I love how this show just goes completely in the face of what normal expectation would be. Normally, if you see a giant zombie creature you'd be the one screaming in terror. Here, the zombie screams in terror. It's pure wish fulfillment, in a way - evil screams and runs in terror of you, not the other way around.

Denji is pretty much the antithesis of the typical shonen protagonist, and one of the major reasons people gravitate towards csm including me. Denji isn't some force of good, some overly kind hero of justice and a strong moral he's not on some revenge journey or to become the strongest devil hunter or the king of devils. He's the product of the world around him and the life he's lived, the bad, the worse, and the worst.

"Ripcord" - I was actually surprised that you guys did not reference the mothers heart disease after Pochita sacrificed himself to be his heart. @zeemod1556
@zeemod1556 Жыл бұрын
Ripcord Tatsuki Fujimoto is a huge film buff and he loves to remind you by having two page spreads in his manga that resemble famous movie scenes/posters. The OP's director clearly payed service to that love by incorporating many famous movie scenes/shots into it. They're blink-and-you-miss-it moments and some are very hard to recognize. What's wonderful is the way these shots blend perfecly into the OP's non-movie reference shots and somehow fits right in to tone and rhythm of what the OP is going for without really feeling like references. This will also make more sense once you meet the rest of the cast. The movie references that I was able to find: Texas Chainsaw Massacre (because of course), The Big Lebowski, Pulp Fiction, No Country for Old Men, Constantine, Attack of the Killer Tomatos, Jacob's Ladder, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, as well as Japanese Horror Film "Don't Look Up" and Sadako vs Kayako (basically Japn's Freddy vs Jason [AKA] The Ring vs The Grudge)

Ripcord! I really liked the way “dog” was used in this episode “Dog and Chainsaw.” We have Denji being called a “dog” by the yakuza and treated like dirt, just being forced to do anything. A kicked dog. Then we have the relationship between Pochita and Denji in which Pochita is Denji’s literal dog, but in a more “a dog is a (chainsaw)man’s best friend” way. A pet dog. Then at the end, when Denji is found by the devil hunters with Public Safety, he seems out of place and kind scared of his new freedom like you said. When the woman comes up and hugs him and says she’ll feed him, it almost seems like Denji is a stray dog. Really cool episode! Looking forward to more reactions and discussions!

[ *Ripcord* ] [ *Spoiler Free* ] The OP is just absolutely brilliant. It just a lovely tribute to the manga absurd humor and Tatsuki Fujimoto (the mangaka) loves for cinema. Shingo Yamashita may known for his knack directing OP that look clean and smooth (Naruto OP13, JJK OP1-2, ROK OP2), but he clearly outdone himself here. Felt like the entire team just having fun in 90 seconds with all the movie reference and silly thing happening on the screen Also pretty surprise at how cinematic the first episode is. Almost felt like it being shot by a real camera. Denji meeting Pochita scene is just beautifully shot. Ryu Nakayama have prove himself a worthy director for this series. He gonna have quite a resume for this to be his debut series on main director chair. Edit: Oh the cinema thing gonna be a common occurrence in this series. I mean the reason why all the Public Safety people wear suit is because Fujimoto love Resevoir Dogs. Its not a Fujimoto story without a cinema scene.

I think it's pretty interesting to have a protagonist basically have his dream kinda come true within the first few episodes, from Makima basically promising the food related half of his dream come true at the end of this episode. By the simple nature of his dream, do you think he'll get a new dream soon that isn't just "eat well and score with a girl" and is an evolution of his simple dream? Adding onto the subversion of the "Deal with the Devil" trope, the two deals Denji makes with Pochita are far better and mutually beneficial than the exploitative deals with the yakuza and the suspicious, condescending deal with the pink-haired girl. I also really like the concept of a ripcord attached to Denji's heart. He literally has to get his heart and blood pumping for a fight.

Suspicious? Nahhhh. Look at her eyes, she's a perfectly trustworthy dommy mommy! Real talk though, Makima's questionable phrasing of it aside, it's basically the same as Gojo from JJK telling Yuji he can die now or die later. Denji, now that he's even slightly Devil, more than likely isn't allowed to keep living unless Makima can ensure he'll be kept in check. So he can either die, or let her "keep him". Like I said, questionable phrasing.

