I was in the crowd at Elliots last show at the U of U. He was so scattered and couldn't remember the lyrics to Long, Long, Long by The Beatles. Its an obscure Beatles song and my favorite. I started shouting the lyrics so he could hear. He thanked me after that song and it was special. So crushed a couple weeks later when he died.

Such a great show. Two totally different personalities but with shared musical talent. I can't stop thinking that Jon Brion is the ying to Elliott's yang. One an extrovert and part of "showbiz!" and the other a mysterious introvert. Both talented instrumentalists and performers, but just so different. The dynamic just reminds me of McCartney/Harrison (or, in fiction Ray Stantz and Egon Spengler!)

Too many people have shaped an image of Elliott in their head based off his music. His music isn’t a direct copy of his personality. It’s a small part of a human being that was so much more. We have to stop thinking of him as an extension of his music rather than the his music being am extension of him. You can see him joking in just about every show and interview. People who knew him knew a gentle funny guy who was fun to be around. He didn’t kill himself. I wish the fan base would wake up and see that. The investigation is still open pending evidence that’s never coming. What’s sad is his family will never get justice for what happened to home

Every time I learn an Elliott Smith song, I find a new way to look at composition. I don't know if he thought about music differently or just had an understanding of theory that I can't even imagine, but even when his songs are stripped down the the basic components the progressions are so powerful.

I think "everything means nothing to me" is one of the most beautiful compositions of all time. I agree with the other commenter that this is my favorite performance of it, if not one of my favorite live elliott songs of all time. To me this song sounds half modern, half classical. Like if a classical composer traveled to the future and saw that people were now writing 4 minute compositions that you sing over.

Every person who dies young .... their narrative gets twisted to make it out that the person was a Troubled Artist Always Fated to Careen Toward Death---it's a safe and lazy narrative. Plenty of people were far more troubled than, say, Elliott Smith at different parts of their lives and live to be quite old----among other benefits of doing so is escaping the stupid Tragic Artist trope. Elliott Smith had his troubles and struggles but he was also hilarious, mirthful, whimsical, curious, smart, philosophical, and a lot more than addiction, depression, dysfunctional relationship with girlfriend who stabbed him to death with a steak knife.

To me he appeared to be having a great time. It seems like these two guys know each other to some degree, and keeping in mind Elliott is really really dry with his humor, which is lost on some, but the host played right up to it, allowing for these periods of quiet, or leaving Elliott's one word answers at that, encouraging further sarcastic hijinks... Elliott is softly spoken, but I dunno about on another plane, brother...if anything, he looks incredibly healthy and put together here. His skin looks great, though it could be tv makeup. His voice is strong and clear. And besides his natural not so outgoing nature, he is really present and engaged throughout this show. Anyway, I love him too. ✌🏻

Whenever I usually introduce new people to Elliotts beautiful melodic heart and soul touching music, they say it sounds depressing which now I have the answer to it straight out of Elliotts mouth! It's " Quiet Strong Beauty" in this Loud Weak Ugly world! So I was feeling pretty down this morning and stumbled upon this ABSOLUTELY AMAZING INSPIRATIONALLY AWAKENING performance! Eternal Sunshine (which is my favorite love movie) soundtrack then Jon Brion search brought me here. This was in my honest opinion the best duo session ever! Jon Brion tried to show his respect/ love/ compassion and admiration to another true ARTIST! The way he encourages and picks Elliotts spirit up when he makes the smallest infraction on his genius artistry and becomes depressed is FUCKING BLINDING!!! I will have this on repeat and share this video with as many people who truly FEEL music that I can in honoring Elliott Smith and what PASSION can create!!! Elliott has inspired me to be a more open/ loving/ caring/ passionate person, which I think is the TRUE goal of life :)

I'd just listen to the full albums. If you like rawer, indie singer-songwriter stuff then start with Either/Or and move onto his self-titled, New Moon, and finally Roman Candle. If you're more into poppy, polished, Beatle-esque stuff then start with XO, move onto From a Basement on the Hill, then Figure 8. Or just listen to all the albums in chronological order because it's all great. Figure 8 is his weakest album in my opinion, and it still has plenty of brilliant moments. I wish I was just discovering Elliott. Just don't listen to it too often if you're prone to depression. It can rub off on you and keep you stuck in depressive mode. It's a comforting sadness, but his lyrics are so relentlessly pessimistic.

I'll run out of superlatives soon so I just want to say Thank You Elliott for saving me time and time again, from the moment I first discovered your songs and continually so. I've yet to come across a songwriter with more fearlessness when it comes to baring your emotions in your songs, and in doing so allowing many of us to find some weird kind of solace in your pain. I hope you have finally found peace. R.I.P. Thanks for sharing this video.

An emotional rollercoaster of sadness and happiness overwhelms my soul every time I view! The truly beautiful, kind and loving soul, that is Elliott Smith 😍 Or better yet, a "Quiet, Strong Beauty" quoted by Elliott at 31:54 commenting on a songs feel to himself 👌 He continuously beats himself up mentally, throughout the interview 🥺 It's awesome to see Jon, who is obviously an admirer, steering him towards happiness in his empathy 🥰 Most of us that love and follow Elliott Smith can relate, with consistently downgrading every action we do 😏 So keep being a loving, caring and passionate human being, because once we're gone, who knows how in depth our strength empowers someone else in need 🥰😍👌
