One thing that a lot of “reactor” say about Chainsaw Man is that Denji is a “shallow,clown, stupid...” protagonist. This seems baffling to me because it’s made apparently obvious how all of Denji’s horniness and seeming lack of emotion is due to how utterly inexperienced he is in dealing with complex emotions and forming relationships because of how messed up his upbringing is. All his “shallow” moments always have some sort of deeper subtext to them.

No, the Divine Comedy is Dante’s book where the inferno is (there’s also purgatory and paradise). And the book is entirely textual, the illustrations are lithographies from Gustave Doré. This is one of many illustrations for hell/inferno of a devil punishing a sinner. It’s also in the background of the first shot of the opening when Denji pulls his ripcord! And while this illustration is exclusive to the anime, it’s an homage to another one of Doré illustrations that is showed much later even in the manga (not a spoiler, it’s just there as a painting on a wall)

The painting in her office is from Dante's Inferno (Canto 22) depicting the devil Alichino in the 5th ditch of the 8th circle of hell. That part of hell has a boiling tar pit to punish "grafters" or people who use their position of power for personal gain (like embezzlement). If any sinners stay on the surface of the pit too long, devils grab em and stab em a lot. A sinner (who embezzled a lord they served) is trying to escape back into the boiling tar pit after devils grabbed him. FWIW he's able to get in; the devils get mad, fight with each other, and end up stuck in the tar pit themselves.

For the udon part of the episode, they didn't cover it. I was only hoping for the episode to end with Power being introduced. But in the manga, before Denji gets to eat his udon, (I don't remember much but) a little girl reports to the devil hunters of a devil in the woods and Denji is told by Makima to go kill it before eating his udon noodles. When Denji and the little girl are in the woods, the little girl turns out to be the devil in disguise, luring Denji to eat him. He kills it as it takes the form of the little girl again and returns with his udon being now soggy since it's being a while and THEN eats it. I read the manga in color, but Power's hair is pinkish red in the colored manga, which made us get hot down there. Also nobody noticed, but the soundtrack playing when Aki & Denji were walking in the sunset scene, is the final version of the music playing from the very first Chainsaw Man Trailer of when they were showing the trio eating together in the apartment.

Noice video, I always enjoy listening to you guys dissect the episode at the end. Other than the one scene with Denji saving a kid and being willing to befriend another devil being getting cut out, this episode was fairly accurate to the manga. My two cents for Denji's motivations are that it makes sense for his character to have them due to his age and lack of any kind of love being shown towards him. I've interpreted his motivations as him seeking physical affection since he's never been shown any, but since he has no knowledge on the topic he just equates it with something dirty. That being said as much as these motivations make sense for his character due to his background, these same motivations would make any other character come off as bland to me.
