly with the greatest punishment still doesnt back down, but rises up to the challenge inspite of the suffering“ is an archetypal classic. No wonder it easily resonates, because everyone can relate to unfair burdens, confronting that is part of adulthood. Youre probably right about this being a seinen thing, in contrast to shonen. This story doesnt seem to be about growing up, but confronting life in its dark fascettes. Great reaction, keep it up. Ill be back for more next week 😌.

What I especially like about this episode is that they made a good job highlighting what tragic of a life Denji is living at the beginning. Really emotional and effed up. And I agree about the voice acting, they actually told all VAs to make it "less anime" and more natural. If you’re a fan of JJK your going to be a fan of this. Both authors of JJK and CSM are huge fans of each other’s work. Both mangas are regarded 2/3rds of what is called the “trio’s of dark shonen” or “Hell’s trio of manga” along with Hell’s Paradise as the 3rd and will be coming out later. I’m a fan of all 3 and I really liked this first episode of CSM.

Been a huge fan of the manga for about two years now(BOLDcast too!) and it's so surreal that everyone on the internet knows about it now. New chapters of the manga have also been dropping on Tuesdays, so manga readers are FEASTING. really really hoping a cour 2 is coming relatively soon. 19:19 SO happy you realized that about denji. I think a lot of the detractors miss a lot of that kind of stuff along the way, really excited for future discussion. 20:14 Funny thing is, Chainsaw Man IS shounen. It ran in weekly shounen jump alongside mha, one piece, jjk, etc. which is wild considering some of the content of the manga. It's so popular because it stands out from its shounen contemporaries. I think if you guys really enjoyed this episode, there's not too much to worry about with the overhype, it's super consistent and only gets better. It's basically just up to MAPPA to nail it. Also please beware spoilers, csm has a rabid fanbase, some snobs, and a lot of memes.

Yes, as JJK is a feel good anime, CM is a feel bad anime, very similar but heavy on the tragedy. The gore is well contained, because is clearly Tarantino-like eccessive. Without too many explanations that will be given later, I want to point out another difference with JJK: Yuji fights, for example, a devil tomato. Denji fought the tomato devil.

I feel the need to say that Makima anime vs manga is presented a little different. I won't say it because I feel like it's a little intentional but I got completely different feelings when Makima showed up. Character design is definitely a lot more grounded but again I saw something different in the manga. It's in good part due to her facial expressions, eyes in particular. It should go without saying but I'm just talking about scene for scene manga to anime what's already shown.

The number of chapters covered will likely depend on the content of the chapters, but based on the number of pages they covered in the first episode and from characters that are shown in the OP, it seem like the remaining 11 episodes will cover 2-3 chapters each.

Seems like if the current pacing holds we'll end this season around chapter 29-30 with the introduction of Kishibe, which is a great place to leave off.

It's not CG its rotoscoped that is why it doesn't suck.... basically they used a CG model to trace movements over when animating so they could get placement and angles correct...so it end sup being like CG with a hand drawn pass.

It's supposed to be a shônen actually. The Jump changed its target demographic afterwards, but it was mostly because they wanted to avoid publishing too much adult scenes. But the story was written to be a shônen.
