So here’s what really killed Warmahordes: A major selling point was how they play tested the hell out of the new edition. And for 80% of the factions, it was. It was not for Skorne, or Trollbloods. While the latter had had a little taste of glory in competitive (usually getting nerfed after), Skorne was a near bottom feeder, easily the worst of the nine core factions. Most players were hoping for mid table. They sunk below Mercs, Minions, and Convergence. The Skorne Community on PP’s own forums were livid. PP’s response, on top of every other bad thing that you mentioned, was to kill the forums. This is what I think truly killed the game: scattering the community and implementing “no negativity” posting. Proof the community would be right would come six months later, when they got the first rules overhaul, and had had zero 1st-3rd place finishes (when everyone else had at least one). All this said, and while I would have preferred a AoS 1.0 style rules rewrite, I LOVE everything about this. Except the price. It’s fine. But I want to see GW’s model come down, and I think it’s about $50 too much for the starter and $40 too much for the add-on pack to pose a major threat to GW’s Top Spot.

Let's be honest, at this point pretty much nothing will ever take Games Workshop's top spot in terms of tabletop wargaming. They've been doing this for far too long and their various IP's have aspects that appeal to almost everyone in some form or another. Privateer Press coming in with a new edition and offering 3d printed miniatures certainly isn't going to be it. But I do wish PP the best of luck moving forward, and I hope that MkIV is a mega success for them. I really enjoy the Iron KIngdoms, and was a dedicated Warmachine player for a very, very long time. (And I do agree with you that PP's pricing on these sets is a bit too high; $200 is a BIG ask for a new edition when they've burned quite a few bridges in the past with both customers and retailers alike.

To help out with the "flat terrain" discussion. Privateer Press never embraced mousepad terrain, but the community used it extensively. All we did was take out the specific rule for Elevation mattering, much like GW did when they declared that hills are just part of the battlefield surface and not a piece of terrain. And we didn't even do that until recently, well after entire community ran tourneys were 100% flat.

Maybe a little bit late to the party here, but 16:30 talking about only some of the warjacks having arm-swap options; only new Mk IV releases are getting the new mechanics like the modular jacks and spell rack options. The Stryker is a Mk IV jack so it has the 64 possible loadouts, while the other unit cards are for legacy models. The plan is that new Armies will have just three Warcasters, two jacks, and a handful of units and solos and that's it, so basically _every_ Army is a Convergence of Cyriss style limited release. Meanwhile the Mk IV launch will also include two Armies for each faction built from the existing range that doesn't have all the new mechanics but does have a wider range of models to compensate, so the Stalker doesn't have weapon options but the Cryx Bane-themed army has five jacks available. And then, on top of that, there will be Cadre models that can be used by any Army that belongs to the same Faction as the Cadre, and that's where the Colossals, Gargantuans, and Battle Engines are eventually going to live. (And the Unlimited format exists where you can play anything that shares a Faction together, but they've flat out stated it won't be as well balanced.) I think it's a good compromise to allow existing players to continue using their collections while also not bogging themselves down with needing to balance every new thing against the entire range forever.
@braedzero81272 жыл бұрын
I'm a good bit biased in this situation because I play Ret and it's a faction that doesn't exist in the new time period, but I'm quite disappointed in the fact that existing models are being relegated to a separate format and that new rules like Command Cards and Warjack Customization aren't going to apply to legacy armies. I'll give mkIV a shot with the models I have, but I doubt I will stick with it. I'm very hesitant about buying any of the new models, as all new minis will be 3d printed, and they're charging quite the premium for the new kits
@Waywardpaladin2 жыл бұрын
There are still living elves outside of Ios, and the Dusk have the Dawnguard working with them. I am a bit afraid that they're going to go House as an army, the living as another army, and you'll only be able to mix one with the other through cadres. But Retribution will have some Prime armies too.

32:00 No they most certainly did _not_ trim down the number of stats, they actually _added_ three. A lot of models used to have Magic Ability (X) where X was how good they were at casting spells, that's been replaced by adding an Arcane Attack stat to MAT and RAT, and Warcasters also used to use the FOC stat to control how much Focus they had and how good they were at casting spells _and_ how far away Warjacks and Warbeasts could get from them, and now those are three different stats.

I was a Khador player who really Loved the Farrow, I remember getting up to some absolute nonsense back in the day with Butcher3, Rorsh, and Brine. People told my list was stupid, but 60% of the time it worked every time. B3 is basically an assassination machine, everyone knows, and everyone knows to bog him down as hard as you can, but with Rorsh, Brine, and a Battle Boar you have a secondary credible assassination vector with a similar deceptively long non-linear engagement range against all but the most sturdy of Warcasters/locks. It's more tenuous than Orsus Zaktovir's reputation, but fully buffed Brine is an absolute that that can pressure units off of objectives if you're setting up for it and youre prepared for your beasts to go Berserk on the next turn (Warmachine was resource management, Hordes was risk management). I wish more piggies were willing to work for the motherland, because I might have picked them up as a second faction.