Ripcord Firstly, this is one of my favorite things I have read. Like ever. It's so simple yet complex at the same time. Denji is by far one of the best protagonist period because he's not here to save the world or to be the very best (like no one ever was). No, he just wants to live. I think the voice actor did a phenomenal job capturing that. His voice doesn't sound very anime (if that makes sense). Like the scream when he was getting stabbed felt like a real person screaming and that made my skin crawl. This next part is a bit of advice/warning to anyone who wants to see more about the series. Chainsaw man is a very spoiler-heavy story with its plot lines. If you guys, or anyone else here, want to learn a bit more about the story BE VERY CAREFUL. There was one KZbinr I watched who accidentally reacted to a manga trailer rather than an anime trailer. If you see any trailers that are animated manga panels, it's safer to just avoid it!

Also, Pochita's possession deal beats the heck out of Sukuna's from JJK, and Denji and Itadori NEED to hang out together and just befriend each other in that special "technically I think I'm supposed to kill you, but do you want to go hang out at the mall" kind of way. 😁

@@Skibbutz why though? Isn't it like vaguely explained/expressed in the finale in part 1? Spoiler: Isn't it like the revelation thing? opening of the past, like a sort the trigger for like a Dissociative Amnesia of some sort on a psychological standpoint from Denji's POV? Like what Makima said with "A child's mind is pretty interesting, everything bad can just be shut on a simple door" or something on that line. Doesn't the door kinda served like a personal protection from denji so that he can continue living his life thinking his a victim to all this and continue being ignorant and stuff? It's probably not like fully displayed but I think it was expressed very well or maybe that's just from my perspective reading it? I have re-read a couple of times and it's actually still so good seeing all these minor details from repeated dialogues from chapter to chapter and little hits about the character and deep thoughts between the lines and foreshadowing. Tatsuki Fujimoto is god tier in script making it's insane.

@@UFOinDisguise you'd think so but actually no. the door that opens to Denjis repressed memories is not the same door. The mystery door is consistantly drawn the entire series and nothing ever changes about how its drawn, from the first time it appears to the very last. The only exception to this is when Denji "opens" his door, its suddenly a completely different room and door, the door doesn't even open the right way. Then the next time the door appears, on the Makima volume cover, it's gone back to its original and consistant design. So the Denjis dad door is a completely separate door ment to mislead us from the actual mystery door which remains closed.

Okay, so first of all idk how to say this but I've always thought that you guys would be the best people to review/analyse a series like Chainsaw Man. The manga is absolutely amazing. At first glance, it just seems like a crazy and chaotic gorefest , which it definitely is, but it's so much more than that. The storytelling is so damn good. You never know what's gonna happen, it shocks and subverts expectations at each and every turn to the point that you simply accept that anything could happen at any point. The characters are great, the pacing is insane, the protagonist is different from anyone you've seen before, the antagonist is one of the best written I've read in recent years, even comparable to, dare I say, Johan from Monster, and NO ONE IS SAFE. But the reason I'm excited for you guys to experience this is because there's soooo much stuff below the surface that most people just never notice, which I'm sure you guys will definitely catch. There are deep hidden reasons for character motivations which at first look might seem shallow. There's symbolism, there's mythological inspiration and at the same time it's about a guy killing devils with chainsaws for arms and head lol. This is definitely gonna be a ride.

[Spoiler free] Ripcord The mangaka of Chainsawman, Tatsuki fujimoto, is actually friends with the mangaka for JJK, and they often bounce off eachothers works. Fujimoto once jokingly said that Chainsaw Man was a shameless ripoff of JJK. In a way, JJK and CSM are mirrors of eachother, both being shonen stories about a lovable dork with a monster inside him that both have a similar story structure to start with, but where JJK embraces the tropes of shonen, CSM flips them on it head and kicks them in the balls and completely goes off the rails.

“This is a world where body parts are more valuable.” It’s best not to take the content in the OP too seriously as more than 80% of it is simply movie references since Fujimoto, the mangaka, is a GIGANTIC cinephile. The movies the OP references being: “Reservoir Dogs,” “Pulp Fiction,” “Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” “Ghost Actress”, “Sadako vs Kayako,” “No Country For Old Men,” “Jacob’s Ladder,” “Thor Love and Thunder”, “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes,” “Constantine,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” and, most obviously, “the Big Lebowski.” So technically, this OP is spoiler free 😂

RIPCORD I'm sure someone else has pointed this out already, but the op has a lot of scenes that are homages to classic movies (too many to list but the bowling ball one is from Big Lebowski, for example) This is really cool because a one shot by the same author, Goodbye Eri, featured movies heavily and movies in general are a vital part to Tatsuki Fujimoto's artistic style watching chainsaw man with this movie inspiration in mind would probably only serve to enhance the experience (read his one shots btw, they are INCREDIBLE)