We sharpened ourselves against and learned a lot, we didn't even change our lists, but his attention on Ruin and my use of it was actually the focus of our rivalry, and it paid off better for me because I was learning the best implementation of a model I was using, and he was learning a model that only I was playing in the local meta)

PP’s plan for Mk4 is designed to be very new player friendly and enticing. That being said, there’s little to bring existing players of previous versions into this edition. Their OP strategy is designed solely for the new armies. Yes, you might be able to bring in some older models but it’s mostly the new stuff. Yes, they will update to allow you to use existing models eventually but their primary mode of play is described by them as an anything goes arena akin to the Wild West. So if your collection is not going to be part of their new army building methodology, you’re effectively going back to third edition and playing with unbalanced broken…stuff. I had been playing since the game first came out but couldn’t take the insanity of trying to prepare for the massive number of gotcha moments coming at you. Their immense model bloat and addition of more and more rules made the game essentially unplayable. And now they’re telling us that that is our only option for OP. Umm, just no. And I agree that the pricing of their new starters and expansions is ridiculous. It’s the same issue with their sci-fi warcaster game. I like the designs, the rules look decent but the price is way too high. I wish them luck but they have a serious uphill road to climb and they seem to be throwing broken glass in their own path.

Honestly, the majority of people that I see are interested in MKIV are old players from MKII, myself included. These new rules are addressing most of the issues that a lot of old school players said was problematic (abusive spam lists, gotcha scenarios that your faction may have little to no answer, theme lists that provide such huge benefits that you have to take them; because if you don't build one but your opponent does, you're going to be too far behind the 8-ball to win, etc). I think the big issue they are going to face is convincing players who felt burned by MKIII to give it another shot

Of those 3-4-5-6 other people, if they had a small force or rotating schedule, the game wouldn't seem so dead. Also, the competition made GW get their collective baggage together. I got into Warmachine way back when it first launched all those years ago. Don't mention the number, my knees hurt enough as it is. It was definitely a breath of fresh air after years of 40k dominance, and watching the game grow and evolve over the years was a delight. Oddly enough, it wasn't the lack of painting that made me eventually step away from the game. Painting seems to be a lot more popular down here. No, it was the hardcore tournament players. As that side of the game took off, it became harder to find someone willing to play a more casual game. There's only so many times you can play against fully tested and tweaked lists, inevitably losing on the second or third turn because your brain isn't a battle computer that can estimate charge distances at a glance, before a game loses its shine. But hey, I'm pleased to see PP moving forward with Mk4. Blending the Warmachine and Hordes rules together makes sense. STL printing kits seems odd now, but will probably pay off in the long run, and including slots for magnets is a genius move.

Your experience with Warmachine is similar to mine--I drifted into Warhammer during the End Times because I was drawn to the dynamic narrative, and after spending weeks painting up my first army for my first Warmachine tournament I felt disappointed that I lost my games so fast and to opponent's armies which weren't even primed and even "missing arms"! But I'm excited at this news that Warmachine isn't gone.

Got yourself a new subscriber. Thank you so much for the more balanced and nuanced take on what PP is doing. I for one am very, very excited for MK4. The price point for the armies is, I think, just low enough for me to get one of my mates into it :) He absolutely couldn't before.

I payed Mk1 missed MK2 and came back for Mk3 I love the game I enjoyed the complexity of the game I'm just not sure of what MK4 will play like, some things I like some things I am unsure of so I go in with cautious optimism. I did love MK3 and when they did the dynamic update I thought it was even better. Never played on tournament level so I guess I never seen the issues other people had and complained about to merit a MK4.

Just found your channel. Seeing little what is being said about Warmachine. Haven't played in months and last I did was brawlmachine which I thought was great way to get new players at smaller points which we actually got new players in. I've played Warmachine/Hordes since early MK2. Personally my group and I liked/loved MK3 due that lot of rules were changed in good way but it did mess with some factions in bad ways like Skorne. I feel like the game found a balance finally even with the large amount of models for each faction. I liked that PP never devalued my army. I hope they still don't is my biggest concern going forward. I would like if they left MK3 available for those that may still want to play it if they want. But I understand why PP is doing what they are doing as a company. they got to make something for folks to buy and they have to make it where folks can easily pick it up and play and stores can carry it without the bloat of models. My local group are excited about these changes. Due to personal life challenges and too much stress, I'm not looking forward to learning new stuff. Perhap later when I have less stress. Or when I see my beloved Circle return. I may play Legacy since I have so much of their stuff.

I'm a bit sad. We played warmahordes since the very start of MK2, we played Mk3 a lot and on a regular bases, we baught new models, Evan black anchor models. We supported the company because they supported their models and made sure that you as a player could use all your models which you build and painted in many hours. And now they come along and tell us something about a prime and a legacy format. This sounds a lot like magic the gathering. I am afraid that at some point they will tell you "you can't use model x in prime anymore because what ever..." And we as a gaming group will not support this. We will stick to mk3 and we will not buy new models anymore.

Yeah man….. I started playing this game 4 months before legends came out. They had the minis world by the balls and squandered that all the whole GW was course correcting. I think the only way they’ll survive is bringing back pressgangers you can almost watch their numbers dip with direct correlation to when they removed pressgangers. They were the real reason this game became successful.

Storm legion models will no longer be immune to lightning, instead they will only be resistant to it. Check the rules and this means that instead of 2d6+ damage it's only 1d6+ damage. Which kinda sucks for screening an electro-leap gun with your models. But it's clear they're doing this because there will be so few army options at the beginning of mk4

I’m a 40k player tired of playing an un-fun game created by a company that does not care. I’m pumped for this edition. I’m new to War Machine and I’m all in. Please bring this to your channel.

You gloss over attacking your own models, but that was a really integral part of the game. I have a slow unit that can shoot after charging? Charge one of my own grunts to get it up the field faster or maybe just to get a model with a 5" move and a 5" base past a fence. There's a super high-defence model that I can't realistically hit with anything? Slam one of my own models into it to knock it down so it's easier to hit. My opponent has cleverly crippled one of my units with a spell so it's standing between a big damage dealer and an important target? Yeah, I'll cap a couple of my own models to get them out of the way. Heck, even just using the Push power attack to extend a big Warjack's threat range by an inch could win games. Being able to target you own models opened up a huge volume of tactical space.

I loved the models, and I loved the lore. However, I could never get into the game mechanics. If you can trust your opponent to roll their dice and mark damage honestly, you don't even have to be at the table when it's your opponent's turn. I hate that. Even the horribly unbalanced and overpriced Warhammer 40k gives you things to do while it's your opponent's turn...

Still bummed that they are giving he middle finger to legacy armies, especially Hordes. I will wait to judge the new rules once they've release more information, but right now, it's not looking good. They need to sell us on this new edition, and the way it was released makes me feel like they don't actually believe in their own game. It's a very sad state for the game.

Look I wish the best for PP and the game itself, I played the game for almost 10 years. I will not be returning because of the community, at least in my area. If toxic needed a definition it would be the Warmachine community in my area. You cannot just go to a hobby store and forget life and play a game with little plastic models. You better be of the same mindset of the majority of the community or you will be harassed or isolated. The community refuses to see this and well, it's just easier to play at my local GW store and not EVER have to deal with people that just cannot shut up.

I love your channel and all the hard work you do. I came to AoS because of your channel so thank you for helping me stay in the tabletop hobby.

honestly it reminds me of when I was playing with a new player at my LGS. we were not playing steam roller and had players interrupt us since "we played to many turns", or "why are you not playing steam roller". let's just say that player quit and went to play warhammer. and honestly community is PP's fault for the most part do to fostering a toxic tournament only play. and refused to support narrative games until it was to late.

The other beta rules are trickling out, so won't take long to see all the other stuff they got in the pipeline. I am nervous about those extra spells. A lot of t he time that turns into a none choice.
@flameknightdragon2 жыл бұрын
so the reason they they menoth, and cryx do not have the customizations is do to the fact they are legacy armies aka dead factions. Which are not getting any of the extra rules added in MK4, and will not get any extra balance passes. Since in the oblivion event aka Warmachine's end times event they nuked many of the factions out of the lore. menoth was one of them, and in lore cryx made it but have done nothing but try to steal from a single grave and failed.

Ever since I left Warmachine after the release of MKIII, I have not been able to find something that really scratches that ouch like WM did. This announcement actually has me excited to play again. As such, I would enjoy seeing WM and Iron Kingdoms on your channel.
@mikey_vengenz2 жыл бұрын
I might have been inclined to give it another shot. However, when I read the announcement article and FAQ it's apparent to me that this will all just be more of the same crap. The reference to blowing up the old world wasn't the only dig on GW. It's clear that part of their identity is still being the "anti-GW" wargame. I already witnessed part of that toxicity in the community when I played warmachine. It's fine to not like a company or game, but be about your own thing. Every other non GW game I play does it's own thing and never, at least openly, says things like, "well we're not a huge company! We're just the small guys! We don't do things like some 'other' companies do." Wink wink. Screw them.
@braedzero81272 жыл бұрын
Especially because the way they are handling bringing old Warmachine factions into the new edition is basically the same way that armies were brought into AoS, just marketed as definitely not being an End Times equivalent.
@Robert-ms2xs2 жыл бұрын
Eh never bothered me. They wanted the market that was upset with the way GW handled its rules/playerbase. Privateer press certainly lost its way at some point but it isn't like GW doesnt do that on a semi-annual basis. 40k has been repeatedly kept a float through marketing and good hype through its poorer decisions. They were always the little guy in the room with worse models. I do think warmachine was a much better for competitive play than 40k. Where as 40k has always imo been better for casual play. They are also different style games. I am not going to be upset about any jabs at a GW. GW is a fairly not consumer friendly company on the reg. Nor am I gonna fan boy over PP. Just would be nice to have another game supported to keep GW honest. I doubt it'll reach MK2 lvls of play but it'd be good if it did for all of us.

I liked the Animus system in Hordes. Basically each beast gave your Warlock an additional spell, and your beasts could cast them too. I can see the confusing part is your warlock had to spend fury to cast and the beast generated fury by casting them. I played trollkin, so I often doubled up on much needed animus like the ones Dire-trolls and Axers had.
